Sacrificed many HR Odogaron materials to make the Garon LGB that I could have spent on his badass armor instead but feels worth it so far.
Odogaron has too much cool looking shit to make. I want those damn dual pickaxe things.
It's a good gun; with the changes to Normal Ammo, the Normal Ammo 2 does quite a bit of damage while also letting you be crazy mobile. Spread Ammo 1 is also pretty nuts. Recoil and ammo capacity on Stick Ammo is my only complaint about the gun honestly. I really think it's one of the best in the game.
my current gunning strategy post-changes is legiana hbg on big stuff where pierce is effective, and odogaron for stuff that has head only weakpoints or is smaller.
it's been pretty effective. i wish there was a reason to use a HBG for normal shot but maybe in the future we'll get some more balance patches.
I'm up to five captures and tail cuts, five plates...no anj gem : (
Never capture if you are ruby hunting, the carve is the ruby bro. You only can get rubys from capturing if you've maxed the research on it/investigation rewards.
p sure this isn't right. i just got a capture reward gem from a jay leno and i'm only like level 2 research on it.
There is a lot of confusion on this subject. The way it worked in previous games, you had gem chances for carves , and certain parts broken. If you captured, you were giving up 3 chances at the gem drop, and if you got one in the post hunt reward screen, it was from a broken part only. In MHW, the hunter book *looks* like this is the same case. However, if you put your cursor over the rewards in the list, it will give you a description of how you got it. I've seen a screenshot showing a gem reward, specifically from a capture (not a break), from a monster that when fully researched shows no gem chance from the rewards list.
So this is either a display bug, the hunter's manual is wrong (maybe only with this particular monster), or capture rewards can pull from the carve list. Personally, if I'm looking for a gem, I kill+carve just to make sure.
Really your best bet in my experience is to find an investigation that gives gold tier rewards because the drop rate for gems as gold rewards seems miles better than anything else.

Gems are on capture tables in previous games. And in fact, depending on monster, not on body carves. In Gen for instance, Rathalos Rubies are only from tail carve, head, wing, shiny, and capture tables. Killing it is a waste.
On the other hand, Rathian is similar, except you can't get spikes on the capture table, only on body carve.
It really, really comes down to the game and monster.

Why is Kirin so damn scary in this game?
Finally pulled the trigger on the double Kirin event and while LR, still kept me on my toes the entire time. Used to murder these things in my sleep In MH4U and Gen.

My gem was in the gold reward box, if that helps the discussion

Kirin was a pushover before, so buffs on it aren't too bad.
Daora was a complete pita already with wind, and did not need the buffs it got.
Teostra is ultimately... about the same as always.
During a capture investigation with a gold reward, I captured Odo and got a gem in the rewards section, but not the bonus or gold quest reward area.
I can now make Vice, but yeah. I didn't kill the odo to get hte gem.
Which ultimately doesn't say much, because gems are both cap and break rewards depending on monster. Without actual drop tables it's hard to say.
Well, I broke his face and crushed his tail, but I didn't kill him and still got a gem. The gem for Odogaron is not listed in the capture reward section, but under carves. IDK.
“I used to draw, hard to admit that I used to draw...”
not being able to turn kushala off with poison makes that fight just utterly miserable.
I flash bang his dumb ass to death. Having done 5 tempered Kush's since I got my investigation for it. So does everyone else.
Also got my first weapon augment! A Hammer? Shit I don't do hammer. So I made the Kush hammer! And then found out I need the gold augment and not the silver I got... GAME!!!
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
I have the quest to hunt Nergigante is 303 defense enough to stand a chance on the odd hit, and is 203 attack and 160 blast with a bow with blast coatings good enough? Or should I try to make the diablos bow that’s 50 attack power higher with a power coating?
I really wish they could have somehow made more monsters high level. there are only like 6 monsters at tier 2 and 4 monsters at tier 3 in the tempered thing.
Helped out a squaddie with a tempered Leggy hunt. I saw they put up another tier two tempered, but it was one faint and with leggy and odo I worried I'd faint and cost them a shot.

