Luckily, very few. Those bitches wanted our shit bad.

Placing an ad in the Best Buy circular did cost us a few extra souls, though.

I really like Survivalists for a number of reasons:

    - Can mine, chop wood and forage

    -.

That's a huge skill point drain tho. It's probably better to divide the Forage skills between several characters instead. A lot of people are doing the small band of Survivalists just for Foraging but that's gets harder to use the lower they have to go.

Does the protector ever get a passive skill that draws the fire of enemies? provoke doesn't seem to be working well and i hate using it instead of attacking.
You actually only need to provoke once, and then it takes effect for the rest of the battle. It's like a self-buff. It's not very reliable, but at level 5 it does make a noticeable difference. (Apparently leveling it past 5 only improves the defense boost and the casting speed, so there's no real point.)

Has anyone figured out how to get a toxic barb yet? (It's needed for one of the "fashion designer" quests.) The Japanese wiki says you can get them by killing an Assassin with Petrify, but I did that, and just got the normal drop...

I really like Survivalists for a number of reasons:

    - Can fight in the back lines without using TP (like Elementalists)

    - Can mine, chop wood and forage

    - Can use helpful skills like Quicken

    - Can cause damage with the best of them

At level 4, my Survivalist was doing almost as much damage as my level 6 Protector. I know Protectors aren't for dealing large amount of damage, but still I was impressed.

Was your Protector using a shortsword? It's a fairly massive upgrade, and I haven't yet found something similar for bows.

You people got me all worried about the Rapelope for nothing. It merely confuses a party member and can one-shot anyone; that's nothing I can't handle simply by doubling my party's levels.

So I got the bright idea to send my Ronin in solo to get some experience to catch up to the rest of the party. I also was stupid and neglected to pick up some potions beforehand and had to burn some of my 200 hp potions when she bumped into packs of Sloth + 2 gels.

At least that was enough to get her to a healing spring she is now basically camping in front of while whacking petaloids, gels, and bugs.

So I decided to scrap my old party completely and start out fresh. Well, not entirely fresh - I didn't restart the game so I still had all my money, equipment, and map data to help out. My new party (complete with in-depth descriptions since it's possible to build 2 characters of the same class in drastically different ways):

Gourry - A defender who is all about the tanking. This time around, I'm completely ignoring healing magic for him and focusing entirely on skills that increase his tanking ability to keep himself and the rest of my party alive.

Naga - A dark hunter. I'm focusing on the whip binding skills. I figure with her speed & bind skills, she'll prove invaluable for quickly dealing with troublesome enemies before they deal major damage. I'm hoping that high level bind skills have decent success rates on FOEs.

Amelia - A medic. Unlike my first medic, she's designed for front row duty. I plan on splitting her skill points fairly evenly between healing spells & skills designed to make her a better warrior (Caduceus, here I come!).

Xellos - A troubador. I'm going for the high level songs ASAP. I'm putting all of his points at the moment into unlocking the TP restoring song. I figure, that'll give him a nice job as the character that allows the rest of my party to use all their nifty skills and allow me to ignore the TP Up passive skill for everybody aside from the Troubador. Oh and after I master the TP song, I'll get the HP song, and other useful buffs.

Lina - An alchemist. I'm splitting her skill points fairly evenly between the poison and the fire lines. Nothing too fancy, other than the fact that I love poison so I'll probably get both poison spells.

As for item gathering skills, I'm ignoring those for the moment since I have all the money I need for the moment. I figure I'll go ahead and put a point in those skills once every 10 levels or so.

The best thing is when you're higher level and walking through the first floor and a single mole pops up. It has that menacing pose but it's all alone and about to get fucked - so it makes me laugh.

So here's what I get for starting this game for the first time right after watching 24. My starting party consists of:

    Jack: Landschnekt. Killing machine.
Doyle: Protector. Not as powerful, but he hangs back and gets the job done.
    Nadia: Dark Huntress. Whip skills.
Chloe: Alchemist, specializing in Volt spells.
Morris: Medic (I know, but I forget the doctor's name, and he and Chloe hang around in the back line)

I'm going to whip up some redshirt Survivalists named ChopChop and DigDig to get my menial money-making machinations going.

