It's not a coincidence that the only "pro consumer standards" people like TB and Jim Sterling focus on are the ones that affect them personally.

Pretty sure Jim was instantly against GamerGate, and even welcomed Gamergater hatred.

He wasn't explicitly anti-gamergate, so much as he very cautiously told them "Maybe try not to harass the shit out of people?"

He was much newer to YouTube at the time, and I can imagine he wasn't as confident in the stability of his fanbase at the time like he is now.

Also, Jim has devoted a few episodes to calling out sexist, racist, and "ist"s of other sorts over the years.

The time where he specifically talked about the problem with Quiet from MGSV is one of my favorite episodes.

I bounced off flcl almost immediately. Debating if I should try watching it again. Anyone else struggle through it the first time? It was just weird.

It is just weird, but it's also deceptively deep, and is more rewarding on multiple viewings.

I didn't struggle with it really, but I'd definitely recommend giving it another try. It's only six episodes, after all.
I can't watch FLCL without thinking that it's the weirdest allegory for having sex that I've ever seen.

While there's obviously a ton of winks at sexual awakening and adolescence and all of that

At its core FLCL is a coming of age story about a boy who doesn't want to grow up to be a man because all the men in his life are fucking garbage. Especially in regards to how they treat women.

It's so random and goofy because without that layer of goofiness, the actual themes of the show are dark as hell.

Naota's older brother - the only older male he respects - left to play baseball in America, and never bothered to tell his girlfriend Mamimi back in Japan that he's got a new American girlfriend.
Naota's dad is complete trash, and among other things tries to peek on 6th grader Ninamori in the bath.
Also he talks a lot of shit about Mamimi and is generally cruel to her. It's strongly hinted that Mamimi ran away from home and is now homeless. She eats by begging for leftover bread from the bakery and washes her clothes in the river, as students gossip and laugh about her. Naota's dad responds to this by... Not allowing her in the house, even though she used to date his older son.
Ninamori's dad had an affair with his secretary and it went public. So he's planning a divorce, he's going to take Ninamori, and the secretary is already driving her to school and inserting herself into her life as her new mom. No one's bothered to ask Ninamori how she feels about any of it, and she - 6th grader that she is - thinks it's on her to save their marriage. Ninamori's guiding figure is Puss in Boots, who told lies that became true and got a happy ending.
Haruko is kiiind of a predator, and its strongly implied that the reason Weird-Eyebrows-Guy is trying to be so overly manly in the first place is because Haruko used and abandoned him years ago back when he was Naota's age.

And Haruko's the only adult(ish) woman in the show. Not because the show doesn't care about women, Naota likes Mamimi and he has a gradual first crush on Ninamori, but no adult women stay around his family, they all leave or are shut out. He has zero positive male/female relationships to base his own idea about relationships off of.

FLCL's got a lot of heavy shit in it!

And Progressive looks to continue the trend:

    https://youtu.be/MqDlfqmUlcg

I love the idea of having the follow-up series center on Ninamori.

I look forward to seeing this.

I don't think that's Ninamori! I think all the original kids would be adults by now if they make an appearance

My biggest problem with Jim sterling is all the faux fascist iconography but it’s not really his fault it became a lot less funny since he established it as his YouTube gimmick.

    Besides that he’s good.

I just wish he didn’t feel the need for any bit.

But hey, I’m sure he knows his audience and work better than I do and if it works for him it works. It means his works not for me but that’s the beauty of the digital age, I can find other content creators that do work for me.

This is a good response I saw elsewhere:
As a gamer, I think this thread is a perfectly appropriate place to mourn.

I mourn for the John Bain that could have been, who at one time apparently did believe in actual ethics in games journalism, before he decided that it was easier to latch onto bigoted conspiracy theories that were disproven after literally 10 seconds of investigation. For the John Bain that at one time supported the indie gaming scene and the panoply of viewpoints that indie devs brought to that scene, before he chose to characterize them as harridans and inauthentic poseurs that deserved spite and vitriol and harassment.

I also mourn for the works of the many, many programmers and content producers that we will never get to experience because he decided that a sharp tongue was better directed at marginalized voices than that of the worst aspects of the culture he embodied. For the voices of those people who he and his followers silenced by harassing them out of the industry, off of social media, and in some cases, into hiding. I mourn for those that lived (and perhaps still live) in fear of what his audience was capable of once he turned their energy towards them for no other reason that they needed to drown out anyone pointing out problematic aspects in games and gaming culture.

That is how and what I choose to mourn. Nothing more.

Ok. Has anyone else seen this issue, or am I going mad?

On some computers, when I play YouTube videos with someone talking, sometimes the voice part of the video starts to soften until it vanishes almost entirely, but with the music or other sounds still there. As if YouTube is doing something to detect, isolate, and downtune parts of the audii that contain voices.

Is this a bug, or could it have something to do with security features on the computer's network?

Ironic lol-its-only-a-joke deployment of faux facist iconography is one of the ways that facism has squirmed its way back into the mainstream of discourse over the last few years, so yeah, it is partially his fault, actually.

It basically boils down to -
the people who made the movie were basically competent and actually tried, but were seriously hampered by the source material and the writer's insistence on how the story should be told.

    Yeah, basically accurate.

Also, the downside to Knights isn't their personality, it's their really low Movement rate. And sometimes weird growths.
