For some people such as myself it's easier to spend $10 a month than spend $50+ at once on a game I know is otherwise free to play.
Somewhere an accountant is screeching in torment.
I get the sentiment, but sometimes people can't afford to drop $50-90 at once. Having a limited budget is expensive.
I mean, if you're putting away $10 a month on this anyway, you could go without a stimpack for a few months and ferret that money in a sock under your bed each month. Then spend the rest of the year having a free stimpack! This is doable because stimpack are far from required.
It's not really a matter of financial ability, but a psychological issue. Not a bad thing! It just feels icky for a lot of people, myself included, to spend $50 at once on a "free" game.

It's that kind of impulsive short term spending outlook that puts people in a bind in the first place. For simply doing without the stimpack for 5 months and saving that money for the known stimpack sale, you in turn get a full year of stims and save effectively $70 over the course of the year.
I think it's kind of hilarious that a lot of you pretend things like HotS and Hearthstone are "free games". They're not free. They're not designed to be free.
They're designed to have a marketing gimmick that let's them be advertised as "free".
Figure out your budget for them and then stick to it. Anything else is a mug's game that hides the true amount you're spending under a bunch of small "just this one time" fees and purchases.

to be fair they can both be free if you're a college student with infinite time to grind them

I mean, I haven't spent any money on heroes in many months, and have no need, or inclination to spend any money on the game.
I have over 70K gold... and if I keep up with dailies, I never have to spend money on hero bundles.
Hearthstone is completely different because it definitely is pay to win compared to Heroes.

Yeah, HotS is actually really reasonable to play for free.

Hots IMO is designed well in that money is used for cosmetic silliness. Unless you absolutely need mecha Tyrael right this second, you can obtain it later through a lucky drop or through crafting
I'm certainly adversely affected by lootboxes. I hate them, but am addicted to them. I'm lucky that I can restrain myself from spending too much, and have the means to spend what I do, but that certainly isn't true for many people.
edit: this quote is also pretty on point
The ‘buzz’ of opening loot boxes and winning rare items inevitably was met by regret and shame afterwards. The anonymous Overwatch player told me they eventually felt “physically sick” when they logged in. “I woke up,” explained another, “realized what I had done, checked my bank account and wanted to throw up.”
Have you ever used tiny white lies to be a monster? Well I have....

I kind of miss the old system where there was just a simple dollar value on a skin, and skins went on sale. No 3 different currencies that all buy different things.
I mean, it's cool that you can just get stuff when you level. But damn. I just want this simple skin / recolor and none for characters I don't own or care about.
Previously to 2.0 I did spend money in HotS
Other than the 360 stimpack I bought during the sale I have not bought anything because I don't like buying in game currency to buy things

I miss the old system in that it had a real cash shop.
I like the new progression system and the lootboxes it drops you just for playing. I think the fact that now essentially the only thin you can buy on a regular basis is those lootboxes is scummy bullshit.

Yeah, I used to spend a couple of bucks here and there when skins went on sale.
As a cheap-ass who has spent exactly $0 on HotS, I really appreciate all the random cool skins, mounts, and occasional stimpacks I've gotten since the 2.0 system kicked in. I even own every hero (except Blaze, haven't bought him yet). Granted I have played the game a lot in about 3 years (account level will be 1,000 soon), and I am pretty diligent about doing daily quests, but HotS is super F2P friendly. If you play long enough, you will have access to an incredibly deep roster. Compare that to Hearthstone, where completing dailies for years won't give you anything remotely approaching an extensive collection capable of playing all manner of strong, crazy, fun, or meme-y decks.
I wonder how well HotS is doing financially, though, because anecdotally it seems like people are spending significantly less on the game now.
I've bought the following since the economy rework
*token sums of gems to get the mounts that are full of stars (imo, far and away the best value)
*gems to buy the occasional new hero that I wanted to play
*the year stimpack
*the Mecha storm bundle because I already had the characters and I wanted all three of the mech skins.

I think they must be floundering a bit, else why would they pull the 'gem-only skins' stunt?

Dual currency economies are just currently in vogue for F2P games, a similar system also having worked for OW.

Sure, but that was Heroes 2.0. They altered the business model again a few months later.
I remember praising HotS 1.0 for having such a simple no-nonsense shop with no metagame bullshit. That kind of system has so much more integrity than loot boxes - sadly, it has been definitively proven that it doesn't make as much money.

It's important to note that "We have a successful business model" and "We could have a more successful business model" can be simultaneously true
The last time I think I spent money in HoTS was for the War World skin for Hammer (I think), definitely for Mecha-Tassadar. Haven’t spent any cash in Heroes 2.0 (really tempted on the mecha bundle for the last event though)

I really think they were just trying to mirror LoL at first. Cause LoL's economy worked to great success for years.
They simply changed it to something they thought would be better for them.
Dude, you're on pack quest duty here. Quit screwing up. You totally should have frozen that rogue's board last turn. Come ON man!!! Also, why are you playing that deck without the quest. It's almost impossible to safely set up the combo in one turn without it.
EDIT: damn tabs. this should have gone under the hearthstone thread. Whatever. Get it together Dover! And stop picking potion of polymorph off of the glyph! That's not a good card! It just gives high variance "wins" to make you think it is!
