Calamity Jane gets drunk and swears again (Deadwood thread)

I just started watching season 1 of Deadwood on DVD and so far it's a fine show.

Calamity Jane seems like a tough, crusty broad but behind that facade hides a frightened little girl.


And whatever you do, don't fuck with Swearengen or he'll have your liver out himself. But if there's profit to be made and he gets a big enough slice of the pie, he'll probably even buy your first drink. Just make sure you're worth more to him alive than dead and you'll be ok.


We can't overlook Seth Bullock, one of the few honest men in this shithole. As an honest man, he has an intense dislike of Swearengen and the feeling is mutual. But they're both practical men and in spite of their feelings, they usually manage to work with each other albeit warily.


And who can forget Mr. Wu? Whether you need your laundry washed, bodies disposed of, or opium to make life seem less shitty for a while, he's your man.

Yes sam, you should. It's an HBO series so there's copious swearing and violence. It's pretty cool.

Swearengen is a shifty fucker but I can't help respect him for being so good at what he does.

The articulation in combination with the cursing is a little too much for me sometimes, especially when Swearengen's lackeys fuck up and he flips out on them. I cannot stop laughing.

I love how Swearengen just let's 'em stew and they stammer and offer to make things right, then he acts like it's ok he understands, then he knifes 'em in the gut or shoots them and sends the corpse to Mr. Wu. If I lived in Deadwood I sure as hell wouldn't eat the pork.

Season 1 was epic, Season 2 was not as good, Season 3 was better than 2, but still not as good as 1.

That said, the show is fucking brilliant, and everyone in it does an outstanding job. Ian McShane and Major Dad in particular.

I read a screenplay for "Dead in the West" a few years back and I got to thinking...did that shit ever get the whole movie treatment? The aesthetic feel of Deadwood would be all over it were it ever made into one.

Deadwood is so good but do not start it if you can't be satisfied by a show that has no ending. I mean, they didn't cancel it in the middle of the season but after the third season, there are some bits you really really want to see tied up. There have been rumblings about some Deadwood tv movie things that might film later this year but nothing final. If they do go through with them I will be rock hard for the remainder of the year.

I absolutely agree. I hear she kicks the laudanum later in season 1 but the detached expression she usually wears really works for her.

Man oh man. If you haven't finished Season 1, I won't go into too much detail. But her character gets pretty interesting, even without the laudanum.

Season 3 wasn't bad, but fuck all if it wasn't depressing... and that's the way the series ended too (though there's still mutterings about two movies in the pipe).

So basically it might get the Firefly treatment? Still, I don't have a problem with a series that looks promising ending after two or three seasons if the quality is declining. Sometimes the writers just can't sustain the quality and it's better to accept that than drag a series that started strong into 5 or 6 crappy seasons.

This isn't HBO's fault. They offered several outs for the creator, but he ultimately decided he'd rather do a new series for them than continue with Deadwood.

Also, this new series looks to be about some young surfer guy.
