My wife finally decided to grab DOOM today, got that all patched and she fired it up and....couldn't play the campaign? She didn't have a Nintendo account and so the only option showing up was arcade mode.

It's not hard to set her up an account, and I can understand not being able to access online stuff without one, but why block off the campaign??

I've played about an hour of Mercenaries Saga, and so far that game is rough. Maybe it's just because I've played some Disgaea 5 recently and my expectations were affected, but that game definitely feels like a mobile phone game that was ported to Switch without a lot of time spent on polish. Item descriptions are wrong and/or switched with adjacent items in the store, the colors denoting stat increases and decreases are flipped, typos and grammar errors are all over the place in the dialog, etc. And the gameplay is even more basic than a lot of reviews let on, like something that would have come out on the SNES prior to Tactics Ogre. If you were thinking about purchasing it maybe hold off for a patch or a significant sale.

Unfortunately those kinds of problems are par for the course for anything published by Circle Ent.; and I don't recall any of their haphazardly localized games ever receiving fixes.

Aegis Defenders has quickly become my favourite indie game on the Switch, by a long shot. I'm a big fan of tower defense, but I don't think you need to be to get into this, because placing the towers just feels like another ability your characters have.

So picked up a pro controller, and haven't tried it out yet, but the play on that dpad (between directions) is pretty damn short.

Not entirely sure this will help my Celeste game, but at least the wife and I can play MK8 without joycon induced cramping.

Is it? I dunno, every time I pop in to buy something I see like 5 other games I kinda want. I feel like it's doing its job.

I got on to buy Mercenary Kings and learned about The Darkside Detective which looks awesome:

The third chapter is much much harder than the first two. Keep going! I had over 400 deaths on my first B-side. I had something like 600-700 deaths on chapter 7

Dandara just oozes cool, but it’s hard as balls and while the wall-to-Wall movement is cool I definitely blamed the movement more than myself at least a couple of times when I died.

I think this is the one I got and it's good.

Look at the other versions of that card below. Notice the price doubles as the size doubles, with the 200 gig one kind of in line with that pricing too, but 256 gig is more "bleeding edge" so it's way overpriced. More than double the cost for only 25% more space.

I'm going to sell my 3DS. I'm trying to figure out if the Nintendo ID on it is the same thing that's on my Switch or not. If it's not, I'd like to remove the personal details and sell it with the account still on, since I can then sell it with the downloaded software included. I can't figure out whether it's the same thing though, anyone understand how to figure it out?

What is this I don't even.

So, after installing the screen protector I ended up with a small but noticeable bubble right in the middle. Do I just keep massaging it until it goes away?

Yes. It can take a while but just keep nudging it towards an edge and it will eventually disappear. Absolutely do not lift the screen protector at this point because it's just going to make things worse.

I'm interstate at the moment and playing Celeste in handheld mode. I would say that at least 50% of my deaths have been because of the Joycon stick. It should help a lot.

I'm around 3 or 4 hours in? I've played I think 4 or 5 story missions, and grinded some of the free missions.

It's a bit higher in my esteem than yours. Then again, I thought it was obviously an extremely budget take on Tactical RPGs. I mean it's three games in one for $15. But you know, it's been a long time since we got a Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy Tactics, motif in tact. Or I'm just not very in the loop. I have zero doubt Disgaea is a more immaculately produced game, but it's motif is way too different from what I want.

Bottom line, despite it's rough edges, for now, I'm finding that the gameplay holds up. And while it was off to an agonizingly slow start, it is beginning to pick up. Curious where a few more story missions take me.

Wizardry clones mostly died off in the US after the 90s, but became wildly popular in Japan and still are to this day.

I’m only about an hour in, but my impression is that the Metrioid comparisons aren’t unfounded. I’ve found a few semi-different routes between areas, found some currently impassable walls, and crossed past a few weird things I have no idea how to access/what to do with. Game’s atmosphere (or atmospheres, I’ve seen a couple) is/are really catching, which perks up the Super Metroid-lover in me.

The movement mechanics are weird and a little more finicky than I’d hope; there’s generous auto-aim for bouncing from platform to platform, but sometimes it defaults to a kind of weird place. Mostly beneficial, but results in some looseness (so far). On the other hand, the sheer speed of possible movement suggests a lot of potential. I already can’t wait to see the speedruns that are undoubtedly coming.

It’s all very intriguing. Way too early to get overly effusive, but I think this thing might be a little gem.

I like the game, it’s cool as hell, and hard in some fun ways, but one of the things that good Metroid-style games do is inspire you to rethink previous areas. You get the ice beam and think of all the flying enemies that are platforms now, you get the x-ray scope and go back and look at a dozen different walls that might’ve been hiding something.

The upgrades I’ve gotten so far in Dandara are all more of the “turned on all the red switches” and “turned on all the blue elevators”. They feel more like keys that have very specific uses than upgrades that inspire you to revisit the map.

This may change, I’ve only cleared the first boss, and it doesn’t undercut how awesome the game looks, feels, or sounds.

That’s a good point, and my discoveries so far have been mostly similar. I’m speculating based on a couple of weird little objects (that weren’t just behind a platform or rotatable wall) that things will get more open later, but I could very well be wrong.

It's amazing how far the series has fallen in gaming's collective memory. It used to be a really big deal along with Might & Magic and Ultima, being one of the defining series of Western RPGs at the time but they didn't have a good time after the mid 90s. It would like if Final Fantasy had become a fairly unknown, niche series after the SNES era.

The branching off of the Japanese games happened well before the best games in the main line series too so the gridders they inspired all have felt a bit simple mechanically.

I found that tilting it doesn't work very well, and once I started jerking it, I got much better results.

Due to GOG in the past couple years I put a ton of time into most of the M&M games, particularly the Xeen ones, and Wizardry 6. Also M&MX that came out a couple years ago, and that Grimoire game made by a crazy person that really failed to live up to his decades of development. And of course all the Etrians on DS/3DS (and The Dark Spire!).

I really prefer that style of game to the Grimlock one that's been popularized recently. Not that I hate Grimlock but that's just a totally different genre to me. It's an action game, with a lot more focus on timing and physical/spacial puzzles than having a story and character development.

I'm actually kind of working on a classic style dungeon crawler right now on the platform Celeste started on, Pico-8. Who knows if I'll finish it or not but it's fun to try.

The Etrian games and The Dark Spire did a great job on combat mechanics and skills, and also in terms of role-playing opportunities on map events ("do you drink from the pool?").
