Yay, finally casual'd my way up and beyond the level 49 barrier. no carts. Insect glaive ftw.
HR after hunter cap was removed... 50! woo...
so... 50 more levels to go. *goes back to futile rare animal hunting* thinking I should just use a guide, but I kind of also think the way this game loves RNG that it wouldn't matter.

So the helm splitter attack SnS (where you Triangle+O towards a climbable wall of vines, fungi, tree... step things, etc) and then launch yourself backwards with the sword point down does "driving" damage (no idea about technical terms in this game) so if you get it high enough you're just drilling a monster down from above.
so fun. looks awesome with the Rapier, too.
in other MH games it was easy cause I could find and pick maybe two weapons because they had either made the others massively underpowered or a pain to use. IN MHW it's just like... everything's fun, everything has good QoL.
Well, played MonHun all weekend. Got the Ryu event knocked out completely. Got my Wyvern "Steel", and enough of the commissions to make "Impact" whenever I get around to getting the mats to making it, which seems like it won't be for a while.
Just finished the Rathalos/Diablos quest. I have an Optional to kill Kirin, who wrecked me hard with them lightning strikes.
I also got Sinister Cloth from a Safari, and hooooo my gaw, the Palico looks super cute with that outfit and I kind of want to make it now? :P
Ok I can confirm this is a thing: If someone doesn't login to the game after what seems to be 21 days, they are automatically removed from squads they are in.
I'm really trying to wrap my head around when am elemental weapon would make sense over a high-RAW weapon.
The problem I'm having is, I main GS, and the answer there is: 'Never'.
But I'm trying to branch out into both SnS and Lance, and I have the idea that its not nearly as definitive. Mostly I'm still confused on two points one big and one small.
For element to exceed a big honking Raw damage value how much weakness does a monster have to have? Like say against a Rathalos its weaknesses are 2* Thunder and 3* Dragon, so is it best to only bring Dragon against it or Raw otherwise? Or is Thunder going to do about as well as Raw?
Secondly, should I even bother with elements on Lance?

Probably? I found this a while back but my math fu is weak so I haven't checked it myself. With lance you can be pretty much hit whatever monster part you like at will so can get the most of the element/hitzone weakness. And they don't have that diablos line with so much raw it overpowers all other of weapons, most of their non elemental weapons are kinda meh in my book. Plus the elemental ones have all the best visuals(don't worry, Odo's is nice looking too).

I am glad there is one more thing out there making squad management a chore.

I remember someone recently mentioning that the first affinity augment is the best value for damage, but is it still worth it for a negative affinity weapon or should I take the +damage augment instead? Like my deviljoh gunlance which is -30% affinity.

It still raises the dps the same amount. The truth is the math shows that in most cases attack and affinity has almost the same value in dps.
The higher the raw the more affinity wins. So that is deviljho.
But either works. I ended up doing attack on my deviljho lance because I had the ruby and didn't want to farm for the odo gem. They are very close to each other.

My back-of-the-napkin understanding of elemental weapons is that they are most effective on fast-hitting weapon types, so pretty bleh on GS's. Particularly good on bows because it's fast firing AND you can multiple hits in per shot, but that said the Diablos bow is still so good that you can use it for everything and get above-average DPS.
Blah, I'm not a fan of this daily bounties stuff. I missed out on yesterday's, and I'll get home just in time for the new "day" to roll over on their servers, so that's two days I missed. Oh well. At least it's a two week event!

Something else to consider is that while the hunter guide will show you a rating for that monster, only certain parts may be weak to that element and some may even resist it. For instance maybe only the tail and head are weak, while the legs and stomach resist. I do not know if there is a guide out there yet for each monster.
My brother and I made the rocket GS. He then suggested that we break Nergigante's face with them. Neither of us ever used GS before. It was a bit of a struggle at first but Nergi went down. That was satisfying.
Huge thanks to @Sirialis for helping me get through Tempered Kirin. He dished out the dps with some high quality dual blade work. Carried me right to the end. I hate that fight so much.
Now I can properly join in on the deco grind!
Sirialis was my hero for that quest as well.

I just need a wyvern gem and I'll have the rocket gs maxed. I'm excited to use it with my hidden element set. I've been having fun with my Master Bang using it and it's become one of my favorite gear load outs.

I'm not saying this to stop you from what you think will be fun, but you get more damage out of the Wyvern Ignition with a single non-elemental boost gem than from unlocking the fire element on it and then you also get the benefit of not having to worry about elemental resists on a monster.

I could barely beat a barroth the first time i used a greatsword.
I still barely can.
Other weapons i am bad with include:
anything not a bow or SnS.

Thank you for this post. I did challenges for the first time this week due to the Spring Event dailies. I loaded up the double Odo challenge, looked at the available weapons and didn't see CB, so I thought I'd try out GS. I died so fast over and over, it was laughable. Ended up finishing it (very slowly) with Lance.
I'm not sure how anyone plays this game without a shield.
Speaking of crown hunting, I'll probably be on doing the 5-monster zone quests on repeat most of this week (also in the final stages of 100% Ni No Kuni 2 so splitting time with that).

Well those arena challenges are optimized around two players. So solo, I can see that the defensive weapons are much easier to bring to bear.
I could probably easily do two Odogarons with GS if I could bring my own loadout. Heck just a Rocksteady mantle would be enough.
So I have this roadblock when it comes to switching out for SnS or Lance -- on my GS build I have 11 gem slots. With Lance and SnS the best I can get and also have some usuable skills are 7-8. Are you guys running those weapons without any Vitality decos, kinda just hoping you don't get oneshot?

The GS has literally the worst block in the game and it absolutely wrecks your sharpness, too.

No, it has the 3rd worst/best block in the game (after a single Shield on a HBG and a Sword and Shield), I believe. And I think it only shaves off a single hit of sharpness per block. I don't even know if the sharpness hit is confirmed for World, given all of the other QoL improvements that weapons received in this game.
I mean, blocking a roar and then hitting the monster with a charge is a time-honored way to get in a free charge attack.
For double O-Dog, I just brought the HBG. It has a Triple Shield configuration, and if you hold down aim, you can strafe. If you just walk strafe left, it basically allows you to sidestep most of the charging and swiping attacks, and the ones that you can't, you can easily block with your triple Shield. Piercing shots allow you to shoot through an O-Dog and hit the other O-Dog at the same time, too. I think you also get status shots, so you can set up at least one dog to eat some rocks in the middle of the arena.

I'm pretty sure HBG gets the gillie mantle for that arena. Any time you have that mantle in the special arena, you can activate it as you go in, grab a stone, and use the stone to lead the target(s) to the middle so that you can open up with some falling rocks. Follow up with a few mortar shells and you can shave a lot of time off the fight real quick.
I'm always activating bounties and trying to get as many as done as possible, so I'm sitting at around 100 heavy armor spheres. (Or whatever the 80 point ones are called).

two of my lance builds (handi 5 set, hazak set) have lots of room. and i threw the hazak gloves on my odo set, since gloves were non-essential and they can give you health boost 3 by themselves