So I restarted my party last night.

    Sir Mike - Protector - high def/hp.
Suadeo - Landswhatever - Atk Up/Axe (Killing machine)
Kiceone - The Bard class (Really thinking about grabbing a DH and getting rid of him. He seems so useless)
Miliwen - Medic - Patch Up (To 5) and now going for cure's
    Valseki - Alchemist - Volt up/Tier 2 spell

They are all level 5 finally, I went to the 2nd floor and my damn bard got poisoned. He has around 30hp. Poison ticked for 25 and I D:

    two things:
You should really show Radha's letter in the shop so that you can buy Warp Wires. Just do "talk" in the shop.
There's a warp on level 6 that takes you back to town, and thereafter, you can enter the labyrinth on level 6.

Does anyone know the lyrics to the FOE song? They must be priceless.

All I can figure out is her saying something about them being out of TP.

Oh man, I just had an epic 75-turn battle in the "ant room" on B12F. I had a boosted TP recovery song going, so my medic never ran out of mana...they couldn't kill me, but I couldn't put out enough damage to fight off the reinforcements either. When it was all over, everyone in my party got ~4300 exp.

    Saw this over on SA.

    The Encounter with an F.O.E.
Walking straight ahead I meet an FOE.
There’s a fuzzy orange thing here, it’s an FOE.
OMG, it’s noticed us! It’s an FOE!
We’re out of TP and it’s an FOE!
We’re in the middle of fighting a boss and there’s an FOE! (Get lost!)
OMG, my paladin’s dead! It’s an FOE!

“What is going on here?! My party got wiped because of an FOE!”

The numbers are increasing, these FOEs.
I made a mistake navigating, there’s an FOE.
    They’re reviving, those FOEs!
I forgot to buy some Warp Strings, there’s an FOE!

    FOE! FOE! FOE! FOE…!

There’s a horn sticking out, it’s an FOE.
Ouch, that curse really hurts, it’s an FOE.
I open a door and there’s an FOE!
Every 3 days I meet an FOE!
“Onii-chan! Get away, that’s an FOE!”
Big bro and I are going to go body building!

“Well, isn’t this FOE in high spirits.”

    Saitama, Saitama, FOE.
“Eirin, Eirin” FOE! (Eirin means forest management).
Dossun Dossun FOE. (Hitting the voodoo doll.)
    Doman, seman FOE. (Exorcising.)

“Hahahaha! I’ve added another monster to my encounter list!”
“And it’s none other than an FOE."

So I finally worked up the courage to face B3F. I ran past the two FOEs and finally made it to the door. Went back to town, and ran back. Made it to B4F, killed all the wolves (ton of exp! I loved it!)... And made it to B5F. All my guys are around lvl 18ish.

But as soon as I was messing around on B5F, it was 1:45am; And I work at 8am. So I went to use my Warp Vine, only to find out I forgot to buy another one. UGH, so after a 25 minute run back (with one stop against the FOE, which I promptly whomped.... It was the Stalker) I made it to town, sold everything (at 3,500 en now!) and went to bed. This game is so great!

Just started, so far this game is totally rad. It kind of reminds me of the beginning of Dragon Quest VIII, the one shining moment where the game is actually sorta hard.

So... what's the point of marking treasures and things if you've already opened them? Does the scenery ever change?

Or you could mark it if you don't have enough inventory space. So you can pick it up later.

Oooh limited inventory space. I should probably just rtfm but right from the start it's like, ok, I found a boot with some rocks in a dead end, got violated by moles, what should I mark the space as? Treasure, item, monster? be lazy & none of the above since I cleaned it out? I'll get into it as I play more I'm sure...

Well, kind of funny it never changes but at least I like the scenery. Simple but really pretty game.

I'm still in basement 1 or whatever, have to work, played maybe an hour or two. Went back to town a lot. It's fucking great.

