There's a lot of really good art and flavor text in this set.

It feels like a lot of the art direction for this set moved away from the high-polish centralized style direction they've been using the past few years, and instead invoked a more classic look with a hint of Phil Foglio. It's good.

I feel like the flavor text leans a bit lighter than usual as well. Not sure if it's an intentional direction or if it's just one of the benefits of returning to a well-established world so they can play a bit more humor off of a setting everyone is already familiar with.

Wow, a 1/1 flier with lifelink at common.

That is a hell of a turn one move in limited.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

That and they're setting up for some serious shit come April so get your laughs in now while you still can.

Hmm. I feel like it's trying to go more in the direction of D&D streams than other MTG shows, in that it's focused heavily on them interacting in real time and doesn't really focus on the actual state of the game much. That's not bad, but with D&D it kind of... doesn't matter if you don't know exactly what's going on, its still easy to drop in. Here, though, I absolutely couldn't throw this on in a background without being lost because I'd have to 100% memorize the board state to know what was happening.

Hmm. Yea I love any excuse to see Mike and Jerry interact. And it seemed like this was trying to avoid being too much like Spellslingers but by doing so made the Magic game itself almost too detached but it was still the entire focus of all the conversation. Like I'm not sure what is gained by not actually showing most of the game. It made the magic playing part less interesting and it's not like they were talking about things unrelated to the game so it seems like a bit of a weird decision to me.

Hopefully it will find it's legs because I was really looking forward to seeing them play some Magic. I think it just needs to bring the magic a little bit more forward and keep track of the game a bit better if Magic is the focus.

Even just having the life totals would help, though I can dream that they put a hyper-condensed boardstate graphic somewhere

Yes even that would go a long way. Just something to keep track of the back and forth of the game to be a bit more invested in how it's going would be great.

It's been the rule for an extremely long time. Otherwise, there's no reason to be on the draw (and no reason to call it "on the draw")

Yeah I'm gonna guess that was part of the huge 6th Edition rules overhaul because I don't remember it existing before my Visions -> Mirrodin hiatus.

The cuts for magic hour are pretty strange, like the justice strike on a 2/4 to kill it, but not mentioning that it had damage marked on it. (hopefully that was the case.)

It looks like Magic Hour is going for a Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee vibe, which is honestly a GREAT idea, but the success in CCGC (uuggh) is that the guests get a chance to chat and riff off of Jerry (or vice versa). THey also talk a bit about where they are, what they are driving.

In the future, I'd love to know more about the location (I have no idea what the Mox is, although I can guess) and I don't know who Anna is (sorry, i've only heard of the waffle crew recently!). I don't think they need to get into the nitty gritty of the board state too much. What's important is the atmosphere of playing with a friend in a cool place, and I think they are on their way to nailing that.

I got a CCC vibe from it too, just from the way it was edited. It's an interesting direction, makes it more about the guests and conversation than the game, although there's some room for chat there the same way that there's some occasional talk about the coffee/food on CCC.

This sort of condenses a lot of things that were floating around the periphery of my awareness of the pro scene. The Silver Showcase mismanagement, the inability for pros to sustain an actual pro career, just a sort of low roar of bad decisions being made for a pretty extended period, and my sense that Gerry is a stand-up, principled guy ever since he auctioned off all his PT-winning gear to benefit Planned Parenthood. Have to respect him for bringing attention to it all as an overarching issue, and for preemptively putting his money where his mouth is.

I mean, Mike and Jerry playing games is fun, but Mike and Jerry aren't particularly good at them, so this feels like it'd be hard to watch.

It would be fun as long as the viewers understood it would 100% be Kitchen Table Magic and if they are fine watching Kitchen Table Magic. I would love that. But yea you'd have to go in knowing that.

There's nothing substantive they could possibly have said so quickly after Gerry's statement. The real test for them will be whether they move forward appropriately, or if they try to brush past the concerns he brought forward.

I don't have huge faith in WotC's capability to properly address the issues with their "pro" system, but I hope people don't pile on Rich for having to read that statement. He doesn't set policy.

    Here's the thing with WotC:

Nothing Gerry Thompson said in his post should be a surprise to anyone. If it is a surprise to WotC, they are not paying attention. They've been perpetually running a system where they're dangling half a pickle in front of people and proclaiming it's a carrot. The "Magic pro" lifestyle is absolutely unsustainable long term. I think Owen Turtenwald mentioned in a year if a platinum pro wins a pro tour and gets all of their appearance fees for the year without placing in any other event, they are working the equivalent of near 60 hours a week and making about $6 an hour for that work. Hearthstone pros earn leaps and bounds more than MTG pros, both annually and "hourly". Quite a large portion of that has to do with branding and marketing. Magic has been a game from the 90s for 25 years, and it's being operated like we're still in the 90s. For a company that's making as much money as they are, you'd think they could inject some of it back into the community. The actual factual dream is becoming famous enough that you can get a job being a commentator. That's really sad.

I'm curious what people think about this draft deck and if you guys agree with splashing Hadanya's Climb. That card has been money in my wins, and splashing the green hasn't been a factor in any of my losses. That card is pretty fun though!

Especially when you consider how the shitlords in the community treat most of the commentators, even former PT winners.

Hah. Even only drawing from the cards currently available there are still some dangerous rolls. Not a Phage lottery by any means but Belzenlock = deck yourself is pretty harsh.

Oh ya , I'm guessing Momir a lot more predictable on Arena over MTGO since drawing from a much tinier pool of cards.

Still probably fun tho I bet, just man full out every creature in magic ever Momir was great
