Kratos seems to feel like his time is limited. After Baldur dies he even says they should go scatter the ashes, "While I still have strength" or something like that. And he's got a few other lines like that too.
A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.

Well he did fight Baldur three times. And Magni. And Modi. And Helsson. And the Dark Elf commander. And a dragon. And nine Valkyries. And... etc.
Dad probably needs his nap.

Finished the main story
The giants being dead hit me hard. Soon as Atreus said “I don't hear any voices” I got a bad feeling, and then once we got up to the summit I was like is that a hand?
Anyway, I’ve still got a bunch of stuff to do, not really looking forward to tracking down all the ravens but the rest of it seems fun.
“I was quick when I came in here, I’m twice as quick now”
-Indiana Solo, runner of blades
So what killed all the giants? It didn't look like they went peacefully. I'd say Thor, but he couldn't get to them there, could he?
As for the last mural, it looks like Kratos is dead, and what's coming out of Lokis mouth might be the World Serpent? I think Jörmungandr's his child in the mythology, so with the time-travel stuff that Mimir was talking about, that would track. Maybe Jörmungandr kills Kratos?
But there's a large chunk missing from the wall, and that'd be about the right spot for Loki and Kratos to be fighting each other. We are on a 'sons killing fathers' theme with this family, after all.
And post-ending question about early game:
The massive rock that Kratos drops on Baldur in their first fight had some kind of mural on it, is it possible to get a decent look at it anywhere? From the colours I'd say it was the same style as the giants murals, so it might have been made by Fey (in which case it was probably a prophecy of some kind).
Beat the story tonight. Two things for those who have beaten the story and don't mind Norse mythology spoilers:
In the giants' room, when the walls reveal themselves and right before the protags scatter the ashes, what is the image that Kratos sees under that red sheet? Atreus says something like, "Oh, we're so close to the end!" and then Kratos sees one figure holding another, something like that, and responds with something like, "We sure are." I couldn't quite tell at the time what I was seeing. Who's holding whom there?

Oh, and yeah, I didn't realize that Thor and Loki aren't actually brothers in the mythology and that that's only a Marvel thing. Kinda wish I'd known that going in, because when the Atreus/Loki reveal happened, I was baffled by the age difference. Silly me.
Well that's interesting. I didn't notice they were both spewing out snakes, or is it going from Atreus to Kratos? Also is it just chipped rock, or has Kratos' head asploded? I suddenly feel like my dumb "Kratos becomes Jormungandr" theory has some weight to it.
Edit:
ORRRRR maybe it's going from Kratos head into Atreus??

Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
What im seeing in this game is a mixture of what i would expect to see, and what goes against the grain.
Kratos has apparently been in these lands for over a hundred years. We can safely assume the great flood caused by the death of zeus to be the thing that caused the great cataclysm mentioned several times. What I think we are seeing is that prophecies about Ragnarok and other panthions are being disrupted by this event. Disrupted because of Kratos and his killing of a god(singular or many, the entire idea goes against everything everyone believed and based prophecy on).
The simple fact that Modi and Moghi are now dead already breaks prophecy. They were suppose to take up Thors hammer after he and the serpent kill each other.
I'd like to point out something else that may have been lost in the moment. Remember when Kratos goes back home in the boat how weird everything is with the weather? the sky turns redish purple, and it appears to be raining ash...all while Loki is in a state that could be called 'dying'. The first time i saw this, It was easy to say it was simply done to heighten the drama of the moment...but now I think its something else. We have theories going around that Loki travels back in time to this point at the same time this is happening to talk to the serpent (That his older self was who called the serpent at that time). You could say the weather effects and sky changing color could be either a side effect of a possible time paradox breaking (If Loki actually died at that time, he would be breaking events already set in motion by his older self). Since he did not die, the paradox never occured, time loop is secure, everythings back to normal. Or it could just be the result of two Loki's existing at the same point in time together messing up casuality. It actually kinda makes sense that older loki could ONLY return through time while his other self was on the brink of death...that is, there werent technically two of them at the same time since one of them was so barely alive.
I think the series of games is going to ultimately be about breaking the cycle of Ragnarok. We have seen too many things happening out of order. Thor and the Serpent should not have already started having battles with each other.
The giants are another serious mystery. The entire game we are led to believe that the giants are sealed away from Odin, safe until he finds a way into the realm. But they already are dead? Someone said it seemed they went peacefully, but I'm not so sure about that.