After a few letdowns and 'good but not great' titles Atlus USA is picking up steam between this, Odin Sphere (which I'm fucking assuming will be good *shakes fist*) and the imminent Persona 3... cool. Hope they get enough bucks their way to keep the tap flowing...

With a level 10 Cuff skill, I usually will have bound an FOE's arms by the 3rd round of attacking. Only thing is you don't always know what to bind and getting multiple bind skills to a reliable level will take a while.

I just went for the throat in that fight. I figured there was only enough room on screen for 3 reinforcements to add, though it meant I came close to death many times (especially my underleveled Ronin) and I'm pretty sure I had to revive at least one person in battle.

Finally got a Ronin up to speed with the rest of the party last night and she is indeed a rapetrain when the TP is flowing. Which isn't as long as I'd like. The best damage skill I have on her is a triple slash on one target but it costs 12 TP.

You can divide the three up between different characters tho. The Hexer has all the ones the Dark Hunter has and I think the Survivalist and Protector each have one.

A nice touch is that the shaded leaves that fade the dungeon screen out also change depending on the environment. I get frond shadows on level 11-15.

I traded my dark hunter in for a landsknecht when she hit level 30 (the earliest you can retire for a bonus) and my survivalist in for another survivalist who I've designed a bit differently. They're now both around level 24 and thanks to more careful skill choices they are already outperforming the characters they replaced who were, of course, both at level 30.

The retirement bonus seems to be an extra point for a stat based on the character you retired (agility for survivalist, attack for dark hunter) and 2 extra skill points to distribute at level one. I assume this scales up as the retiree gains levels so it may eventually be worth it to replace a whole party by retiring it at the highest level if you are some kind of insane perfectionist and want all the bonus skill points and a stat bonus for everyone in your party.

My new survivalist strategy was to get multihit to level 10 as soon as possible. I had just discovered it's utility with my previous survivalist but since he had a lot of wasted points I decided to start again with the skill bonus when the old one hit 30. Multihit slaughers FOEs with three high powered arrows at level 10 and I'm loving it. Its only problem is that you can't aim the 3 shots so if there are two or more enemies, you can't preferentially pump arrows into the toughest one while leaving the weaklings for someone else to smack. Also, I think it decides where to fire the arrows in advance and if it kills on the first or second hit, and was planning to put the next arrow into that same target that is now gone, the attack ends without firing the remaining arrow(s).

Apollon gets a stun bonus at level 5 (it's level 4 for me now but the "next" discription says as much) and it already does more damage than my total multihit when it comes down. The way it works, for anyone who wants to know, is that it fires on one turn, does nothing the next turn, and then hits hard on the third turn. You can do anything you want in the turn after firing it (except apollon again) so this is a good time to use multihit. My survivalist is now my chief executive in charge of FOE killing with these skills and once I get apollon maxed I'm pumping ambush like crazy for more preemptive strikes (just one point in it is noticible, even against FOEs).

My landsknecht is not quite as awe inspiring, but he hits hard enough with a good axe. Double hit, which I put up to level 10 as my first priority, doesn't kick in as often as I'd like and it was a lot of points to spend (5 in axe, 5 in swords). Still, it's nice when it works. Stunner is very nice and seems to affect FOEs just fine (better than bindings anyway), effectively making the target useless for a turn when it stuns, and still hitting hard enough even when it doesn't. Once I max stunner and pump up attack and axes to 10, I feel like he'll be really destructive.

Smite is completely worth the 5 points I had to waste in fortify to get it for the protector. Even at level 1 it hits really hard and I think it gets an arm binding bonus when it hits level 5. Smite and Defender (big defense bonus for the whole party) are the only protector skills I really want to get up to level 10 at the moment; too bad they needed a combined total of over 20 points in prerequisites to get (10 in shields, 3 in defense, 3 in front guard, 3 in back guard, 5 in fortify). With the exception of fortify, you pretty much want all of those anyway, but still, it's a lot of points to spend.

Am I missing soemthing? It's been about 10 years since I played a Wizardry game, so I'm a bit rusty in this whole "fuck you right up the ass" style first person RPG.
