Okay, wait... timeout...
We're doing exactly the same thing with Rath EX in FFXIV. 'Cept people are even worse because we're trained on aoe/attack telegraph markers and Rathalos has none.
Also, I'm not hearing enough hunting horn praise from you PC people come on. Or enough about perfecting foresight slash with the long sword. These are my favorite things, even though I've not been able to play MHW in a long while (don't even have my PS4 right now).
So how do I go about playing with fellow PAers on the PC?
I like to face giant monsters on my own, but at the same time, playing with people is nice too. Can contribute a cheerful demeanor and reasonable incompetence.

Hunting horn is the best weapon in the game and every time I play an earplugs song right before the monster roars everyone on my discord is VinceMcMahon.gif
I'd love to have my membership request to PA G&T Adventure Team to be, well, done something with.

+1 for group approval, assuming you haven't just done them all at this point. NFyt.

So, this may have been covered on one of the previous 80 pages, but do squads do anything on the PC version? I know the game uses Steam Groups for Squads, but there doesn't appear to actually be any in-game functionality for them.
Well, you can join the same session, but that has nothing to do with squads. You can't invite by squad, you can't filter by squad, the only functionality it seems to have is "you can see your Steam Group icon by your name".
So far i've blazed all the way through to and killed Tobi on low rank.
Given i'm pretty sure i nearly took an Anjath down with beginner equipment before the jerk timed out on an expediton, i'm doing pretty well. (Also ahahahaha, they un-nerfed reloading the Charge blade's red shield and it is THE BEST. The number of monsters that have gone down to SUPRISE AED TO THE FACE from me is rising rapidly.)
I'm definitely missing adept Dual blades, though i'm not sure styles being gone is the worst thing. (I like the concept, i'm just not convinced the execution worked - some styles like Adept DB were just so stupidly strong, it was more than a little silly. And i hear Bushido gets even nuttier. I think it's something i'd like to see return, but wit ha lot more refinement to it and the Hunter Arts)
Pick me! Can I get on the cool approval list too? I applied a few days ago, and would greatly appreciate it!

PSA for PC folks: Go to the steam store page for the game, scroll down to DLC and grab the three free DLCs (two hairstyles and an emote if memory serves).
When you do click on one to download it'll launch the game and then download it before the Start menu appears. However when you're in the game you can just click to download them from the steam page, then go to your home, talk to the housekeeper and check for DLC.
Just in case people were unaware about it, like myself.
Axen on
A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
Man I'm loving this game but I feel like there's so much left unexplained for newbies.
Do you pro players stick to one weapon type or do you switch it up based on what you're fighting? So far I've only ever really spent much time with the Axe-Sword thing and the Glaive.
Also do the low level monster skins/equipment ever become useful again later on?

I usually focus on one melee amd one ranged weapon (some monsters are much easier with range) until HR then start branching out for variety.
No, low level armor is not very useful in HR. Low pevel mats you'll still use to make new HR weapons since you mostly have to start from LR ones.

You can totally run just one weapon if that is your thing. That said, it wouldn't be the worst idea to maybe get good with one weapon from each damage type (Cut, blunt, pierce) if you're more of a solo hunter. In simplest terms, different damage types can net you different materials. If you primarily play in groups then that isn't as important.
Low level materials/equipment is kind of useful. Later tiers of weapons may require you to say; get a bone weapon, upgrade it to a new tree, upgrade that to a new tree, and upgrade that to a NEW tree. So they're not nearly completely useless.

There are expert players who specialize in a single weapon and learn every single fight with that weapon. There are expert players who use all of the weapons and change it up based on the fight. Both strategies are viable.
Practically speaking, it's a good idea to have at least one bread-and-butter melee weapon and one bread-and-butter ranged weapon that you like, as most of the spectrum of "difficult for X weapon but easy for Y weapon" exists along that axis. For example, against Teostra, your arrows will bounce off of him when he has his flame armor up, so some people switch it up to a melee weapon with Dragon damage (to shut off his aura) in that fight.
Some of the rare Low Rank stuff is used in High Rank equipment, but those rare parts are usually more common drops at High Rank anyway. You will still need the Low Rank parts to create the Low Rank versions of weapons if you intend to build up the entire tree to a desired High Rank weapon, so they are useful in that regard.
I'm pretty stuck with insect glaive.
the healing kinsect is nice to have, and the weapon has decent mobility and damage.
Might try heavy bow gun again when i can get more mobility skills in my armor sets.
But then i'm no authority, still haven't gone to capture the volcano dude.
Somehow i have gotten trapped in a vicious cycle of doing vounties, picking new ones, and then going to do them, and i never manage to get my queue empty at one go so i keep doing more and more bounties.
AT Teostra down in 12'14", which is my best time so far, and with no carts! Feels good.
Of course right before it I had a 2-carter which finished at 12'44", so I think I lost a lot of time trying to heal and not being in its face quite as much. Once you learn the spacing for its blast powders and come in with the Fireproof Mantle and the Temporal Mantle, it's really open to attacks... a lot. And dropping crystal overhangs on it is basically free, if you can lure it under the second one long enough for it to drop.
Still, as much fun as I start having once I'm at this point with a monster, I'm only one more ticket away from having enough for the Dante Layered Armor and I think I'll call it on AT Teostra. God knows I've killed enough Teostras in my time.
One thing I noted while making the armor for it is that I had 2 tails and 5 gems. This game don't like dropping tails unless you chop them off.
After spending a long time with the Hammer I think my favorite thing about it is the sense of forward momentum that it engenders. You're always moving while carrying it, the charged upswing has a nice little explosive forward dash to it, you run while charging, you can reset your charge by rolling forward, your unsheathing attack while running takes a big step, you just never stop moving. You're always pushing inside of the monster's controlled space, predicting where it's going to be and intercepting it by moving in kind. Gotta keep going for that head. You never stop moving except when it is time to drop the big numbers. Charged upswing in the big bang combo, mwa.
It's... kind of affected my ability to be effective with other melee weapons, though. I love the switch axe aesthetically but it feels like I'm holding still while using it, even in axe form.
Speaking of DLC, I did not get the divine armour or fair wind charm pre-orders were supposed to get, and there's no listing for it in the store page.
It's in my library as 'not installed' but there's nowhere to install it from.
IIRC you should be able to just click the empty checkbox in the library to tell it to install it. Beyond that, to actually claim the items you need to talk to the housekeeper.

