Poor mabel had a bad week. She's always had a little bit of arthritis in her hips, but she woke up on Monday with a terrible flare up and couldn't even stand comfortably

    j54r2f7mz6ja.jpeg
    (pictured: doggy hot pack)

then she had a bad reaction to the pain injections the vet gave her, and spent two days having hallucinations and crying. My sister had to sleep in the dog bed for a night or two to keep her calm.

She's finally over the drug reaction, and the arthritis seems to have calmed down for now. X-ray results pointed to her left hip and possibly the base of her tail/lower spine being problem areas. Waiting to find out what the recommended long term treatment options are, and hoping it doesn't include tail amputation (!!!).

This gigantic boy is Logan, who is dealing with some kind of painful eye infection so he's not getting around so well. Luckily it doesn't keep him from getting carried around and purring like a chainsaw.

Logan (now named Richie) got adopted and is living his best life:

my oldest kitty is starting to display hell of dangleberies so he's been subjected to the humiliation of kitchen sink ass baths in which he displays not only GRUMPYFACE but KICKYFEETS.

All i can do is look him in the face and say "this wouldn't be happening if you cleaned your butthole proper".

On shelter cat duty this week and we got a couple of extremely chonky kitties in yesterday.

This big sweet potato is Twinkie:

    0SAzSgD.jpg

He is a perfect little gentleman who wants nothing more than to get scritches while he prances back and forth in front of you. He literally prances up on his toes, which is impressive for an 18+ pound cat.

This is Peaches, who is too aggressively affectionate to photograph well:

    RBH4Iyk.jpg

She's got some unfortunate hygiene issues related to her size and inability to reach her back end so guess who gets to clean her ass tonight?

Quick question for more experienced dog owners -
when setting up a routine for your dog, how flexible/strict are you?

We've set up fixed meal times and walk times, but more flexible with grooming, training & play... IDK of that's all right or if it would be better to do those at fixed times too?

    LOL can empathize @Pinfeldorf : ))
My puppy also gets really excited when there's a Zoom class
Yesterday, one of my students talked to him more than to me (and who can blame her - he's way more fun than boring office hours X)

It's somewhat dog dependent, but if you go with too rigid a schedule you can end up with a dog that freaks the fuck out when things deviate at all (which, life being what it is, will happen sometimes). Dogs definitely need structure and rigidity but it's good to include enough wiggle room that they're comfortable with the idea that sometimes a day is different and that's okay.

Our dogs have to learn to accommodate a lot of flexibility, especially about mealtimes. I figure it's good for them to be able to handle that - they know they're gonna get fed, but it's not always gonna be on the dot. Same with walks, etc, though uschi at least is a bit of a control freak and has a preferred schedule he likes to maintain.

So it had been posted in the snugshugs thread that when you give a cat a laptop of their own, they instantly become productive MBA felines. I wasn't sure, so I tested this theory out with a cat-sized laptop.

    It's true y'all.

We are very flexible with regards to times, but we are very strict with routines. With Theia eating he knows he has to be on his bed while she eats, he has to sit before dinner and wait before he can eat/go on walks.

We do give him daily morning and afternoon walks, these are flexible and to be honest, he can be a jerk if they are delayed too long. But overall I think it’s the structure that helps him more than specific times.

Been posting a bunch of stuff in the Snugglehug thread, which I thought was the pet thread? But I was wrong and posted bummer/downer stuff there.

One of our bunnies, Waffles, is getting to be about 6 1/2 years old. In his time hes fought off two brain infections, several ear infections (lops and humidity!) and two upper respiratory infections. Hes needed a molar grind (a thing some rabbits need once in their life if their teeth grow too fast for casual chewing and toys to keep the growth at bay) and hasn't been eating solid food for bit. After we helped him fight off another upper respiratory infection we had him gaining weight by syringe feeding him 3 times a day. He was in high spirits! Surgery was set for Thursday. He was doing good this afternoon.

Then tonight we came to get him set up after dinner and he appears to have lost the use of his back legs. Tomorrow were taking him in and seeing what the vet says but we are preparing for the worst. Honestly were prepared for him to maybe not make it through the night, so I'm staying up with him, just so hes not too scared.

If misery shares company, my kitty is really sick and I'm thinking this is probably it. She's been cycling between pretty good and deathly ill (kidney problems) but this is probably the worst she's ever been. She hasn't drunk water for two days. Barfing up bile constantly. What kills me is that, in the brief moments where her pain doesn't seem to be overwhelming her she's still affectionate with me. Like she'll turn around to face me. When she gets up she'll nuzzle me. Eye squints. God I wish I could do something for her. I've been periodically cleaning the vomit off her face, but that's about the most I can do besides coo-ing to her.

Just gotta vent somewhere, sorry to pile on the bad news. Was waiting for a call from the vet before midnight, and well that came and went and now not sleeping.

Brought cat in to emergency vet on Saturday, he was yowling and looked like he was having trouble with peeing. Hasn't been too much signs of trouble, we had one accident a week or so ago that we weren't sure which cat it was even, but suspect crystals. Yep, poor kitty is blocked up.

They do surgery and keep him overnight. Watch him for a while Sunday, take out the catheter, they're waiting for him to pee so they can check it all out but boy blocks back up again though and can't pee. Redo the catheter.

We've been doing this for a few days now and cat is still stuck at the vet and they took it out this morning and he ... still hasn't peed so they won't let him go. But what the fuck is even happening, it's just infuriating and helpless feeling and I don't know why but I can't feel like I trust the hospital. It doesn't feel like this should be happening but I got fuck all else to go by.

He's like six or seven years old and this was supposed to be "fucking hell, well dump some money but he should be fine and live a healthy life, probably a special diet" and instead is like what the fuck is he going to survive, are we getting our cat back, is he suffering, are we just racking up a bill for a cat that we won't even get to say goodbye to now cause we didn't expect any of this.

Solidarity friends. Sorry to hear about your fur babies also being in the lurch.

We took him in today and the vet agreed with us, he was barely breathing at that point so we held him while they did what had to be done. They made us one of those paw print memorials and were getting him cremated. I found a place that sends you a custom stone thing that you mix yourself so you can mix the ashes in with it. That way, no matter where we go he'll always be with us. My wife also wants to do a thing where they mix some of them in with glass and make a Christmas ornament. I know it sounds morbid, but I like the idea of always having a part of your loved ones with you.