lemme fight tier 2/3 versions of more monsters!
they will probably release more as the overall population gets as far as you, trailblazer. :P

Excepting the colossal ones, boss monsters kills give 2 to 4 guaranteed body carves. Originally, it varied with monster species (Kirin 2, most 3, Diablos 4). It was standardized to 3 for all non-colossal boss monsters during 3rd generation. Later some monsters got 4 carves again.
Capture gives 2 guaranteed drops, with about a 67% chance for a 3rd, all from a different table than carves. It's traditionally had better odds at certain uncommon and rare materials such as plates and gems, while omitting certain other ones, such as claws and spikes.
There have been skills to increase kill or capture drops. In World, a Kirin armor skill increases guaranteed capture drops. In past games, the Hunter's Guild-themed armor had a skill granting an extra carve on all kills, great and small. Haven't heard of that being in World, yet.
Ideally you would change your intent to kill or capture depending on the most common way to get your desired drops.
Colossal monsters can't be captured, only killed or repelled. Kills always give superior rewards plus 6 to 9 carves, per-species, so there's simply no debate about them.

Yea that was me. Was fun. The legiana and odo quest was pretty easy tbh, the only scary part was bagelgoose dive bombing in a few times.

I figured it might be, I just didn't want to get tagged on your tempered quest. Especially when its a one faint.
I was wondering if you wanted to trap and cap that laggy or kill it, when you set bombs I was like "oh that's a kill" I felt like an idiot though I literally brought no anti aerial stuff.

Gah my boyfriend bought this game and I got like 10 hours into it and now all I wanna do is slice giant monsters but now I'm at my place and I don't even have a PS4. Is this how people end up with consoles? Even a used one is over $200 and I've been very solidly PC master race for like a decade now...
"The Red and Blue Crew" quest should be renamed "20 minutes of your mission time will be spent chasing dragons"
Three dicks and a hunter more like.
I did have a hilarious Kush kill where it was three bow users and me as a GS. Basically I'd drag it to one side and then it would jump after the bow people on the other.

highlight of the mission for me was fighting the blue one in the nest, it busting the dam, and then all the water missing him and washing me off. and it kept me tapped for combat so I couldn't fast travel back to the camp...

So answering SOSes for Diabolos is just a terrible idea, huh? Doesn't seem to be any group of four out there that can keep it together long enough to kill one of these bad boys...

I guess I unlocked high rank stuff because my god all the equipment options just fucking exploded. I have no idea what I'm doing here.
Finally put Nergi down, Diablos CB and some health boost skills put me over the edge. Went to clear out a Barroth optional quest to cool down and after Nergi Barroth feels like a glacier, soooo slow.

Lower Rank SoS's are a real crap shoot, like pink raths, nergys and diablos are basically cock blocks on new players, and so they'll get together and that can make them nightmares. Better off soloing.

Well, from what I can tell of High Rank armors I'm going to be running a Uragaan/Barroth mix set. I love playing Blunt/Stamina draining switch axe with partbreaker for multiplayer. Seems the best build.

So it seems like every melee weapon is raw damage of some flavor, elemental damage, or status ailment
When's it a good idea to build an elemental weapon? Is there a reason anyone would make e.g. a fire greatsword? Damage didn't seem appreciably higher when I used a water hammer against Anjanath.
Status ailments I can see, especially with high volume of attacks, sort of like in Souls games, but when is elemental damage better than pure raw damage (since it's dealing with two resistances)?
Generally elemental damage is better on faster-hitting weapons because they can apply elemental damage a lot better—there's no, what do you call it, movement scaling with elemental damage, so really weak hits with a given weapon will do as much fire damage as rearing back and blowing the enemy away with a colossal blow. Using True Slash on the greatsword will do the same fire damage as just whacking 'em a tiny bit with the side of the blade, so it kind of wastes the fire potential a little
Then there are cases like the Zorah Magdaros hammer, which is the second-strongest hammer in terms of raw damage and comes with a boatload of Blast element, so why the Hell not, right?
