I mean, ultimately a lawyer has to work within the wishes of their client, so while they could be criticized for choosing to represent him as a client, the argument itself could have been put forth by the one paying the bills and they were forced to run with it.

And the actual core content of the magazine is a self-promotion piece? Ordered by said self-promoter to replace the original? Good lord.

(Wonder what'd happen if people got the planned edition released somehow.)

Also, wow, Judge Garcia was in fact not having any of Nassar's bullshit at all:
Defendant apparently wishes to be resentenced before a judge who is ambivalent about the suffering of his victims. This standard would disqualify any judge with a pulse.

The more I read about this case, the more physically ill it makes me.

So this basically means every high profile female gymnast in the past, what...20 years might have been abused by this asshole?

Closer to 30 - he was a trainer on the national teams in the late 80s.

Again, all of the 2012 "Fierce Five" gymnasts have come out as his victims. The scope of his abuse is greater than that of Penn State and Baylor - combined.

I don't think Kyla Ross has come out as a survivor. The other four (Maroney, Douglas, Raisman, Wieber) have. Simone Biles, the 2016 individual gold medalist who was too young for 2012 has also said she was abused by Nassar, which might be why you're thinking five have.

Kyla Ross was on CBS This Morning to say she is a survivor. As was Madison Kocian, from the 2016 Olympic team. I think Laurie Hernandez is the only member of the last two Olympic teams to not publicly identify as a survivor at this point.

The taekwondo coach who was suspsended for sexual misconduct has been reinstated by SafeSport because the appeals process requires that the victims personally testify (they are not required to personally testify at any other point in the process) to the committee hearing. For reasons unknown, but likely reasonable, they did not.

So another abuser back in a position of authority

Just when you think Baylor can't go any lower.

    They do this.

    I don't have the words.
When these groups organized on campus to comfort each other and demand action from former chancellor Kenneth Starr, “[Burchett] would coordinate with them, befriend them, and pretend he was helping them organize vigils and demonstrations [about] sexual assault,” the source added.

Burchett would pass on what he learned to school officials, the communications department, and Ketchum, the source added. In an email described to PRWeek, Kevin Jackson, VP of student life and Burchett’s supervisor, said the director of student activities was “adept at this kind of thing.”

No, it was because a) they didn't want another SMU, especially with one of their top programs in the country, and b) Emmert didn't have the spine to deal with the various lawsuits flung at the NCAA by PSU supporters. I honestly believe that had Emmert had the spine that PSU's insurer showed, Penn State's reputation would be even more in tatters now.

Denhollander took her three year old to a meetup of survivors. Sometimes a child's perspective asks obvious questions in a simple way:
I had the privilege of attending an event with many of my Sister Survivors today, with Elora and our three-year old, Ellianna, in tow. As she watched us all line up for a photo, I wished MSU and USAG officials were there, to hear the questions my baby girl asked.

Laying her head on my shoulder, pigtails waving in the air, dimpled hands gesturing, she asked in her baby voice:

    “Who are they mommy?”

“They are mommy’s friends sweetheart, the ones who put a bad man in jail. Now we’re helping change things so that it isn’t so easy for bad men to do bad things again.”

“All of them? But mommy. . .mommy. . .there are kids in there.”

“Yes baby girl. There are kids in there. That girl’s name is Mimi, and she’s 11 years old. But she’s helping stop bad men too.”

“But Mommy, why are there kids in there?”

“Because even kids can be courageous, and tell the truth, and stand up for what is right. That’s why she’s there too.”

(MSU, USAG, why are there kids in there? Why are there little girl survivors, barely 11, standing next to survivors in their 40’s? MSU, USAG, why are there kids in there?)

“Mommy, who is the little girl in the picture? Why is she just in the picture?”

“Her name is Chelsea sweetheart, and she couldn’t be here today, so her mommy is here for her. She is helping stop bad men too.”

Someday my daughters will know the story of Chelsea Markham, who lost her life to suicide after the depression and anguish set in when Nassar assaulted her, just a little girl, but years after MSU first had warnings. Someday they will know of her, but today, all she needs to know is that her mommy is playing a vital part in this fight, and she and Chelsea are a part of us. We remember Chelsea.

“But mommy why. . .why are there so many?”

And I hold her tight, and I can’t answer, because I won’t be able to hold back the tears anymore if I try. Why? Why are there so many?

There are so many, sweet girl, because no one did the job these women and courageous children are now doing. There are so many, because no one listened. No one stood up for the truth. No one wanted to know the truth. There are so many, because no one did the right thing.

That’s why there are children in there. That’s why Chelsea is in the picture and our hearts, but not here with us. That’s why there are so many.
Never again. May my daughters never, ever have to hold their own babies, and look out across a sea of women and children who have come through hell and persisted, and ask “mommy. . .but why? Why the children? Why isn’t the little girl in the picture here? Mommy, why are there so many?”

“All of you are doing it together?”

“Yes sweetheart. We’re doing it together. Like a big team, we’re doing it together”.

There is always a chance to stand up and speak. Always. Look for it. Because we’re doing it together, but we can’t do it alone.

The only thing that gives me pause is that something like 200 survivors have spoken publicly and none of them have accused Nassar of anything beyond digital penetration that I can recall. It seems odd that he would have escalated in '92 and never again? I guess because she reported it to the AD it might have scared him?

But one of the hanging details from the federal trial was that some of his child pornography was self-produced so that part tracks.
