I'm not sure what to do with the aerial attack starter. Though I've never been good with aerial combos in fighting games to begin with.
You can usually get a few light/medium attacks in, then a special move, or possibly a super if the character your using has aerial versions of those
I definitely like how sparse the move list is, though. Memorizing all kinds of special moves with complicated button inputs was never very much fun.
Yeah, casually it comes down to aesthetic flavor. Which is fine by me because fuck yeah Yamcha. There's some moves here and there that can be extended by further button inputs, like Krillin can throw one or MANY destructo discs.

Also shoutout to Vegeta and his temper-tantrum energy blast being a move. The one where he rapidly fires a lot of blasts.
I’m just glad Arcsys were able to restrain themselves from making every character a complicated multi-system puzzle game. The experts will wean out their own ridiculous complexity while I hang out with the noobs mashing square and spamming Goku balls.
I’m really enjoying this game, there are some issues, like the lobby system (and the fact it only exists to sell loot boxes) but overall it’s pretty great.
Now I’m probably your average buyer of a fighting game. I buy the game, play the story/arcade, unlock the fighters, play some offline matches with friends and dabble with the online and do ok-ish, but that’s really it. I don’t know the terminology, no idea on the nitty gritty of frames and don’t follow any kind of pro events or tournaments. So I really appreciate the simplicity of the move inputs and the fact that it’s show flashy you just feel like some pro player just doing auto combos.
There’s also the fact that as a pretty big dragonball fan I was pretty eager for this game and the various vids and stuff online have lead to me learning more about fighting games from them, and the looking into more and now I’m actually pretty interested in the pro scence and learning about frames and mix ups and what not. It’s turned out to be a pretty great gateway for me.
It's pretty staggering how bad the story mode is at preparing new players to the fighting game scene for any matches with other humans.
The CPU plays 0 defense.
It picks up very suddenly in the second campaign
It goes from very few blocks and teleports and no supers to actively blocking and pushing and chaining supers with zero ramp up
If you wish for a vision of hell, go into training mode against Teen Gohan, Gotenks, and Cell, set the mode from Training Dummy to CPU with 50% difficulty, but leave the Ki meter at always 7 like I did on accident.
Motionless Kamehamehas and Galactic Donuts everywhere. That freeze frame and pose haunt my dreams.
We had a good round of ring matches earlier, you gotta organize where you're going to have it instead of being able to invite people to it which should hopefully be patched in.

When people saying there's problems with the lobby system, do you mean how there's only so many and they're capped at 64 players each and when you're done playing a match someone may have joined the lobby you were in so the game keeps checking and checking and checking?
Oh, there are a lot of problems. In the main fighting game thread there is now several posts of two forumers trying their hardest to figure out how to fight each other and failing.
That was me and blackbeard yeah. But I recall us having trouble connecting in other fighting games. Me and two other forumers had a good hour or so of games.
They have officially said ring matches are not working correctly though.

What exactly is a ring match? Like as in there's a ring-out?

No, it's their current stand in for private lobbies. You create a match and then anyone in your lobby can walk up to you andjoin it. Supposedly passwordable but that makes them unjoinable it seems like at the moment.
You can have one or two fights going on and everyone else spectates and spams emotes.
This is one of the few fighting games for which I actually prefer using a controller. The movements are simple enough to get away with using a gateless analog stick, and the button arrangement makes sense (almost like it was designed for controllers, natch).
I got in as many matches as I could this weekend just in case the game goes through a Guilty Gear-style drop-off in player base before I come back next weekend. Hit is such a scrubcrusher it's not funny. People don't know how to deal with his teleporting cross-ups yet and I'm getting away with murder most of the time.

The lobby system is completely pointless, it could be a menu
But not only that, because of the lobby, the only way to fight other people is to physically find their avatar and join their ring game
There is no way to simply invite a friend to a match
If it continues to be impossible to find a stable lobby and have more matches than disconnects, I may just return this game.
And that's assuming it doesn't become nothing but stress. I'm beginning to fear that I'm going to fall into the old trap of feeling unworthy of playing.

I kept going with Abridged based on y'all's strong recommendation and while it still has its occasional flashes of "yikes this sure was 2009 On The Internet," there are some extremely well-constructed jokes and the pacing is honestly significantly better than the actual show
It's nice to be reminded of a lot of the small details this game brings in, too
I thought I saw a popup at the lobby that said you could get them also by reaching in game currency totals but it was unclear if that was cumulative over the course of your entire game or at once to then spend
but it didnt matter because I consider my time and a good nights sleep worth more than 3$

FML I just tried some matches online. Either I'm really bad or people online are crazy good.

No, you go into the lobby and your avatar creates a ring that allows other people to join and fight.
I have not been able to successfully do it, but that's the system they want you to use for friendly Peer to Peer fights.

im guessing there's no way to swap her back back to her lab outfit?

nope
Also, how do you use the sparking attack? I can't figure it out and the button menu has nothing set up by default
And that's assuming it doesn't become nothing but stress. I'm beginning to fear that I'm going to fall into the old trap of feeling unworthy of playing.
You press all four attack buttons a the same time.

locking characters in a fighting game behind something that requires effort in 2018 is such fucking GARBAGE
But locking characters behind really hard challenges that casual players have no chance with is really shitty.

My favorite part is when Yamcha joins.
"Guys, you know I gave up fighting."
"We could use your help. Besides, you are wearing your gi."
What a coincidence. He was wearing that at the moment the clones showed up. :P

You also unlock them automatically when you get to 300,000 and 500,000 zeni. First Vegeta then Goku.
