His comment on the Iron Giant scene is good - basically, he points out that yes, it's a betrayal of the character, but also notes that it's also how someone who doesn't know/care about the character would use it as a skin, and where the movie falls down is not pointing out the discordance.

yep that's pretty much what I'm getting at, totally agree with him

    (i'll watch that vid later!)

    The thread

Iron Giant is in it and is used as a weapon.

When the entire theme of Iron Giant is that he is who he chooses to be.

Maybe he chose to be a war machine in this movie?

it's a betrayal of the entire lesson in the Iron Giant film

    it's out of place

ofc it's not actually the Iron Giant, just a fake replica in the Oasis

which is.... kind of an apt analogy for RPO lmao

Look, it's okay if your hero turns out to be a milkshake duck. But, stating that this. Iron giant isn't yours iron giant isn't going to erase that. Maybe the iron giant was always an asshole? Maybe he didn't accidentally kill the boy at the end if the movie?

What does happen in the Iron Giant is the Iron Giant vaporizing like six Sherman tanks full of guys just back from Korea who did not join the service to fight clinkety-clank behemoths from beyond the stars

Having a nostalgia film set in 2044 is really weird. Most of the nostalgia heavy films I can think about are either about people reminiscing about their childhoods, just set in the time period people are nostalgic for without any framing device, or about young people learning about their parents past through means like time travel.

Its...its not the Iron Giant. Its an avatar used by someone in a VR program that looks exactly like the Iron Giant, but still isn't the actual Iron Giant. I mean, Freddy Kruger isn't getting taken out by a laser, but an avatar that looks exactly like him is.

it's all just gaudy crap, used as a way to one-up things or show off or make the reader go "I know that!"

none of the references have their point of origin respected or acknowledged at all

now, this could have been written in a way to be a critique of the nature of the Oasis, and the way that the people within the story interact with all this flash stuff they don't understand

but it never actually does that, it's quite the letdown

Also like, it's not like other movies haven't successfully done the referential thing to video games

heck, this movie/thread inspired me to watch Scott Pilgrim again last night

that sort of referential tribute can absolutely be done well, but the story itself has to be able to stand on it's own if the references were removed

if you take all the references out of RPO (the book, anyway) it essentially ceases to exist

    See, here's my hot take

Imagine a group of kids playing pretend fight.

And one kid is like 'I'm the iron giant and I use my death beam!'

And everyone is like 'oh wow that's awesome'

But one kid is like 'no, you can't, because the iron giant will never do that! You're not allowed! Stop being the iron giant!'

And everyone is trying to have fun but the one kid keeps at it, even bringing other kids to argue with him. Before you know it

    Nobody is having fun.

Now, who's to blame? The kid who just want to pretend to be the iron giant it the kid who doesn't show anyone to do things that goes against the way he's comfortable with?

if this was a home movie made by kids playing pretend, sure, let the kids have fun

This is a major motion picture with a $175 million budget, directed by someone with multiple Academy Awards - I'm going to expect a bit more thought an nuance

It basically takes those bits of StarTrek where they don't reference any pop culture after the 60s or 90s or whatever (for obvious reason) and instead goes "Nope, that's on purpose! Things don't get better!" It's toxic in myriad ways.

If you show the Iron Giant as a war-machine enough times that is what he becomes in the larger scope of popular culture.

It is the same issue most of us had with Man of Steel having Superman snap a bad guy's neck.

The movie is set in the future, maybe in 2021 an Iron Giant sequel is released where the Iron Giant grows bored with its life of pacifism and decides its time to blow some shit up. Don't pretend that Michael bay wouldn't make that movie.
