[BATTLETECH/MechWarrior] Old thread, like the carcass of a cored-out Locust.
They came up with an entirely new Periphery state for this, so I’m not too concerned we’ll be running into too many established Successor State characters.
He played a couple of the old Mechwarriors back in the day so knows an LRM from a PPC but had never really engaged with the story or lore. He mentioned several times in his stream how he was surprised by how lore-rich HBS BT is and how much he is enjoying sinking his teeth into it.
I'm not surprised. Being around for so long, BT has tons of lore built up to use and its all great. I'm hoping they don't do more than reference the big names of some characters and build up all new heroes and villains in this. What with the potential for dlc to expand this game out, there's sooooo much they could write about. I can't wait to start finding out whose backstabbing me and what factions need some blunt force trauma to set them straight.
I wouldn't be too worried. Tyler Carpenter is HBS's writer and he wrote the first couple DFA seasons which were very self contained, rich stories while still being Battletechy as fuck. He absolutely knows his shit. Not to mention that we've got our lord and savior Jordan Weisman directly at the helm for this and Mitch Gitelman worked with Jordan on the Mechcommander games. We're in very good hands.
HBS does good shit in general. Their shadowrun games were pretty damn awesome.

Well we did hit the stretch goal in the kickstarter to include Legendary Mechs and Mechwarriors (which they did say that they're still working on including later). But yeah, it won't be something to worry about.
I usually always go and try to check all of the "heat gen" nodes on the first one, and all of the heat ones on the other tree (can't remember the name of it off the top of my head) avoiding the speed tweak ones as much as possible. I then scatter the rest to taste: ballistics jam chance/ammo/laser, armor, and speed.
If I have time today I'll go and take screencaps of the two trees and the "normal" pattern I start out with.
That'd be great, thanks!
I put two UAC10 and an ERPPC in my Sunspider Seems good.
Uploaded photos for you.
First two are my "vanilla" sets that I start out with.

I watched the entirety of Beagle's stream thinking that I was only going to see a little and then stop in order to not get spoiled but I couldn't stop because holy fuck does this game look rad.
Just need to wrap my head around the subtle tweaks they've done since the SP demo and now as well as differences between TT and this.

Yeah it is a mess and man did the mechs no longer feel like they were prior to the new skill trees. But I felt that the mechs felt like lumbering massive beasts now. Also you didn't have to skill out three mechs just to fully skill out the one you wanted. Also it slightly leveled the playing field for newbies I felt.
But other than that, it really is a pain to use and lights really don't feel like the super fast balls of doom anymore. Thus my posting of those photos to help others figure out the first two things you really want to do to make sure that you can fire more than the non-skilled mechs (or just be able to keep up with the skilled mechs).
Betsuni Thanks! Do you not recommend Radar Deprivation or Seismic Sensors by default?
I know this was directed at Bets...but more perspectives are good too, right?
From my experience:
Seismic Sensors are mostly going to be useful for brawling and/or ambusher builds. The range on the things got nerfed hardcore, and they now only report seismic results when you're standing still. Now, with that all said, I can kind of see them being somewhat useful if you plan on running stealth armor shenanigans.
Radar Deprivation can be entirely skipped if you have ECM or intend on being in full view of baddies and aren't interested in ducking in and out of cover. Personally, I run 60% (3 nodes) on everything not equipped with ECM.
Erlkönig on

I tend to only go for those if I'm dedicating myself to scouting. But otherwise I stick the rest into some armor buffs and acceleration tweaks / torso speed (after the weapon buffs of course).
In MWO I got a complimentary free mech, dunno what for. It's a Uziel, but its armament is... bad. It has an LB-X AC/5 and two snub-nose PPCs. That's it.
It's to "celebrate" the launch of the Solaris 7 mode. Log in anytime before May 1st, and you'll get it (injected to your account on the hour after you log in).
I've been thinking of swapping out the weapons to an LB5X+LB2X backed with medium lasers. It gives you a deadside, crit-seeking, and backup weapons for when you run out of ammo....but yeah, it's still pretty bad.
I bought a second LB5X and another pack of ammo, stripping out the PPCs. One of the arms was also only at half its armor capacity and seeing as I had a weapon on it now (it didn't before) it felt prudent to fix that. Also replaced those PPCs with a couple medium lasers. Overall it does better than it used to, but it's still... oof. Not my favorite mech.
Does anybody know if non-backer pre-order keys have gone out yet?
not all of the backers have received their preorder keys yet.. they have a bit of a log to work through. (the preorder key is different than the closed beta key, and the closed beta will NOT update to the full game)
In the Backer Update they said that the GOG keys won't have a pre-load option, I believe
Yep, GoG keys won't have a preload ability. So we'll have to download the game at launch time like savages.
Ugh! That makes me seriously consider buying a 2nd copy on Steam so I can preload. Already taking Tuesday amd Wednesday off work. Can’t lose any playtime!

Maybe the game wont be super huge.
Probably be faster to download than it would be to decrypt the preload.

Oh God, I remember GTAV.
Preloaded it to my SSD. Then release day came it required me to have double the required space to install. My SSD was not that big back then so I uninstalled the preload and just downloaded the game. Hilariously I was able to do all that before my buddies had decrypted their preloads (we started at the same time).
So now I don't bother with preloads.
A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
Plan is when this drops to maybe play a skirmish match, then do character creation and maybe the first bit of stuff before work. Wednesday won't be doing anything with it, then Thursday and Friday it'll be Battletech all the way baby!
Folks should definitely post builds that they're having luck with as they go

The xcom 2 preload took for fucking EVER to decrypt!

I remember decrypting HL2 when it released (because physical media installed a freaking encryped version)
it literally took an entire day.
Clearly as my reference is so recent, you can tell what path I've taken re: decrypt vs download.
Watching Beagle play has me chomping at the bit for Battletech of any kind, so I booted up MWO for the first time in forever.

So, uh, those RAC/5s sure are something, aren't they?
Dual RAC5s with laser backup or pure RAC5s? I love how people tend to ignore a Catapult on the battlefield as well. No idea why, but they just look at amazement when they see one that isn't shooting missiles.
Gog might have no preload, but it also has no drm. Which means slightly better performance, and no one deleting your game from your steam account in case of some lost future legal battles..
I did not realize that when, months ago, I agreed to cat sit for my brother it would be for the same week that Battletech was coming out.
I won’t be able to play until the Monday after it comes out.
Debating lugging my whole desktop down just to play while i’m here...
Isn't a cat and a littertray a lot lighter than a computer?
Alternatively, aren't cats notoriously independent requiring little involvement from a person other than making sure they have food, a clean litter box, and a lap to lay on?
At least from my experience with my cats that seems to hold true.

There were some books referenced a few pages ago... let me see if I can drag them back out. Also you can go read Sarna since they have a good reference and starting point for the universe.

So, it looks like they lowered the minimum system requirements at some point, and now my gpu just barely qualifies. So backing the kickstarter paid off for me after all!

In the same vein, skill trees that are just "+0.x% to Whatsits" is also not very compelling.
Yeah I feel like League of Legends and WoW solved this forever ago. Less nodes with more dramatic, impactful results is always more interesting.

If you are a non-backer and pre-ordered through steam or gog you should already have the game on your account from when you pre-ordered
Third party key sellers like GMG might not have sent their keys out yet, though. Hopefully they will in time to pre-load (for Steam).

It’s two cats, and let’s be real moving and setting up a computer is way less work than herding two cats into crates.
