What about the Rum?!

I tried asking this in SE, but they went from Mozzerella sticks to the Queen of England too fast and it got missed (or ignored).

So, guys .... whats a good rum? I don't really drink it, but some is on call to be served tonight at my house and I have yet to buy it. In addition to being served it will also be a part of the salmon I'm making. Any suggestions?

Thanks

For adecent rpice and good taste I like Captain Morgans Special Stock. it's a dark rum, they're a dark amber color not clear like normal rums. Dakr rums are more flavorful and smoother than clear ones since they're aged longer.
Barcardi Special Reserve is a pretty decent one too.

Are you interested in Big Black Dick?

For those of you who need a picture...

Seriously though. I dunno. I did pick up a few bottles of that for friends when I was visiting Cayman. They thought it was hilarious and tasty. Still a running joke at work.

Anything Captain Morgan, you can't go wrong. Private stock costs more and is stronger but the tattoo is sweeter.

Point: Sweet rum will give you the worst hangovers!

Captain Morgan's may be plentiful and cheap, but that does by no means equate to quality.

Try Pyrate, I have bought a couple bottles and it goes down smooth, either in Coke, Pina Colada, or other misc. mixed drinks.

You can get Jamaican cooking rum from most liquor stores. Its not dark, and its overproofed. I think of Captain Morgan's and Bacardi as generic, but the higher priced stuff is generally better. I'll have to try me some of that Big Black Dick.

Captain Morgan is alright, but I've found that Sailor Jerry's is a bit better (as spiced rums go). A little less expensive and a little bit stiffer.

Captain Morgan is a small step above the cheap crap.

    Private Stock is just sweeter.

Light or dark? What will it be used for?

    Are you in the US?

If not, Havana Club is the best rum I have come across. Even compared to the high end, expensive rums.

Bacardi, Captain Morgans are generic rums, don't really taste amazing. If you want kickass strong rum, Screech is the way to go. But as far as taste, Havana Club is amazing.

If you live in the US.... Sucks to be you.

Listen to this man. Sailor Jerry's is hella tasty, with a little cherry apple aftertaste, and it only costs 14 bucks for a fifth. Amazing stuff. If that wasn't enough, they are anti-sweatshop for their merch and support independent music around the Philly area.

    Another vote for Appleton. Tasty.

I never developed a taste for white rum though, and tend to compare quality by which one makes me want to retch the least.

I went with Captain Morgan Original the reason being was that I didn't need a gallon of the stuff and all I could get in a smaller amount was the original. The fish turned out great

I didn't drink much rum when all I had tried was Bacardi and Captain Morgan, but once you try a rum than can be served on the rocks, that definitely changed. Look for some Cruzan or go to a bar/restaurant that specializes in rum. Caribbean themed places are generally good for this. You really won't want to go back to the cheap stuff.

I personally think Captain Morgan is overrated; you can step one foot to the right in any grocery or liquor store and find something better that's not going to break the bank, like, say, Appleton or Myers. As far as sweet rums go, I'm a fan of Goslings Black Seal.

A thousand times yes for Sailor Jerry. There's even a pin up girl on the inside of every label. As if you needed one more incentive to drink.

Rum is one of the few liquors out there that goes down easy most of the time regardless of brand, but I have to agree with the Sailor Jerry all the way. Even if this is too late to influence your decision.

One tip. If you plan on Mojitos stay away from dark rum. It doesn't necessarily taste bad, but it makes a beautiful drink look like toilet water.

Mount Gay Barbados Rum is my personal fav... Though I dont know if it's just a natural bias from that being the major rum I've been exposed to (relatives from Barbados) anyway, it's spicy, but not as spicy as say a Jamaican rum.

Depending on where you live it could be quite expensive though, down there its about $2 for a fairly big bottle, but up where I live it's about $40 for the same bottle.

Extra Old is the stuff I buy, but I just noticed "Eclipse" on there, might be good.

Uh, Captain Morgan and Bacardi are both terrible. Absolutely fucking hideous. Appleton Estate's 12 year aged bottle is pretty okay. Redrum is/was really good, I think it's marketed as Voodoo now. I tried some aged 60 years st. augustine a couple weeks back, and I had a shot and just swished it about in my mouth straight up before swallowing. It was that smooth. Completely ridiculously good.

This is like going into a beer thread and being all "everyone I know likes coors lite but you should also totally try corona".

    Neither are quality liquors.

My father will drink nothing but Bacardi and cokes, and I have yet to figure out why. Bacardi is nasty, nasty shit that I do not allow in my own house. Haven't had much experience with other rums, but stay the fuck away from bacardi.

Bacardi white rum is great for mixers but terrible to drink alone. Cpt Morgans is very sweet and has some spice, it makes a good rum and coke but that's about it. The Private Stock is almost sickly sweet so it can go along way. Appleton Estate is my personal favorite for an all purpose rum. It costs a little bit more than the average rum but it's good stuff.
