Is anyone eyeballing Extinction? I'm curious to see reviews for it...it looks up my alley. I'm hesitant about it because it's a smaller dev with sort of a big ambition, but I've watched it go from looking pretty bleh to looking awesome, so I'm hopeful.

Is this the Berylline life simulator we deserve?

This is not the kind of librarianship that I've been involved in, but there are a lot of different types! At my last job it was just a lot of computer help and stuff like telling people that no, I will not help them scan in their car registration and change the car's year of manufacture so the guy can be an Über driver.

@Massena Shovel Knight? A lot of it is way easier than it looks, and the game is super fun so it's easy to stay motivated and keep trying to get past the tricky bits. It makes for good practice for 2D games, though I dunno how applicable it'd be for FPS or fighting games, for instance. If you've never played it before; if you liked NES-era Mega Man, Capcom's Duck Tales game, Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and/or Super Mario Bros 3, you should give it a shot.

Thanks! I've been meaning to play Chrono Trigger. And apparently they're gonna have a patch out for it soon with the original graphics. Also heard some great things about Iconoclasts, especially around the story.

So thanks! Also, this is you:

    Basically.

You can use fast.com to check and get a more accurate reading (the amusing part is that it's run by Netflix using their own servers, so if ISPs throttle netflix streaming they'll be throttling their speedtest as well).

My take on the Fran/FFXII discussion; I feel like it's okay to have a femme-fatale character in your games, as long as it makes sense in-character? Like Catwoman in Batman. But Fran isn't supposed to be some sultry Mata Hari archetype, is she? I'm not aware of any reason for her to be running around in nothing but black lingerie. And the Viera in general are supposed to be forest-dwelling hunter-gatherers, aren't they? They should be wearing outfits appropriate to that kind of cultural background.

It's like Sophitia Alexandra in Soul Calibur IV; mother of two, happily married, respected priestess of Athena (despite the series being set during the Age of Exploration), wears a sheer babydoll nighty that only vaguely looks like Ancient Greek clothing. Because that's what that character would choose to wear to battle evil demons and undead pirates in epic sword-fights. :rotate:

SmokeStacks has a point that it's not just the women in Final Fantasy and other Japanese brands, but they definitely get way more of it. All of it is ridiculous regardless of the character's sex or gender (looking at you, Simon Belmont in Castlevania: Judgment).

The key thing is whether it's emphasizing titillation to the detriment of characterization and storytelling. If it makes sense that a given character would dress provocatively, then creators should feel free to design them that way. But even then there's additional factors that can separate one portrayal from another (like cinematography choices); there's nuance to doing it right & not being gross, and if a creator can't/won't be bothered to be sensitive to these things then they're better off avoiding it in the first place.

Edit: Of course none of this really applies when the purpose of the work itself is to be titillating, like DOA: Xtreme Volleyball or those Senran Kagura games; that's a whole different discussion.

Also @SmokeStacks; Dragon Quest has kept things in check pretty well over the years. None of the Visual Kei band reject outfits, etc. Of course, the Akira Toriyama based art style might not be to your liking, but they're still wearing pretty old-school JRPG stuff, it's much less Dragon Ball-esque than what he did for Chrono Trigger.

Edit: Granted, DQ is not above occasionally doing stupid shit like putting Female Warriors in plate armor bikinis in DQ3, or having unlockable fetishy alternate costumes, but I feel like it's telling that it took me an hour or so to even remember that, compared to most modern RPGs.

The most exciting stuff about Wildlands is the Predator and Splinter Cell stuff. Basically everything that has nothing to do with the game itself.

Are the Dragon Quest games standalone, or are they heavily linked to one another? Could you jump in to the series when XI launches without having played any of the previous ones?

I remember seeing footage of one of them running on the PS2 years back, and I liked the art style. I'm currently watching the "The Journey Begins" video for XI and it looks pretty great so far.

Look at the opening cutscene for ff12, its straight cinematic

Sunny day for the wedding, sunset for bad news and deployment

Night for all the terrible things.

There are also other viera in the intro wearing more clothing. Heck, even one viera is royal guard to the princess in full armor.

Vaan, Fraan, background general all come from a special design perspective that comes with big teams.

I honestly liked hearing Fraan talk and at the time, being the last console ff I would ever play, felt leaps and bound better than Barrett in terms of brown skinned people in gaming (never played 10).

Just....her design......Heck, her intro scene has me wondering about bugs flying into her clevage. Actually, that's a lot of anime

DQ 1-3 are set in the same world at different time periods. DQ4-6 are also apparently linked, but I'm, not sure to what extent (I just finished DQ4). As far as I know, the others are all standalone.

I-III are interconnected, but all stand alone pretty well (different generations of a family). I vaguely seem to recall that IV-VI are in the same world, but all independent of one another (I haven't played any of them). Since then they've pretty much gone the Final Fantasy route where a lot of ideas are recycled or reinterpreted from game to game, but they're separate universes.

Tonally it tends to feel more akin to The Hobbit or The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (that is; fairy-tale influenced & kid friendly without being dumbed-down) than series like Final Fantasy which are going for a more "epic" sensibility akin to Tolkien's later works.

I also would say that with the Toriyama style and the way the games flow, they both feel commonly more like old school JRPGs and have a bit more of an anime feel to them. VIII in particular had the ability for characters to go straight up Super Saiyan in everything other than name (you would increase "tension" by using the "Psych Up" option, and doing so multiple times would make you fairly uber powerful; this was carried through to Dragon Quest IX).

So basically, if you enjoy that feeling of wandering a town, inspecting cupboards and barrels, unlocking doors with secret keys, and generally doing very NES JRPG things but in the newer and prettier graphics and options that games now have, I heartily suggest Dragon Quest games.

Also, by god but I think XI is finally going to get rid of random battles in favor of on-map enemy encounters. It's one of the few holdovers from those original games that I'm just not much of a fan of anymore.

I need to get the Halloween DLC Pack too because Laurie Strode teaches you Decisive Strike.

I very rarely play the Killers yet - I'm not a big fan of many of the non-licensed ones - but I have just recently started doing the dailies. So maybe I'll play them some more to knock those out.
