At last, The Red Star!

So The Red Star finally saw release on one of its prospected platforms, and Penny Arcade should be excited.

The game is apparently very limited, and if it doesn't see a reprint sometime soon, you can expect that $20 price tag to skyrocket. It's back ordered at Ebgames.com, amazon is out, but you can still get super awesome signed copies from The Red Star Store, and of course this is a much better way to actually reward the creators. Each copy is signed by Christian Gossett, the creator of the comic, and it's still only twenty bucks! Hurry, these will be gone in extremely short order, I promise!

Here's the youtube video linked from the store.

I've heard the game described as a sort of isometric Contra, which gets me all hot and bothered to say the least, but I just got a hold of some of the comics (such a god dammed shame it wasn't a huge success, it is a breathtaking work), and I'd rather finish reading the series before I start my copy.

This game is incredibly good, if the demo was any indication. It was completed a while back, but the company (Acclaim?) went bankrupt before it could get released. Glad it finally was made official, I believe the demo was on the Xbox, which is why there's so much confusion for only a PS2 release.

I'm heading down to the GS today after work to pick up the only copy that came in, go me.

Nope, nearly unemployed college student, but I'm falling in love with the IP and think it's a real shame its so poorly known.

Ok. But Tekken 3 is ten years old and Tekken Force was only a minigame in Tekken 3. A ten year old game. And it was a pretty dismal minigame too.

So, let me get this straight.

It's a beat-em-up? And a shoot-em-up? I can do everything to 'em except catch 'em all?

And the setting is Soviet Russia + futuristic technology + magic?

I am so fucking sold on this game. I hope I can find a copy.

its an old-school style game that blends beat-em-up and shmups. if you dont like either genre, then it simply isnt for you. some of us, myself included, love both genres and will gladly pay $20 for a GOOD iteration of either genre.

I've had this on Xbox for a couple years now, solid solid game. Played co-op all the way through with a buddy and it's a blast. It's cool it's actually getting a release so more people can play it.

Exactly, and it's extremely sleek in execution. Absolutely fantastic world.

Glad you picked it up off the store...I'm worried much of the remaining stock will go to dealers...hopefully we'll see a reprint soon.

I was just thinking how there aren't enough communist main characters in videogames today ... and I was also thinking why there aren't many positive roles for Black and Latino characters ... and where are the polygonal Jews? Ack, my games have been tampered with by The Man.

I picked it up from Amazon last week, and yeah, it's awesome. And it supports progressive scan and widescreen modes, which makes it more bearable on an HDTV. The best description we've been able to come up with for the game is that it plays like a Capcom beat em up that doesn't get cheap shots, combined with Ikaruga, with character upgrades and customization. We spent at least 15 minutes talking about it on our last podcast, and come on people. It's 20 bucks. It will be the best 20 bucks you spend for entertainment outside of porn this year.

It's a very good game. Very oldschool arcade feel with both the shooting/fighting. If I didn't know better, I would have sworn one of the capcom arcade folks made this game. The one good game Acclaim made and it never got a proper release till now. That is just cruel.

Well, sort of the point, isn't it?

And to those planning on picking it up at some point: I can't emphasize this enough, unless this game gets a second print, you're likely screwed. Some ebstops got one in, but only like 15-20% within 50 miles of me, and most of those are gone, no more on the way. Would hate to see gamers not get this at $20. The only copy on amazon is already at 40, and I expect it'll be at least that in a couple of days.
