Out today!

On PC and PS4!

No prior knowledge of 1 needed! It's like 100's of years later.

An action RPG with, and be still my heart, Dark Cloud/Suikoden/My Life As a King style town building.

Apparently combat is quite easy and also, the game isn't 100 hours long. It's around 30 for the main story.

Looking forward to dipping into this tonight. The town building is what tipped me over, I'm always a sucker for that shit. Well, that and it not being impossibly long.

Mostly I'm hearing its beautiful, but far too easy. I really enjoyed the previous title aesthetically.

I completely forgot about this. I'll have to pick it up next week.

I really liked the first game despite the combat being kinda lame. Looking forward to building some towns up something fierce. Those were my favorite parts of the dark cloud games. Hopefully this one takes it to the next level.

Finally got to play for about 2 hours last night.

Combat is fun and is also easy. That's not bothering me but I'm just trying to get to the kingdom building right now.

It feels a little budget, like they had to cut some corners. Not bad but little stuff like not much voiced lines stands out.

I LOVE the way the overworld looks.

There is a sense of speed to everything. There's not long conversations repeating the same thing we already know ad nauseum, no delayed character intros where you get to know every single aspect of a person before they join the party, shit just GOES. And we'll see how I feel 5, 10 hours in but right now? I'm into it.

    1st chapter spoilers
    Roland is an insane concept.
I'm used to transmigration stories, but I think this character really is unbelievable
President of United States finds themselves surviving a nuke,
waking up in a cat eared child's bedroom 40 years younger,
near immediately comes to terms with everything,
and starts murdering ratmen with his pistol and SWORDFIGHTING wtf
    2nd chapter spoilers
Roland cares deeply about this baby king in exile, and decides to not try to return.
It's a very weird idea of what a president would do.
Quick to murder, quick to sacrifice Arnella,
Also, cares deeply about a kingdom and a child's quest
to create a land where everyone can be happy.
Roland is def not Obama, Bill Clinton, George Bush, Trump.
Evan would probably die by mouse sword immediately, if any of those folk transmigrated.
Feels like a Yakuza character. I wonder if that is an impression of American political leadership.
Super competent, brutal, courageous and idealistic.

Having a lot of fun with the game.

Cor! they got Brad Shoemaker to voice Lofty.

I'm about 10 hours in and pretty disappointed in this. The music is repetitive and never fits, the characters are annoying JRPG/anime stereotypes, gameplay is dull, story is dumb and the combat is just a speedbump that constantly keeps you from getting where you want to go so it's more an annoyance than a game mechanic. Plus I've never liked the Ghibli aesthetic; it's really unimaginative.

I'm gonna give it until I get to the Kingdom Building and see how I like that but so far this is a solid 4/10.

Woah! Really? I've loved the music. Especially that track in the canyon early on. So fucking good. I don't normally really notice game music too much but this game is one of the few times I've actually said to myself "wow the music in this game is rad"

Played another couple of hours last night.

It's a weird game. I like roaming around in the big areas and fighting monsters and picking up glowing things. I enjoy that less on the overworld because it's slower.

I like how speedy the combat is and it's goofy fun but it's also borderline a Dynasty Warriors style "mash X to murder" thing with like no chance of dying.

I like how fucking FAST the story is going. Persona is great but my GOD does it drone on and take it's fucking time. I feel at Chapter 3, I'm at the place I would be 20 hours into Persona. But it's also the lightest thing in the world, it's very kid-friendly and puff.

I did my first skirmish last night and that was super cool, made me think of Little King's Story.

Still and all, enjoying it. It's a nice, comfortable game to play and I'm pushing hard to that kingdom building.

That's weird, I'm the same. Game music is backgorund stuff I never really notice but this time I was like "Why is this playing? Why is this still playing?"

I kinda wish it went a little slower.
Give Evan time to earn his achievements.
Right now it seems like he plops into town, does one thing, then is everyone's lord and savior.
It's a weird take on world conquest.

Hmm...folks saying the gameplay is super easy is kind of putting me off (And please I'm not looking for Dark Souls, sometimes you're just looking to be engaged not necessarily die constantly).

The town building sounds interesting though and I'm a fan of Sim games also Dark Cloud 2 is my favorite Level 5 game so how good is that?

My main problem with the gameplay is there's lots of options and strategy but the difficulty makes it all pointless. I'm ok with either complex strats or easy gameplay but put the both together and it just seems frustrating.

