I've made myself ill by playing it for 8 straight hours.

Got a few powers unlocked now and maxed out some of them. It's great fun. Characters are well written too.

So what’s the verdict here? I liked the driving and combat of Mad Max a lot, but ultimately felt there wasn’t enough meat on the open world parts, is this similar?

Reviewers were complaining the open world's a bit empty, so probably.

It's a bit more livelier than mad max imo. And i was a huge fan of mm.

Also, if you like upgrading things like I do, this is your game. It seems like EVERYTHING has some sort of upgrade skill tree.
    Vehicles.
    Super powers.
    Weapons.
There are even general upgrades that you get via 'projects' (basically completing stuff for npcs) that upgrade you in various ways.

It's heavenly for people like me.

There's a lot of complaints about the powers being weirdly bound to ctrl+F/V/C, but I found that to feel pretty good, though I only have the one power so far. Might rebind it once I get more if it feels weird

Also the BFG-9000 from the Deluxe edition is super fun.

Next time I sit down to play it, I'm gonna bust out the MMO mouse and bind everything to instant cast on thumb buttons. :P

    Haven't used the BFG yet.

Games must be like the only place where the shopping gene effects me. I have like a million games I haven’t played, and I know I won’t even like rage all that much, but I’m a sucker for first person shooters and I just want it

  • DehumanizedDehumanized Registered User regular
the ctrl thing felt weird but mostly just because i'm so used to crouch being there; because it's used as a modifier to activate skills it actually does work pretty good as-is.

Saw thtis in a Steam review and chuckled:
It's like Mad Max except instead of being Batman when you're not in a vehicle, you're Doomguy.

Yeah, if you think of Ctrl being a kind of invisible power selection wheel it makes more sense, but instead of cycling to something and clicking it you just have access to other hot keys.

Hold Ctrl - wallhack/open big doors
    Ctrl + WASD - dodge
    Ctrl + C/V/F - powers

The only one not on a Ctrl key is your quad damage power and I found myself forgetting I had it because it wasn’t on the Ctrl list.

I’m seeing a lot of complaints that Bethesda withheld the fact that it uses Denuvo until 24 hours before release. I know Ubisoft uses Denuvo on all their stuff too, and that draws a lot of ire as well.

Not wanting to do my own research, why are people so mad at Denuvo? I know it’s a fo of DRM but other than that.

  • DirtyboyDirtyboy Registered User regular
If you are prone to motion sickness be wary of picking up this game. Changing FoV was enough to fend it off for an hour, going to have to tweak more settings. I think something about the graphics scaling they use to lock fps is causing it.

It is a particularly invasive form of DRM. Potentially harmful to your system.

It also requires communication with a server to verify that the game is legit. If the Devs/Publishers no longer wish to pay for it you can't play that game ever again. This has happened several times already. Sometimes those games end up on GoG sans DRM, but if you bought any other copy you're SOL.

Unless you pirated the game then it is your's forever and ever.

It is one of few DRM in which the pirated version is straight up better. Which, y'know, legitimately upsets paying customers and is a situation that should not exist.

edit- It also causes slowdown in the game and many Devs have actually been moving away from it or patching it out. So when people still use Denuvo it is like, I dunno, like someone still using fucking asbestos in their home. Like sure it works, but it is cancerous. Ars Technica has an article about its performance issues.

"In the years since Denuvo's emergence as a popular DRM option for PC game publishers, news of a game receiving a "no Denuvo" update has become so common that Ars rarely reports individual cases anymore. "

Apparently the game requires a Bethesda.net login to use any of the DLC on the PC version, even on the Steam release. Not the game itself, just the DLC.

Similarly, that apparently only became known 24 hours prior to release.

I have a login but I haven’t linked the accounts and don’t even have the Bethesda launcher installed anymore. I still got all my DLC as soon as I got out of the tutorial area.

With Denuvo, how is it potentially harmful to my system? I’ve got over a dozen Ubisoft games that use it and haven’t noticed anything untoward.

Reading a few reviews, and the last sentence seems pretty perfect.
In the end, Rage 2 is a game that appeals not to the critical, cerebral super ego, but wholly, unapologetically, to the id.

I bought it cos I have no discipline and one too many reviews compared the shooting to Doom 2016 and that targeted my weak spot

I immediately changed that to the middle mouse button. It's so much better that way.

Game has lots of bugs, nothing game breaking so far but did have to reload game a couple times. NPCs especially seem prone to audio not playing for them. The constant "you did a thing! press <enter>" is annoying the hell out of me, stop interrupting my game. Guns feel great, powers are nice, vehicles aren't as good as Mad Max (motorcycles are terrible, even with controller). Can only play in 1-2 hour stretches due to motion sickness but so far enjoying the overall game.

