Sound not working on my computer.

So, after months of bugging my mother, she finally upgraded the family computer to XP. Well, rather, it was the hard drive crash that convinced her.

BUT

She was an idiot and stuck her Microsoft Office CDs somewhere years ago, so there's no Microsoft Word or anything on it right now. So she forces me to hook up my computer upstairs for a couple weeks so my sister can work on papers and shit for finals.

"No problem," I think.

Well, it's like a week week later, and now my sound is acting up. It started a couple days ago. I would have the speakers turned on, and I would turn them off and plug my headphones into the jack on my computer, and there wouldn't be any sound. Restarting the computer fixed that.

But now I'm not getting any sound at all. Not from headphones, not from speakers. I've restarted several times to no avail. I can 'adjust' the basic master system volume, but double-clicking on it for any advanced stuff brings up a "Do You Wish To Report An Error" thingy from Microsoft. I am just mystified as to what the fuck has happened.

Um, can u access the controls on your sound card. If you can is there any option to change what it uses the audio jacks for? Mine allows them to be changed to all input or output etc. If you cant get to it at all then maybe ur sound cards busted.

I took a look at the sound card and it doesn't look like it's burnt out or anything.

I've checked all the input/output setting and they are as they should be.

Well, I know it's a Soundblaster Audigy, but I can't figure out the exact card make, because all the info I look at for the hardward just lists it as "CCC0".

Hmm did a CD with it come with ur computer? If u cant find anything that came with it then maybe running a scan with PC Wizard (freeware) will show u the exact make and u can find it online.

I downloaded PC Wizard, but it lists an audio device that isn't on Dell's website.

An easy way to check if it is a hardware or software issue would be to download a linux live-cd of some kind and see if that gives you sound. Ubuntu has nice support for lots of hardware with built in drivers.

Oh, and to prevent further problems with your computer, why not download Open Office for your mother? Should be a good substitute for Microsoft office:

If it's a Soundblaster, just launch IE, go to Creative Support and click on "Software AutoUpdate". This will take you to an ActiveX download which will work similarly to Windows Update. That should help you get the proper driver. It's what I've used in the past, quite effectively. Also, the driver might be listed as "Recommended" instead of "Critical", so make sure to check to see what it gives you besides the critical updates.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

    XPS Gen 3.

embrik: As you can see from the PC Wizard screenshot, it doesn't tell me precisely WHICH SB Audigy card it is...

Looks like it's an Audigy 2 ZS. You can download the Dell driver HERE