The town building isn't like a free form sorta thing like Dark Cloud. The buildings have set spots to be placed so it's more of a resource/town manager as opposed to a builder. The focus is on finding people to populate your town and assigning them to roles they are good at and using resources to upgrade which parts of town you want to upgrade. Most of which relate back to the regular gameplay in some way or another creating the gameplay loop.

It's very fun, just don't want you to get the wrong impression of what it is.

Hmm...sounds interesting but I'll probably wait for a small discount.

Lot of stuff I want coming out in April so I'll not trying to buy too many games anyway.

    It's very bravely default.
I like it because it's like a Mr. Rogers Simulator.
Just going around helping folk with small stuff, is lite and fluffy fun.

Finally got to the kingdom building stuff.

Yep, really looking forward to building this up. Gonna go recruiting tonight.

I'm enjoying the easy combat; it means I don't have to grind and be super focused while playing. I'm burning through some podcasts while moseying from place to place. I've had some reasonably challenging fights being mad under leveled and I'm ok with that.

Good music, even if it loops too soon.

    And damn, Goldpaw looks NICE.

I'm getting my butt kicked by red dudes.
    I'm really bad at dodging.
I think I would enjoy it more if it were all a little snappier.
Doesn't quite feel as responsive as a demon souls style action rpg,
or I guess the most recent comparison is monster hunter world.
Mostly I'm just terrible at any action rpg, period.
I feel like all those years ago when playing dark cloud / rogue galaxy / etc,
I spent more time blocking. Blocking feels bad in this.

Would really prefer to automate the combat (maybe have some fiddly gambit style bits)
or have it be turn based.

    -

I keep looking at the town maps filled with optional characters I haven't chatted with,
thinking, man I don't wanna chat with all of these folk.

Then I do, and come away pleasantly surprised, pretty much enjoying these little character blurbs.
Good character npc writing in this game,
even if interacting with them can be a little daunting.

Combat feels incredibly simple in some ways, and complex in other ways that don't necessarily make it more fun.

Switching between three weapons each with their own bars to fill doesn't actually feel like it adds anything to combat, but makes everything feel a bit more fiddly

But then so far the hardest part of trying to engage with the gameplay in any meaningful way is that the fights are too easy for it to matter.

That said, the characters are likeable enough and it gets by on charm so I'm gonna stick with it.

ahahahah oh man the entrance scene into Hydropolis has me back all in on this game.

This game is so childish/for kids and then they do shit like
have a Sub/Dom relationship with heel stepping and it's like WHAT IS GOING ON

I actually only use 1 weapon slot. Because A) I hate weapon swapping in general 2) it just makes an already stupidly easy game easier so it means I actually spend more time using regular attacks than spamming specials.

Other Stacey restriction to make it slightly more fun: no higgledy actives. Also haven't leveled any higgledies. Only using my specials when Zing hits 100% on that 1 weapon treating it like a limit break. Party members also only have 1 weapon. No blocking, dodges only. No items unless I need to revive a party member to make sure they get their xp.

Still super easy so I can only imagine what boss fights would be like without having those restrictions. I really like the combat that and wish I had a reason to dig into all the background systems. I love lots of fiddly bits to make my characters stronger but in this it would mean every fight was over before I got to do anything and since I like the combat that would just be bad.

I bought this entirely because of the bombcast and I’ll start it up this weekend. The opening sounds wild.

The reason it doesn't feel as responsive is very directly the fact that the dodge will not animation cancel. So you have to be pickier with when you attack. You can just react to any enemy movement by just dodging and then avoid all damage. You have to finish your attack animation and then dodge. So don't be over aggresive if you're actually fighting an enemy that can hurt you.

I’m enjoying the combat in this game a lot more than the first. Sure it’s pretty button mashy and not too hard but it’s also fun.

Really have the ball rolling on kingdom building now and I like the loop of doing a main mission, bopping back to spread out that money in your kingdom, do some side content, back to the kingdom, repeat. It breaks up everything in a nice way. And combat is more challenging now that I haven't leveled up much and am doing some side content enemies. I actually like the easy combat but having to heal and swap weapons and dig into the Tactics menu is a nice changeup.

I'm sure it's completely coincidental, but the design of the
fantasy nuclear reactor from chapter six reminds me of one of the nanotech creation engines from 'Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising'.

    Which is awesome. 8-)