Also has a photo mode and here is motorcycle when it handles best, standing still.

Vehicle handling feels a lot like Wildlands. Biggest problem is turning circles suck so just get good at handbrake drifting.

Im having so much fun with this game. Unlocked more powers and flying around the map to reveal points of interest. The Authority sentry towers are probably the worst activity. Just kinda dull.

Yeah, I'm having a ton of fun. I feel like I'm playing a different game to what reviewers played.

I'm also continually impressed by how well optimized it is. I never thought my PC would run this at Ultra at 1440p, but it does, at an almost rock solid 60, and my laptops temps are well below other recent games.

I have a feeling that id software lent a hand in the video optimization of the Apex engine as well as the shooting mechanics. Both of which can only be beneficial to Avalanche moving foward.

Also absolutely take the earlier advice and bind Overdrive instant cast to the mouse wheel. Made firefights so much more fluid.

I've never changed keybindings so many times for a game in my life and I still can't get something I'm quite happy with. In the end, keeping CTRL for my power initial power was probably the way to go, but it just felt so silly at first, mostly for dodge. I have it on middle click now and that works MOSTLY great except when I need to hold the mouse wheel down to open doors or extract ore *. Mouse wheel clicky isn't meant to be held down for extended periods and it feels clumsy when I have to do it.

Grenades have been 3 keys so far, swapping various ones for melee. G tends to works great for grenades for me, but the wingstick I want to quickly tap and G is awkward for that to me.

Key bindings aside, I'm have a great time with the game, especially as I start to power up my abilities and weapons a bit. It will be nice to focus on some other paths now; I made a beeline for the Dr's projects when I realized it gave a way to detect nearby storage chests, data pads, and ark chests. It can still be tedious to find them with it, but nothing like it was finding the second data pad in the MASSIVE bandit camp I was in on release day.

    * Seriously, could they have made extracting ore from the meteors more tedious? =p. That and having to actually interact with ammo to pick it up are two design decisions I am not on-board with.

I'd put two and two together here. If Denuvo requires ongoing pay to keep using, patching it out once the sales rush is over is the best way to save money without turning your customers against you for bricking your product. Its not like most of these companies decided Denuvo was a bad thing, merely a thing with a limited window of usefulness for each title.

Oh for sure. Problem is Denuvo doesnt really work. So companies pay a small fortune for bad press and nothing to show for it.

Sometimes Denuvo works, but more often than not it does nothing.

Like in the case of Rage 2 which is already cracked.

holy shit this fucking intro, can you let me play for like five seconds straight without a pop up?

  • -Loki--Loki- Don't pee in my mouth and tell me it's raining. Registered User regular
Yeah the tutorial is badly paced. That mostly goes away once you hit the road, though pop ups continue for a while, just much less frequent.

Also holy shit the BFG. This thing will one shot most bosses. It’s cool that the deluxe edition incentive is as good as it should be but the game is definitely not balanced around having it as your third gun. Though the ammo is pricey.

I really enjoy the armour system in this. Usually armoured enemies are just tougher. But in this you actually blow bits of armour off to expose areas you can damage. It’s like the system in The Division 2 but way less spongey.

  • DanHibikiDanHibiki Registered User regular
It does not go away once you hit the road, because now there's a whole slue of car tutorials and side mission tutorials and oh a new gun and hold on, we're just going to put you in to a gun tutorial, and not a quick one either, they feel the need to stop the game cold and have you shoot at a bunch of dummies rather than, you know killing the mutants all around you.

  • -Loki--Loki- Don't pee in my mouth and tell me it's raining. Registered User regular
I said they’re much less frequent.

Man I’m in FPS heaven with this game. The graphics are mixed, sometimes it looks fantastic other times it’s a bit blurry and low res on xbox one x, but the gameplay is so fun, and I’m enjoying the story and world

I needed this after hating far cry 5. The shooting is just so fun, and the enemy animations are interesting and give you lots of gameplay opportunities. This feels like the first open world FPS made for me personally.

Also the explosions are SO GOOD

That's dynamic resolution scale. Essentially it lowers the rendered resolution, then upscales back to your current resolution, when FPS would dip below a certain threshhold. Normally it's not that noticeable - you can drop to about 85% before you start to get that fuzzy look. On PC it defaults to 60%, which goes way too low - which I guess is where the console versions probably sit. I put mine back to 85% tonight, and I'm now seeing a bit of FPS dip, but I prefer that to the fuzzy look when things get interesting.
