It’s amazing to me how often these administration figures can’t resist mixing their evil with their short-sighted venality. Truly the worst people.

its because nobody ever stops them, they keep getting away with it, and have been their whole lives

Well, we've filled up a thread with all... this, and it shows no sign of stopping, so - time for a new one!

I don’t see a new thread yet, so this seems the best place to put this. Trump has just tweeted the name of his newly chosen National Security Advisor.

It’s not a name I recognize right off the bat, which I’m taking as a positive in this instance.

*edit* Ok apparently this is the guy who went to Sweden to help free A$AP Rocky?

Odds heavily in favour of that being the whole reason he's getting this job.

Also "very successful" ... just, ugh. He's got the stupidest tics.

Trump runs an isolationist strategy. He has engaged in less conflicts than Bush, Obama, and Clinton. I'm not praising him and the fervent gnashing can be directed elsewhere. I'm simply pointing out that Trump has not been particularly enthusiastic about pulling the trigger on foreign wars.

He is really willing to stir them up but I would agree that when the logical conclusion of his policies happens he shys away. But I am kinda worried with iran because as isolationist as he is I can easily see him justifying it if the saudi are willing to pay enough for what Trumps sees as our nations mercenaries.

Well, he fired the General Counsel for the Department of Homeland Security, and we have an "acting" one.

New York Times Reporter Zolan Kanno-Youngs: NEW: Months after the purge of Homeland Security leadership, the White House has officially fired John Mitnick, the general counsel of DHS. His firing comes as DHS continues to fight multiple lawsuits challenging its immigration policies.

Here are all of the "Acting" positions in DHS.

    Acting Secretary
    Acting Deputy Secretary
    Acting General Counsel
    Acting Under Secretary for Management
    Acting CBP Commissioner
    Acting ICE Director
    Acting USCIS DIrector
    Acting FEMA Administrator

From the wording on CNN, it suggests that he's particularly adept at navigating Trump's instability(also see: ass-kissing), seemingly holding Trump's favor longer than most.
    ...

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday, Trump highlighted O'Brien's praise of him in securing the release of hostages.

"Robert O'Brien said, 'Trump is the greatest hostage negotiator in history.' He happens to be right," Trump said, according to pool reporters. "We are 38-0. 38-0, ask Robert. In fact, I had never heard the term. Robert O'Brien said Donald Trump is the greatest hostage negotiator of all time. 38-0. At the time he said it we were 29-0. We are 38-0."

CNN has contacted the State Department for further details on the numbers cited by Trump.

Trump personally dispatched O'Brien to help free US rapper A$AP Rocky from Swedish prison earlier this year. The hostage negotiator interviewed for the post with the President and acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney last week.
O'Brien enjoyed support from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is now the most influential national security voice in the administration.

Trump, who is known to respond well to flattery, has recounted praise from O'Brien in tweets, suggesting that the new national security adviser also knows how to handle the President and his mercurial moods.

O'Brien has also made Trump look good -- giving him numbers to boast about and successes that made for high profile media coverage.

During an Oval Office meeting in March, O'Brien praised Trump for his success returning American hostages.

"This wouldn't happen with all of these hostages and detainees without the support of the President," he said. "The President has had unparalleled success in bringing Americans home without paying concessions."

On O'Brien, you can see his foreign policy ethos on his 2016 book:
While America Slept: Restoring American Leadership to a World in Crisis

Robert C. O'Brien's collection of essays on U.S. national security and foreign policy, with a forward by Hugh Hewitt, is a wake up call to the American people. The world has become steadily more dangerous under President Obama's "lead from behind" foreign policy. The Obama Administration's foreign policy has emboldened our adversaries and disheartened our allies. Indeed, Obama's nuclear deal with Iran is a 1938 moment. At the same time, the U.S. military has been cut and risks returning to the hollow force days of the 1970s. O'Brien lays out the challenges and provides the common sense "peace through strength" solutions that will allow the next president to make America great again.

    So there's that.

What the fuck does "hollow force" mean? Does he think the US military has not been exceedingly large since WWII? Does he think we have a "hollow force" unless we are always fighting a godsdamned war?

He's a die hard true believer in American Exceptionalism, and feels that America needs to distribute that across the globe by flexing with military might on anyone and everyone. His concept of "hollow force" is that we aren't using enough of it's capabilities when we do dispatch it in international theaters. He's the type where you should start with the MOAB and work up to glassing shit.

He did some policy wank work under Bush and Cheney and even had Dick taken aback by his ideas on occasion.

I grew up with a lot of toxic bullshit about being proud that the US never lost a war

Vietnam was ofc always excludes as well as was knowledge about any of the US’s involvement throughout our history in all sorts of shenanigans

I cannot find the source or even remember the exact quote, but in the aftermath of WWII, there was a very real attitude in politics that, "If we don't build the bomb, they will."

One answer was effectively, "Building ours won't stop them building theirs. So now everyone has the bomb, but if we don't USE the bomb, they will. And then everyone's used the bomb, then what?" They were promptly labeled a communist, I'm sure.

But, yeah, the whole attitude isn't new, and it's why we've been geared up and ready to fight WWIII since VJ Day.
