I can see and even appreciate what they were trying to do with that game, but I feel like they failed at a fundamental level to make the controls feel good and the checkpointing, or lack thereof, is actively contemptful of the player.
Frankly those were two of the things that made Odyssey work--the controls were tight and the checkpointing was very generous.
those are fair criticisms
it's one of the few 3d platformers I like because the hover function on the waterpack is basically a do-over resource

It definitely provides a degree of course-correction that I find valuable, but the base movement it's built on top of is still bad for me. Remake Sunshine in the engine they made Odyssey on and I'd definitely give it a look.

I've been resisting Odyssey but if people who aren't generally into 3d platformers say it's fun, I'll probably give it a shot
A nice thing about Odyssey is that there's a LOT of content and very little of it is explicitly-required, so if a certain segment is frustrating, you can just go do something else instead and still progress.

oh that's not how I'd play it
when a game pisses me off I either keep doing the thing until I win or just quit entirely
I really have to love the fast-forward feature in 999. It's not as nice as just being able to skip to moments I haven't explored, but it's nice to at least be able to get past the majority of the text quickly.
Plus being able to skip through puzzles I've done before makes me feel like a super-genius!

I like every 3d Mario except sunshine honestly. About the only thing I like about that game is Mario's shirt and the tropical theme. Fludd sucks, the UI is abominable, and it just doesn't feel good.
Alright, well now that I have one of the endings for 999, I'm going to go back to Phoenix Wright for a little while. I think this case is pretty short, anyway.

The Cap throw lets you do this somewhat, if your reactions are fast enough. You can use it to change direction mid-air.
The movement in odyssey is so good I don't know if I can even go back and play mario 64. How do mario with no hat?!
With the possible exception of any rolling on narrow ledges. But I didn't like monkeyball or marble madness either, so it's just solidly "Not for me"tm.

On the final boss of XC2, I feel like I need to yell into a pillow to get over the bullshit OHKO it serves up. I really despise that mechanic.
Build up a big chain attack to just kill him through it when phase 2 starts
If done correctly he should just go from 40-50% to just dead and he never gets to do it. I actually didn't even know he had that mechanic until after the fact and I read about it
A chain with like 5 orbs should be enough to win from there

Yeah, I ended up finishing it not long after. I'm pretty sure I could have won the first time as I had enough orbs and wasn't far off starting up a chain attack, but the OHKO took me by surprise.
I will say that I think the combat is the best of all the Xenoblade games, even if the inability to revisit tutorials/the informant system is bad design.

i think the one weird part is stuff that they explain pretty early is completely impractical until late in the game
like I think it explains full bursts right off the bat but you can't realistically pull it off till the final few chapters
but yeah idk there was only one thing I had to look up due to misreading so I didnt find it a big issue

Something to look forward to then, VLR has an incredible system for skipping back to a choice you wanted to redo differently.
Yeah, that’s one thing I’m apparently missing in the PS4/PC ports of the original game - they added that feature, which is a very nice time saving thing.

I only got a 2DS mid last year, my first handheld since the original Game Boy. Since then I've played through all of the Ace Attorney games twice and it's come from nowhere to become my favourite game franchise of all time

My major hope for the next mainline Ace Attorney (Spirit of Justice spoilers)
is that Athena is better integrated into the story instead of being shoved off to the side. Like, I get it, Dual Destinies had the focus on her and SoJ does real good things for Apollo's character development, but her lack of agency in case 4/5, Maya returning and the DLC case have me concerned that Athena is being phased out of focus.
We don't know anything about Athena's dad, right? I remember hearing that one of the concepts for AA6 was going to be a literal criminal court, him being an opponent prosecutor could be interesting.

Oh, in that case Odyssey sucks as much as all the other 3D Mario games. It just gave me plenty to do while skipping the crappy platforming challenges.

But also Sunshine is still best
it must be really hard to make a good 3D platformer.
there are only a handful of great ones
meanwhile, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of great 2D platformers

hey that's me. pointless and difficult sidequests are my vice.
dodging lightning bolts in FFX was terrible and yet i did it.

My list is like, Jak and Daxter and Mario Galaxy
Sly Cooper is pretty good from what I played, which was like an hour or two of the first game
edit: Oh and I guess Psychonauts counts. LOVE Psychonauts.

i had fun with it, but it felt like a huuuuuge step down from the galaxies and 3D world in everything other than visuals and music

Somebody took all of your colored chalk huh speed?
That said Galaxy 1 is the most fun game ever made
2 wasn't fun and I blame Yoshi
the only 3d platformers I like are Super Mario Sunshine and Banjo Kazooie
and I doubt I would actually be able to enjoy the latter of those if I sat down and played it today

it's weird, I don't know what else I would call the modern PoP games, but "3d platformer" definitely isn't it
anyway that one was awesome and I'm still sad that Ubi seems to have given up on the series
It’s received a lot of valid criticism from upset fans but I did love the twists and turns of the last case!
Apollo was pretty awesome in this game and the game’s whole premise turned out to be less hokey than I was fearing.

1 was better by virtue of having a more fun hub to dick around in.
