the yen-lo-wang really does work. it was far and away my MVP from the point where I got it all the way through to when I started getting Assaults

I still bring it along on convoy destruction missions. it can outpace my assaults and delete everything short of a Demolisher in one hit, letting the rest of the lance focus on the escort lance

man replace it with the same build in an orion and bring it on every mission!

Just got my first Orion, first heavy, actually... now what to do with it...

Oni 1V - punched the pilot clean out of the cockpit. *should* have had a thunderbolt too, but the followup MG fire set off all his ammo and left me with one part. Thats 3 times now I should have had a full mech salvage ruined by RNGeezuz exploding my trophy.

    I just blow off legs.

Its easier than playing the pilot knockdown kill game, or trying for headshots.

I ran into a problem I noticed before but didn't think to try to actively solve. I was trying to playstyle change it but it's not working out. The problem is the position of my lasers on my Timber Wolf's chassis. The arms hang much lower than I anticipated really, so for my ERLLs to actually get any use between myself and the target there has to be VERY CLEAR open space in front of me. But that makes me super vulnerable on maps where there's a lot of natural terrain (hills are hard to shoot over). Yes I know about the armlock function and that doesn't change anything.

So my current solution is for my arms' combined 4 energy slots to be medium pulses for the closer encounters, and my torso's energy slot is an ERLL for the moment. This has allowed me to swap my LRM20s back into place instead of the LRM15s I dropped them to, and I can ditch the extra heatsink for now. I might drop the LRMs again in exchange for having an ERPPC on that torso slot. The exchange is less heat efficiency per shot and it's heavier, but once I shoot it that's that, no need to hang out there for 1.35 seconds for the beam to channel.

This is true for most mechs. Torso mounts are for sniping, arm mounts are for close up defense. Though there are a few exceptions to this (like the Catapult K2 or Jaegermech where the arm mounts are reaaally high up)

Yeah, this is the reason that most people switched to the Ebon Jaguar to have the high torso mounts from the Timber Wolf. But I still love the TW over my EJ.

Lets take a 95 ton Mech, take off his armor, make him fast despite being an assault, oh and lets give THREE weapon hardpoints.

The designers took a Panther and upscaled it while leaving its fire power the same.

Nope, you can just buy the pods. The only time you need to buy the other variant is if you want the center torso. If you look in the mechlab you will see omnipods next to equipment (or something like that).

Yeah. You need to downgrade those guns. Noth enough armor, not enough ammo.

+Damage AC/10s would work for head-hunting if you have a Called Shot Mastery pilot (2 shots, each with an 18% chance of ending the fight is pretty good), but otherwise AC/5s is probably your best bet. Augmented by...something.

Considering the general competency of this games light mech pilots there is no reason to combo up long range and short range weaponry. The ML is still king in terms of flexibility, and will overall give you a much better DPS (since the AC/5s run a little too cool to just use on their own).

    I got my first Catapult!

But it's not the missile boat variety.

Oh well. I went so much of the game never seeing them, but I'm running into them a lot more as I traverse the Capellan border closer towards Marik space. I wonder if they actually spawn different mechs for different regions or enemy factions. The tables for that do exist in sourcebooks. In fact, pulling out my Era Report 3052 Random Assignment Tables, Catapults are pretty much exclusively Capellan Confederation and Merc/Periphery. So that might make sense?

The PPC & MG variety. Not sure quite what I want to do with it. I'm tempted to try to do more with PPCs, especially on arctic maps where heat isn't as much an issue. But I'm chronically short on rare PPCs, and it feels weird going stock this late in the game.

So I had not had the unfortunate luck other people had had with shit tons of pilot injuries, I know I shouldn't have expected that to continue, and it did not. It was during a random, 1.5 skull cake-walk mission I was doing to earn some quick cash, a lance on lance battle. First issue, they ended up having a full line of armor on their mechs. They also ended up with a Griffin loaded with fuck you lasers, a hunchback with shit tons of missiles (I think it was a hunchback anyway, something with close range rockets out the wazoo), and a firestarter. A round after engaging, the griffin runs up to my MC pilot in the Blackjack and one shots his head with its fist, immediately dropping him. Same turn, the firestarter comes out of the woods and lights up the Jenner, overheating it and dropping the pilot. This is where I also learned that apparently you can't eject if the mech has shut down, so the new guy I had in the Jenner goes up in flames. This turns into a bloody, long fight with my Centurion and Shadow-Hawk against their mostly full lance (we dropped the hunchback before this all went down). By the end of it, Behemoth went down in the Shadow-Hawk, and Medusa in my Centurion and the enemy in the Griffin were having an MGS4/end of Rocky 4 beatdown with one arm each and no weapons left, slugging each other until my Centurion blew out its leg, dropping it and giving the Griffin pilot his final injury. Get to the end mission screen, and low and behold, Behemoth and the newbie guy survived! I feel bad cause I can't remember his name off the top of my head. And I got a Griffin.

