It's 2018 and the [State of the Union] is...

So It GoesSo It Goes We keep moving...Registered User regular
[insert word here]

Tonight will be our 45th President's State of the Union address starting at 9 PM Eastern. The background: a week of what seems like non stop news about the Russia investigation, the Trump admin refusing to enforce sanctions, a Russian spymaster meeting with our CIA director, the Nunes memo and corresponding Democrat memo, McCabe being forced out of the FBI, and a huge, big, ongoing theme of Trump seeking to obstruct, smear, and discredit anyone who is investigating him or not 100% a Trump fan. We have specific threads discussing these news stories, please don't bleed that over into this thread, which is about the speech tonight.

What will he talk about? The Wall? Russia? The DACA? Himself? Tune in to find out. If you want spoilers some excerpts were released and are in this NYT article: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/30/us/politics/trump-state-of-the-union.html The article also contains excerpts from the Democratic response speech which will be given by Joe Kennedy III.

Dreamers will be in attendance. Some racist in Congress is maybe trying to get them arrested:
In latest House GOP asshole news:
Rep. Paul Gosar has asked the Capitol Police and the Department of Justice to “consider checking identification” of everyone attending President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address and “arresting any illegal aliens in attendance,” the Arizona Republican announced Tuesday on Twitter.

The move is presumably aimed at so-called Dreamers who will be in attendance.

At least 27 lawmakers have invited young immigrants protected by the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program that ends March 5.

...

The Capitol Police has not indicated whether it will follow through on Gosar’s request.

Capitol Police officers are “under no order” to verify a visitor's immigration status, a source familiar with Tuesday night’s security protocol told Roll Call.

Rep Paul Gosar is an asshole from Arizona to the House of Representatives.

How to watch

It will be on TV and streaming all over. Here's a link to the WH Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/whitehouse

Here's a CBS stream that will have the speech and Democratic response: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3j4ay18xokg

Ground rules for thread

Talk about the speech. Don't get into long side conversations about specific policy stuff.

Don't post "wow" or "he just said what" or stuff like that. Include context for your posts so people not watching but reading the thread know what you are talking about.

No sick meme posting. No, we don't care what reddit or other places of commentary on the internet or doing.

This is not a thread in which to critique the media.

I not gonna lie: I am torn watching it live, or even listening to it live. I feel like I should as part of my civic duty, and possibly to see if he screws it up... But I just cannot listen to the man talk for extended periods of time. I fear it is going to be a circus. I highly doubt they will be running side by side pictures, facts, and information like the previous administration did.

    Edit: my phone keyboard sucks.

At this point, I almost expect the speech to be given by Putin, live via satellite, announcing that the state of the union is dissolved, by executive order, thirty-five minutes ago.

I've decided to wait for people to pull clips from it / highlight the amazingly bad stuff. I don't want to give him ratings.

That said I'll miss out on the conversation here. I assume this thread won't be a thing once this concludes?

I know this isn't a super serious post, but friendly reminder that the no doomsaying rule still applies here.

CBS just reported that Trump is not closing Gitmo, and will be dumping international terrorists there. It is gonna be announced at the SotU.

The Democrats should totally run a stream like that. Time delay it by like 5 minutes or something and then run his speech with like pop-up bubbles or something displaying the actual facts that contradict all his lies and shit like that.

It wouldn't reach anyone but the base but it would provide good information and ammunition and clips for people to use.

The last couple days of political news has put me in a fairly shitty mood, so I won't be watching the dipshits speech. If anything of note occurs I'm sure it'll be covered in full tomorrow.

Following up, the CBS talking heads are pretty split - some saying terrorists need to be treated and "not in my backyard" ideas, talking about the cost, talking about not closing Gitmo as Obama's largest failure... The message getting through, though, is that Trump is taking unilateral action and just informed the heads of the various committees.

I saw WaPo saying they would be doing a live fact check on Reddit, I dont know if they're doing it in a post there or on their site though. That's something I guess.

I'm already a third of the way through a six pack of hard cider. I'm going to try and rough it out, hopefully the remaining four bottles are enough to make this bearable. I really can't stand the man though, and hearing him talk is almost physically painful.