I don't know enough about mythology to comment on most of that, but my read of the game is that Thor and the Serpent haven't battled each other yet.
Mimir said they're prophecised to fight in the future, and the battle breaks the world tree so the Serpent is sent back in time.
So the Serpent has fought Thor and hates him, Thor know's he's going to fight the serpent and hates him, but I didn't see anything that said they've already fought from this times perspective.
And I'd question the giants going peacefully, too. At least one looked like its head had been smashed into a mountain. It could have been suicide, but not a peaceful one.
I dont think that's Jormumgandr coming out of his mouth, it's runes, suggesting some kind of spell maybe. Apparently there's a mobile game that hints at Atreus having some untapped magical abilities

@KoopahTroopah You know the folks who developed Celeste, right?
There's this "from the creators" thing on PSN where developers offer a list of games they really enjoy, and one for Cory Barlog popped up recently. The first game he lists is Celeste, and has a few really positive paragraphs written about it in which he refers to the game as brilliant.
In case they didn't already, maybe your friends might want to know that the creative director behind one of the best games ever made thinks their game is brilliant

Just beat the game, haven't done all the side stuff but absolutely loved it. I would happily gobble up 5 sequels or at the very least some DLC expansions. Moar!
Random far-fetched speculation based off an assumption and the norse mythology thing
I hadn't considered the fact that a *very* long time may have passed between GOW3 and this game. If Kratos = Jormungand, then Thor and Kratos will battle to a stalemate in the next game. Maybe he gets sent back in time in the form of the serpent, and the reason nobody speaks his language now is because Kratos in serpent form speaks his original, now-dead language.
Going back to the house was a cool moment - if you haven't done that yet, you should - but
It's a little silly that they decided to use "A Few Years Later" as a transition card and then have the characters in the same armor and whatnot, and then also say that it was some kind of shared dream, and then wave it away. I feel like it should have either been strictly a dream, i.e. not seem to pick up mere moments later with an arbitrary time card, or should have had better context/framing, or something. It just seemed really shoehorned in. Is the next game going to start with another fight at the house? Are we going to pretend Thor's appearance was just a dream rather than a prophecy of an event to come? Would it have been that much more work to choreograph and show a scene that has Kratos and Atreus wearing the simpler clothes they wore in the beginning of the game, maybe working outside or something, to at least suggest the actual passage of time? I'm nit picking, but that whole moment was very throwaway to me.

Maybe they slept for years
HAHA this is canon now in my mind, thank you. They certainly made a big deal about it.
Post-game story spoilers (seriously) and a dad joke (seriously):
The axe is super awesome, but I wish Kratos had eventually discovered a hammer and that it had been revealed that HE was the God of Thunder, to go along with Atreus being Loki. Then when he was telling Atreus about his sordid past, sexing up harpies and whatever in Olympus, he could have started the tale with, "Thor scored in heaven, years ago." Say it out loud. I'll wait.
Y'know, like Lincoln. Four score and seven years ago?
And we could all refer to that story beat, the big reveal, as... Ready for it?

Wait, Atreus says directly that it was a dream. And then says that it felt like more, like a vision of the future. I'm not sure what you are saying here at all. It basically directly said that the scene was a dream that Atreus had, but that the dream was a vision of the future in dream form.

Is the Valkyrie at Niflheim the easiest one? I accidentally stumbled onto her during a run at about 50% mist bar. Not only did I crush her on the first try, but I think I had more mist bar after the fight than before. This has not been my experience with the others.
I finally completed the main quest. What a tremendous game. I am going to wrap up the side stuff, but it’ll be a long wait till whatever is next. Also: that has got to be one of the longest credit rolls in media. It felt like it would never end!

I think I just didn't like that
they felt the need to contextualize it with a title card ("Several Years Later" or whatever) but didn't dedicate any real assets to it. Like, they lie down and then it's supposedly years later, but they're wearing the same uncomfortable looking armor, and then it's revealed to be a dream. It just seemed like it should have been framed as a few hours at most (before Atreus reveals that it was a dream). And I also kinda assumed that the "oh, that was a dream, but also a vision" thing was just a way to allow the player to get back to endgame, and it felt cheap to me. Like... "This didn't just happen, but it's going to happen, but not anytime soon." I don't know if that means that the sequel is going to feature that moment directly, or if it's going to be like it never happened, or what. We'll have to see.