Eyepatch, kush chest beta, kaiser arms beta (I think), Bazel waist, death stench heels beta. I think I'm wearing the earplugs charm, too. It's a mess, which is why I love layered armor, and also: this is the only set I ever use.
I slot in crit boosts, one handicraft, uh.... usually I'm carrying two health boosts I think. I run around with maxed handicraft, earplugs, weakness exploit, crit boost, and then a mix and match of other things according to the needs of a given hunt.
I carry the Diablos Shatterer II (boost to aff and health regen) so I always want that white sharpness even if only for 20 hits, I never want to have to pay attention to roars, and I want to get good crits as often and as heavily as possible.
It's a really simple set that focuses on just hitting things as hard as possible while being interrupted as infrequently as possible. I haven't changed it since I was able to make it and have been running with it since before Deviljho landed. I'm thinking of changing it out for some of that new Behemoth armor hotness but I'd really want that new Kulve hammer if I was going to do that.
Can you equip any of these later on for cosmetic reasons? Part of my question was based on the fact that I was building this sweet looking armor set, only for it to be immediately outclassed by the armor I can make off my next kill. Like is there a single top-tier armor set out there, or are there multiple viable armors end game?
Also another question: Why do I have like 80 investigations available? Why would I ever want to do an investigation that's 'kill 20 small monsters' or something like that. What's the value there? I do a lot of investigations for large monsters if I'm farming their meatparts for my clothing but that's about it.

cosmetics? no, not really. just for fun (or if you later on play with someone in low rank and want to use gear comparable to theirs)
investigations will always be procing based on what you kill (small monsters, big monsters) or when you pick up tracks. they're good for farming parts (some gear will need small monster parts) and later for decorations (tempered monsters at the end of high rank)

Definitely multiple viable endgame sets (mostly mix-and-matched parts), which will mostly be dictated by the armor skills that you find useful for a particular weapon. This is why the game lets you store over a hundred presets. This being said, there are clearly some winners out there (the Dragon Eyepatch is really popular, for example, because it gives Weakness Exploit and a slot).
The game has "layered armor" which allows you to change the cosmetic appearance of a particular part to some preset armor appearances (which look like existing armor, like the Guild set). The list of layered armor is expanding all the time, so the possible cosmetic combinations keep going up. Most of these are unlocked through gameplay and turning in tickets.
You will continually get investigations as you play the game. They are all randomized, and there's no reason to do one if you don't want to do it. The oldest investigations are automatically deleted when you get new ones, once you hit the investigation cap.
+1

i have two hunts with ranged weapons under my belt, and i only finished one of them
maybe i should try bow. bowguns didn't light a fire under my ass. on the other hand bow looks boring as shit
If on the PC and using KBAM I'd turn off Aim Assist (in the options under Controls IIRC).
Made using lightbow gun (and I'd assume the other range weapons) feel so much more fluid IMHO.
nah i'm 600 hours in on console
i just hate ranged combat

So what exactly do these voucher things you can toggle at the start of a mission do? I've been leery of poking them in case you want to save them for super awesome things but the UI suggests a limit of 5 total you can have and I'm nearly there at this point.

Yeah, the limit is 5. Vouchers give you double the zenny payout and give you slightly better loot drops (not much better... usually it's just one item or guarantees the maximum number of item rolls or something dumb like that). They aren't valuable, so burn them with abandon. I like to use them before high-paying investigations that I solo, so I get a lot of cash off of them (not that cash is ever an issue... you can always sell Ore/Bones/Monster Parts for loose change).
late game they're good on the tempered jho/arch tempered events, as they increase basic reward slots, and those events actually have good rewards in those slots

Also something I just read and hadn't noticed is that Rotten Vale is littered with remains of multiple Dalamadurs. That is pretty darn neat.
Which is a bummer. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.
