it's a betrayal of the entire lesson in the Iron Giant film

    it's out of place

ofc it's not actually the Iron Giant, just a fake replica in the Oasis

which is.... kind of an apt analogy for RPO lmao

Exactly. That entire movie is about not assuming the worst of a person just because they're different.

Putting in Giant as nothing more than a gun and a "I know that character" moment is terrible.

it's kinda the best example of why I don't like the referencing in RPO

it's all just gaudy crap, used as a way to one-up things or show off or make the reader go "I know that!"

none of the references have their point of origin respected or acknowledged at all

now, this could have been written in a way to be a critique of the nature of the Oasis, and the way that the people within the story interact with all this flash stuff they don't understand

but it never actually does that, it's quite the letdown

Iron Giant with a gun fighting people would work as an extremely on the nose message about nerds loving a work but refusing to engage with it on more than the most surface level even when the film screams a message at the audience.

So of course it is probably used unironically in the film.

His comment on the Iron Giant scene is good - basically, he points out that yes, it's a betrayal of the character, but also notes that it's also how someone who doesn't know/care about the character would use it as a skin, and where the movie falls down is not pointing out the discordance.
