Am I the only person who thinks calling that one interaction transphobic is an overreaction? To me it seems like a clumsy way of stating a pretty normal sexual preference, entirely in keeping with how poorly socialized 18 year olds act.

Just because it's "pretty normal" (by which I'm assuming you mean "common" rather than the more questionable "healthy") or accurate to 18-year-olds doesn't make it not transphobic.

Are you saying that having a sexual dispreference for trans folk is inherently transphobic?

The issue is more that the implication of the language used is that trans women are not actually women

In of itself no - but phrasing it in such a manner very much is.

Edit: The point being that not being sexually attracted to transgender individuals is not itself a sign of transphobia (though it's an indication that one should probably think about why that is the case for oneself), but the act of asking someone so bluntly and offensively about their status is very much a transphobic act.

Anyway I'm sure if I approached this book when I was like 16 I'd have been extremely pandered to

I mean hell, I read a lot of Wheel of Time at that age, I did not have the ability to discern for quality

But I've grown up and tried to expand my perceptions and I think for a lot of people on this forum specifically, recent events like GG and essentially all of 2016 on have really forced people to examine their own a bit more. Though I think more positively, more diverse voices in actually audible places calling that stuff out also helps

It's harder to wear blinders and pretend everything is, in fact, fine and normal and equal when it comes to media, though that hasn't filtered out to the mainstream yet to the same degree. It plays a big part in the reactions here versus elsewhere.

The thing that keeps getting me is the literal page where he just lists references.

    Just the big ol' list.

Like it's a GRRM Genealogy in the middle of the book, but with 80s pop.

So, I can't imagine this movie's any good.
The book's central thesis is that nothing matters if you're good at video games, which clicks with me because that's what I thought when I was 6.
But that's shortly drowned out by 'No-one on the internet cares who you are or how good you are at games' at 6 and a half, which somewhat spoils the immersion.

Also Art3mis should have won rather than the protagonist.

A lot of the excerpts from the book read like a person who hasn't thought much at all about issues like racism but is still writing about them. The two pages where a black lesbian character explains why she has a white, male avatar is what I would expect from such a person. Knowing that the character is partly based on Harry Knowles does not help.

How much anime is in this thing anyway if it's been updated for "modern" references?

I fully expect there to be the great armies of Homestuck and My Little Pony too.

    There won't be.

There will be shit that the studio can easily license without too much trouble.

Homestuck won't even enter into it at all, especially since it has absolutely nothing to do with 80s culture whatsoever and is unrelated to the studio's ability to license media.

If you make a habit of asking women whether they're trans or not before you'll allow them the privilege of dating you, you may not be transphobic (I don't cede this ground but whatever), but you are absolutely a fuckboy.

if a person says they like women

    but not trans women

what does that tell you about them?

spoiler: it tells you they don't think trans women are women

Blizzard has figured this out for their dumb shit.

I'm sure whatever the fuck super VR land can figure this dumb shit out in 20 whatever the fuck.

How do the character names in the book work? Do the OASIS names have to be unique or are they allowed to overlap? Do you expect me to believe that Art3mis was not taken three seconds after OASIS was first created?