I dunno about your theory. Loki is the father of some of the most famous Norse monsters, including the Midgar Serpent. The game was very careful to tip-toe around basically anything that involves Loki. No Hel (goddess), no Fenrir, and the exclusion of the whole "Loki fucks over Fafnir so hard with a magic ring that he murders his family and becomes a dragon" bit from the Fafnir backstory. And the Midgar-Serpent comes from the future-past. But the mural's snakes do kinda look like an ouroboros which is kinda the Midgar Serpent's whole dealio.
What I think the mural is referencing how the "Loki" personality kinda emerged whole cloth from Atreus after he started embracing his godhood.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
You can bet there's going to be at least one sequel.
God of War apparently sold 3 million copies in its first 3 days.
I would definitely like some DLC. There’s two places we don’t go and I’d like to see one of them at least.
Three.
Asgard
Vanaheim
Svartalfheim
As much as I would like to see them, I know the game director has said that there are no original intentions to do DLC.
I'd rather save them for the sequel where they can get the full art direction and attention they deserve. I wouldn't want them to potentially rush it through and risk the environments not holding up to expectations.

They haven't started any DLC yet, so I'd rather they just work on the next one. Hopefully this series won't be an issue where we get 1 installment every 3 years.

A lot of sources use Freya and Frigg interchangeably. It's not that uncommon to just make them the same entity.
There is a bit of dialogue when fast traveling where Mimir mentions that Freya and Frigg are the same person. When Atreus press him for why he says that Odin did that so that Freya’s greatest deeds would not be attributed to a “non-Asgardian”. They specifically mention being Baldur’s mother as an example.
Oh yeah and this game made me grab Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology. I have no idea what they've spun or changed for the game, but they did such a good job of making it all fascinating that I want to learn more about the real thing.
Lol I beat this last night and did the exact same thing

As for the last mural, it looks like Kratos is dead, and what's coming out of Lokis mouth might be the World Serpent? I think Jörmungandr's his child in the mythology, so with the time-travel stuff that Mimir was talking about, that would track. Maybe Jörmungandr kills Kratos?
But there's a large chunk missing from the wall, and that'd be about the right spot for Loki and Kratos to be fighting each other. We are on a 'sons killing fathers' theme with this family, after all.
And post-ending question about early game:
Edit:
Kratos has apparently been in these lands for over a hundred years. We can safely assume the great flood caused by the death of zeus to be the thing that caused the great cataclysm mentioned several times. What I think we are seeing is that prophecies about Ragnarok and other panthions are being disrupted by this event. I'd like to point out something else that may have been lost in the moment. Remember when Kratos goes back home in the boat how weird everything is with the weather? the sky turns redish purple, and it appears to be raining ash...all while Loki is in a state that could be called 'dying'.

I think it was pretty early in the game when they are asking the witch, or maybe Mimir why the serpent was in the lake and they mention that Thor and the serpent fought to a stalemate.
Yeah, I couldn't figure this out, the first question.
I was like, why am I being tagged in a thread I haven't opened in 300 posts... lol. Thanks for this! I'll forward it along to Matt and Greg.
God of War apparently sold 3 million copies in its first 3 days.

HAHA this is canon now in my mind, thank you. They certainly made a big deal about it.

I go "I don't need no water" every time I
I finally completed the main quest. What a tremendous game. I am going to wrap up the side stuff, but it’ll be a long wait till whatever is next. Also: that has got to be one of the longest credit rolls in media. It felt like it would never end!

I think I just didn't like that
Not really?
What I think the mural is referencing how the "Loki" personality kinda emerged whole cloth from Atreus after he started embracing his godhood.
yeah but there aren't that many cool pantheons to murder left. Or that many that won't cause immediate racism backlash.
I like it enough but the camera in combat is absolutely insane and really tanking my enjoyment of every fight. Maybe I’ll get used to it but oooof.
I would definitely like some DLC. There’s two places we don’t go and I’d like to see one of them at least.

Three.

Lol I beat this last night and did the exact same thing
