It will probably be 7-8 range in traditional review scores.

Rage 1 is like looking at what Borderlands would have been if Gearbox wasn't smart enough to pivot the game away from its original design. Unfortunately id doubled down on that direction instead and we got a forgettable brown-grey experience whose only notable claim to fame is getting John Goodman to voice act.

Rage 2 is like looking at id realizing in the years since that the way to go was the way Gearbox went(over-the-top absurdism) and deciding hey let's follow that route.

Which is not necessarily a bad thing, I love absurdist humor - but it's still pretty funny that you can tangibly see the realignment in studio design philosophy from the time Rage 1 failed and when Doom 2016 took off after narrowly avoiding setting themselves up to fail again.

I also can get Rage 2 without giving money to a shitheel exploitative company (glaring at you, Gearbox), which is a plus.

That's a very good, succinct description of RAGE number 1.

There’s an interview with Tim Willits where they asked about it, and even they didn’t notice until years later when someone pointed it out.

Rage 2 early access streams starting up if you are curious about live gameplay.

Reviews are starting to post and looks like 7-8s out of 10.

One thing that concerns me, and has kept me from preordering, is one of the items listed for the deluxe edition. It mentions a progress booster, but I can’t find any information anywhere on what that actually does. Just worried it’ll be another Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and the game will play better if you are willing to shell out for the xp boost.

[edit]And having said all that 5 minutes of Googling brought me to this article:
    https://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2019/02/15/cheat-codes-and-xp-boosts-wont-cost-real-money-in-rage-2/amp/
Looks like you’ll be able to buy do boosts in game, alongside other, unspecified, micro transactions. Think I’ll wait on reviews for it.

I'm definitely in camp sit and wait. I really liked the original rage - it had flaws, but it had some freaking great gunplay.

Also the deployable rc car bombs and spider drives were great, and there were some genuinely freaky areas. This is... I hope it's good, but I'm less than trusting of bethsanda as a publisher, and avalanche as a studio (the fact that jc4 landed with a wet splat and basically vanished from discussion is not confidence creating!)

On the other hand, Id. So ???

All I care about honestly is the combat itself. If it is even in the general vicinity of Doom 2016, I’ll be all over it. All the other stuff is superfluous to me.

Currently 73 on Metacritic. So I guess it really is another Days Gone situation.

A common complaint is that the final game isn't nearly as wacky as the trailers would lead you to believe.

Having watched some streamers this morning it feels pretty apocalypse far cry. I dunn could be a game that doesn't stream well, but this seems to be a wait for a sale/game pass game.

Reviews seem to be hovering around 7-8/10, praising the outstanding shooting and combat mechanics, but a pretty lifeless open world and lack of story.

Which is about what I expected.

I played Rage for 4 hours on a free weekend years ago and was pretty unimpressed. I love id software too. Just didn't like it. Turns out I actually own it on Steam, so I must have picked it up for free on some promotional thing or for 90% off or something on a sale.

The shooting levels were good old id software shooting. The problem was they were too short and there was way too few of them.

So if you didn’t like the rest of the game lining them then it wasn’t a great game.

The issue was there wasn't much to the game lining those shooting levels. Like in Rage 1 the "open world" amounted to like a world map to the dungeons.

As I recall, they cut out an enormous amount of planned material from RAGE just to get it out the door. Did the DLC's put it back in ?

The cut content was actually due to MS expensive licensing per disc on the 360. They didn’t want the cost of 3 discs on it.

    Game is fun.

Feels like a mix of Bulletstorm/Doom only super lite. Granted, I'm pretty early on so this is more of a first impressions so YMMV.

RPS had a pretty decent video review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYm9rwcBiI0

Cant imagine i'm picking this up any time soon though - it's 115 NZD on steam, which is ridiclous (for contrast, if i was buying at the usd price, i'd be paying 90 NZD - so 25 dollar surcharge for being a new zealander, apparently?)

Sadly standard for Bethesda from what I've noticed, but still deeply icky. I'll wait for a sale on a complete edition, i think.

Okay, played up to the first town. I love the shooting. It's loud, punchy and kinetic, feels a lot like Doom 2016. The car is awkward at first, but I get where they're going with it - the car feels heavy and grunty. Once I got used to driving it, I enjoyed it. I cranked it to Ultra 1440p, and my 1070GTX and i9-7700 handled it at 60fps with the occasional dip. Running it off my SSD so loading and environment streaming is super speedy. Looked great too, though I turned off chromatic aberration.

There's a lot of complaints about the powers being weirdly bound to ctrl+F/V/C, but I found that to feel pretty good, though I only have the one power so far. Might rebind it once I get more if it feels weird

Also the BFG-9000 from the Deluxe edition is super fun.

I’m interested in everything about this game except the prospect of far cry levels of zany characters. Any impressions so far on whether the zaniness has been exaggerated for the add campaign? I’d like some actual characters and plot, I’m not after Shakespeare but I don’t think I can take any more Far Cry style nonsense

I’ve been hoping it’s closer to Wolfenstein in terms of over the top but with something to grab on to so it doesn’t all feel overwrought and exhausting

So far they have been nowhere near as zany as the trailers. Avalanche are definitely having some fun with it, but it’s not as way overdone as they made it out to be.

More over the top than Wolfenstein was though, but not hugely so.

They got some cool animations going with the enemies. In a fight I had guys throwing grenades at me and one was using a baseball bat to hit them over at me.

Good feedback, this is pushing me more toward picking it up. If the combat is solid and fast-paced like Doom was, I'm all over it. I couldn't give less of a shit about the story if the combat is good and fun enough.

This game is pretty good. Pop-in is pretty bad though (playing on Xbox One X). Had a few crashes and encountered a duplicated NPC as well.