This lead to me striking out to random planets to make money, as my star pilots were all extremely injured and my mechs were down. I ran about two months in the red, barely scratching by, my pilots continually going into the med bay due to lucky hits. The stand out moment for me was Noodle, the irish lady I had hired at the beginning of the game cause I thought her callsign was funny, really came into her own in the Jagermech we had gotten. She lead a whole new group of mech pilots. This became a costly endeavor as I only had 8 slots, and was waiting on the upgrade to double the squad size. I ended up sending her and Medusa, who recovered the quickest, into a lot of 3 person squad missions, before I had enough money and people healthy enough to jump into the next story mission and get our head's above water.

After that story mission, the one where
You have to take out the ammunitions depot guards and destroy the resupply squads, which is a fucking brutal fight of 8 enemies, a shit-ton of turrets, and explosives everywhere
I decided to re-spec my Centurion, removing the single LRM10 I had on him, and swap it for three SRM4s and some ammo for it. The logic I have is that its better cause I like to get up close and personal with the Centurion to punch people, but not sure if the SRM4 are better than the SR2Ms or SRM6s. I think so, going by weight and heat costs, but would like some input on that.

Splatstalkers are funny (I usually ran with 2xLL, 4xSRM6) but ended up being just a little too slow and unwieldy and the game really started moving past them.

Man I am not having a good time trying to find an optimal weapon set for my Timber Wolf. The single ERLL on the torso wasn't making as much of an impact as I would've liked, so I swapped it to a medium pulse, bringing that count to 5. And so of course I can't fire for long because my heat builds up pretty hard in that setup. So I'm back to each arm having an ERLL, and I've downgraded to 3 small pulse lasers as support close fire along with the MGs. And it feels... all the weaker. Plus now I'm back to that problem of the ERLLs being set so low that I have to be extremely mindful of what I'm trying to shoot over, and how high the target is.

I mean, ultimately when I do find a good weapon config it will have all been worth it and this heartache will enhance that feeling. Just... grumpy :P

Did you know you can fit 9 medium pulse lasers on a Timberwolf?

One of the ballistic slots on Timber Wolf Prime is on the center chassis, meaning it is limited to a machine gun of some sort.

You can even fire them once.
I'd rather not, I'm very mindful of the "multiple of a same weapon generates more heat than usual" thing. This is why I didn't jump on the Nova right away, as hilarious as it'd be. Whenever I was bored with Mechwarrior 2 I would alpha strike my way to detonation.

Man I am not having a good time trying to find an optimal weapon set for my Timber Wolf. Hmm...looking into more unorthodox builds (since I know my usual loadout is not for everybody), and I came up with 2xUAC10+4xERSL. I wonder how it'll do...
One of the ballistic slots on Timber Wolf Prime is on the center chassis, meaning it is limited to a machine gun of some sort.

Switch the left torso to the -S variant. You get enough crit slots for an Ultra-10 and also get 2 jump jets.

The jump jets I'll pass on, but y'know...maybe I should swap the torsos out? I really want to provide LRM support (on smart targets, not just firing into an AMS cluster)... but it's not working out like I'd hoped. LRMs feel very weak in this game. Are there ballistic left & right torso omni parts?

So, here's the thing with omnimechs and omnipods:

If an omnipod has jump jets installed, they are fixed equipment and you can't remove them.

And with the Timber Wolf, the only left torso that has a ballistic slot is the one that has a pair jump jets. Otherwise, you can keep your -Prime variant right torso for ballistic shenanigans.

People are still wondering how to build their K2s, even after this post?

It takes advantage of the super buffed AC5 paired with PPC to make the most of single heat sinks, efficient ML backup, and critseeking MG melee finishers for when you eventually need to cool down. Oh, and max armor everywhere except the rear, where you have something like 40/50/40.

Balls, clan tech being fixed in some ways really irks me. OH! On that note I have a question. On the arm omni pods, they have a check box for something about a "lower arm actuator" or something to that extent. What is that for / what does it do?
