[Canadian Politics] No, we're never going to stop talking about pot legalization.
I think it would help if we didn't wait until hormones were making people crazy to teach them about sex and relationships but then you'd get the angry's all upset because you're preaching your ideology to my kid blah blah.
Someones gotta break the cycle and it has to be before these toxic communities take hold of a person.
OK so then what is your idea? You're busy shooting down what we're discussing.
Psychiatric help for boys who are developing these hatreds. Their problem is not what they think it is. They would not be cured by sex. They need to know how to deal with their anger towards women.
It’s not as easy as “hire them a hooker” but long-term it could prevent a lot of crime and abuse.

I think we need to give up on the idea that having sex is what makes you a man. I see people saying this reflexively about any guy they don’t like - “Bet he’s not getting laid” and it turns sex into a mark of social status. We need to stop disparaging men who are unsuccessful with women. I know many fantastic men who are unsuccessful with women,

Thats a pretty tall order though, considering how much of a motivator sex is, I dont even LIKE sex that much, but every damn spring it's the same old story. Not to mention I already agree with the concept that sex shouldnt be a mark of status, but I still jump to that reaction, 30 years of pop culture indoctrination is a lot to just forget about.
Apparently, this guy was also kicked out of the Canadian Forces after 16 days for "failure to meet standards of dress and deportment" during BMQ (basic training), which as I understand it takes some doing. For those interested, this is before weapons training.
Sex with a prostitute would not be a substitute for what you were after if you wanted like a relationship and a sense of connection, even if fleeting.
In various documentary and written accounts of people who have been sex workers, that is exactly what many clients are seeking, some clients don't even want sex, just a clean transaction for intimacy, to the point it was one of the highlights listed as to why some enjoyed their work.
Yeah, the Forces said he had problems with the discipline and a few other things. Though at the same time the military made a point today of saying it was a "failure to adapt to standards" thing rather than any particular lines being crossed: more incompetence than malice or flagrant misbehaviour. Screening out that kind of thing as early as possible is part of what basic training's designed to do, after all.
Gonna go out on a limb and suggest bouncing off the military probably didn't do wonders for his worldview, though, especially if he was already falling down the more-screwed-up-than-usual masculinity hole by then...
I didnt even know you COULD get kicked out of the military short of war crimes, and even that seemed to be dependant on if someone filmed you doing it.

Well 16 days isn't so much getting kicked out of the military as not being accepted in.

I guess that makes sense. One of our most notorious spree shooters, John Ausonius, AKA The Laser Man, was in the military, but turns out they never actually threw him out, they just sort of shuffled him around. Apparently training a person with mental issues they didnt have a proper diagnosis for yet and giving him weapons training was a bad idea. Long story short, this happened in the 90's, and he's the reason I wasnt called in for military service when I turned 18.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity with National Observer, they say a high-ranking public servant instructed them, at least one month before the pipeline was approved, “to give cabinet a legally-sound basis to say ‘yes’” to Trans Mountain. These instructions came at a time when the government claimed it was still consulting in good faith with First Nations and had not yet come to a final decision on the pipeline.

With all due respect a physical relationship, man or woman is a critical part of life in this world. 8 wholey respect those who choose not to engage in this but it is a demonstrable fact that life is a messy sperm concoction and no internet post, Facebook rage will change literally hundreds of thousands of years of human evolution.
What has happened is that men have to come to terms with being powerful isn't all you need. You need emotional intelligence, you need to be able to negotiate this society. We're not less, (men) but women are also not less and neck beards can Fuck off about it.
I saw people wash out of BMQ after a couple weeks, either by just quitting or not having the mental werewithal to consistently dress themselves or accurately monitor the time of day or some such

In my weekly "fuck the CBC" chronicle, this is what I woke up to on the radio this morning:
"What is this new phenomenon of incels? We'll try to decrypt their online messages."
They are not a new phenomenon, they've been here for many years, you've just been ignoring them or false-equalizing them to equal-rights groups or hiding them in your catch-all "conservative" label. And they don't need decrypting, they are not mysterious or clever, they are quite explicit in what they believe and want to do.
In short, fuck you and your lazy self-agrandizing reporting CBC.
The whole incel thing is a minor nitpick at this point. They should have some fucking gravitas and be the Canadian Broadcaster of note, not a cheap CTV knockoff.
I spend a lot of time on the internet and I've never heard of the word "incel" until a few days ago. I knew of the general details surrounding people like that, but never the actual word. And I bet if I went outside and polled my neighbors, they wouldn't have a damn clue what the word was either.
Don't get pissy because people aren't "hip to your lingo". It's a great way to poison your message before you've even begun to spread it.

