2018 Winter Olympics (February 9 - February 25)
A chance for the world to come together and be awesome to each other in the spirit of sportsmanship. For US peeps, watch on NBC-affiliated channels. There's lots of different sports to watch! Skiing, Biathalon, Luge, Figure Skating, Speed Skating, and many others. But the biggest one of all has to be.....
CURLING
Just look at that concentration. That grace. That skill. For some of you that may not know,
From frogtowncurling.com,
Curling is played by 2 teams of 4 players. The teams alternate throws towards the circular target (called the house). The object is to have more stones closer to the center than your opponent after all 16 stones have been thrown. Each player throws two stones, while their teammates sweep and direct the stone towards the house.
A typical game is played in 8 ends. In each end, 16 stones are thrown. Only 1 team can score in an end; the team with the closest stone to the center (the shot rock). That team scores one point for each stone closer than their opponent’s best stone.
Your team consists of a lead, second, vice skip, and skip. Once you set your line-up for the game, you must keep it that way for the entire game. The lead throws the first two stones for your team, while the second and vice sweep. The skip will call the shot, and can help sweep if needed. (Any of the 4 positions can act as ‘skip’, but you must always throw in the order which you started.)
If you have only 3 players, the lead throws the first 3 stones, the vice throws the next 3, and the skip throws the final 2 stones. (Your fourth can join in wherever when they arrive ) Subs generally should throw either lead or second.
The hammer is the last stone of the end, which is an advantage. The vice skips will flip a coin at the start of the game to determine the color of stones and the hammer for the first end. The coin toss winner chooses first, typically choosing the hammer. The means the opponent throws first. After the end, the team that scored will throw first in the next end.
It's basically like shuffleboard, but awesome.
A bunch of events have already started, and the opening ceremonies are tomorrow night! What are you looking forward to?

Looks like he's wearing an oil slick up top though so there is some protection I guess?
I'm curious to see how Hockey goes this year. Women's is going to be Canada and US for the gold because while some other countries have started to catch up, I doubt they're there yet.
Men's hockey is going to be interesting, because the NHL and IOC couldn't (or wouldn't) come to an agreement to have NHL players participate. Canada's team is made up of minor league players and players who have been competing in european leagues, I assume the US team is similar. Russia doesn't have a team but they also kind of do? Russia has been for the most part banned from competing for doping violations, but because the majority of Russian hockey players were not part of the doping scandal, they are being allowed to compete under the Olympic flag instead as the "Olympic Athletes of Russia". They're also the favourites, as the Russian KHL did agree to let its players go. Sweden should also have a good shot, as the SHL is taking part as well.

I'm gonna be happy when good things manage to happen, but I can do without the bitter aftertaste

not captured there, apparently the NBC commentator for the event is a fan of the show and explained the reference to American viewers
I've taken shits that were more intelligent and more charismatic than him.
NBC Sports app has it archived
I love watching curling, it's very soothing. Icy lawn bowls.
Speaking of, one of my lab's grad students made a winter olympics celebration video, of a 360 degree curling ... uh. Throw?
unfortunately I could only find a facebook link but it's neat.

Also Kleveland is on fire right now, dude dominated the X Games. He's gotta be the favourite.
Also not pertinent to snowboarding but I'm so hype for Gus Kenworthy at this olympics. Dude is beautiful and seems like a genuinely good guy and is out and I might love him.
Steam: Chagrin LoL: Bonhomie
