I had it in my head to do a realistic interpretation of DBZ, since I've been a fan of the show when it came on fox every Saturday morning at 7am. As exams wind down I finally had time to crank this out last night. Yay.
and the sketch
*waits for iruka to gush about how she likes the b/w sketch better*:P
The hair is pretty straw-like overall, I'd recommend going back in with a larger brush and working on the hair in clumps rather than scratching out each and every follicle.
I'm also not very convinced by the facial expression, primarily the mouth looks more like a llama chewing on some cud than bellowing forth a blood-chilling kamehameha. Some indication of flaring of the nostrils and the skin fold that runs from above the nostril down to the chin when baring teeth like that might go a way toward helping that.
The eye on the right is also totally symbolized, find some reference if you need to.

Kill all the bright colors, and you ain't got no contrast...especially in the energy-ball. That thing is supposed to be emitting light, right? So why isn't it? The ball is a bit too dark - almost the same tone as his skin.
Another thing with the same tones are the "fire" around him and the face in the background. Everything blends into everything else...you've got to watch out for the tones as well as the hues.
Lastly - that eye is all kinds of wrong. Get ye to a reference.
Yeah, those eyes could some more definition. They don't look like they have lids.
And, I mean, if you know the black contrast/shape is better in your b&w's, don't whine about it, work it in the color. S'not my fault this happens every time. ND handled that shit pretty awesomely though *h5*
I don't know what I'm doing here as I don't come in here much and I can't draw for toffee, but as a fan of the Dragonballs I just want to say that purely on a stylistic bases (because I have no business judging drawing skill) I'd like to see the faces a bit different in any future pictures. That Goku scares me a bit too much than he is supposed to. The hair is nice but perhaps a bit too Manga for a "realistic" drawing. I'm looking forward to the sequel. 8-)

Good start...some sat/contrast work and facial touchups would give this a really nice boost. Also, do Vegeta next please.