The word incel is new, but the phenomenon is not, and confusing the two does a direct disservice to public awareness and understanding of the issues at play.

"Bitter misogynist" used to be a personality flaw, not a right-wing political movement.
Yeah, I've spoken about this to over a dozen people, inclduing at work, online gaming friends, and friends and family. Literally no one else has heard the term 'incel' and they were all pretty damn shocked that there was a community of people unable to have sex creating an echo chamber of toxic hate towards women.
I wouldn't be surprised if most of these people also haven't heard of the PUA stuff and that thing have been around for like 20 years or something.
The psychologist analyzing the shooter thinks he chose the Mosque because it would be more acceptable in his mind and others to target people of that religion. So it seems that that the desire for this guy to kill came before he found the reason or the target.
I wonder if that's kind of the same thing as with the Toronto attack. Is it a life situation that leads to a mental break down, radicalization and violence? Or is there a pre-existing mental illness, that's given a focus and validation by an echo chamber such as 'incel'?

A lot of incels sound kinda "borderline personality disorder" to me.
Still have to try to convince certain coworkers that, no, it wasn’t a Muslim terrorism attack, and what the incel movement was.
Everybody knows garden variety misogyny, every knows about violence towards women by their partners, but few people realize there are groups of of men so angry about not getting laid, they will kill people. It’s still quite a internet phenomenon. Hate the CBC as much as you want, but mainstream media hasn’t really noticed uncles as a distinct phenomenon.
Probably the only good thing to come out of this is the spotlight that has been focussed on them.

Borderline personalities are really frustrating to treat and deal with, my wife sees them all the time. Its not something you can just prescribe something and bam no more voices or mania. It tons of cognitive behavioral therapy to correct life long learned behaviors and habits and ideas, assuming you can even get them to seriously do CBT in the first place.

Given that one of Canada's deadliest domestic terrorism attacks was over exactly this mentality and happened over two decades ago, the lack of awareness is troubling.
Well neither are new, but to the average person both probably are
If only we had a corporation of sorts dedicated to broadcasting this sort of important information to the Canadian public...
What would you have had them do? Scour the internet for weird and creepy subcultures, and write scare pieces about what they may or may not do in the future? I feel like they just can't win with you.

"I will write your name in the ruin of them. I will paint you across history in the color of their blood."
While the notion/issues are not remotely new, I'm pretty sure it was a thread about or including discussion of the 2014 Isla Vista killings where the term first came to my attention, or somewhere around then.
Not to say that this was going to stick with the general populace, but a google search for 2014 includes a Washington Post article that includes the term.
Again, I'm not saying that these aren't simply new names associated to much older problems, or that it would be common knowledge.
But this explicit term associated with lashing out violently has happened before. As far as I've seen confirmed in the news, the Toronto killer even praised/referenced the Isla Vista killer on Facebook, so it's a rather direct line connection there.

Are we really going to call shit on CBC for not reporting on a small group of sad Reddit/8chan misogynists that until the other day nobody had ever heard of? Whats next an exposé on the dangers of the 4 day Time Cube, or how you really cant do anything at Zombo.com?

Early childhood training to teach boys:
a) that women are also people and not rewards or objects that they or anyone else are entitled to,
b) healthy ways to express emotional distress and that it's OK (and not "unmanly") to do so,
c) that they have value outside of their ability to "get" a girl or a high paying job or popularity

On a related note, CBC ran this story about the mosque shooter yesterday: It's come out that two months before the shooting he went to a mall with his rifle and sat outside for several hours before changing his mind because it didn't feel right.
The psychologist analyzing the shooter thinks he chose the Mosque because it would be more acceptable in his mind and others to target people of that religion. So it seems that that the desire for this guy to kill came before he found the reason or the target.
