I take it to mean “A survival game where you collect food and materials to build a base alongside other people, and form a settlement and fight other players and random world monsters.” And instead of everybody starting off as cavemen you start off as a vault dweller or wasteland survivor or something.
It makes sense, considering 1776 was the year the Declaration of Independence was written, thus starting a new nation... and now you’ve got all these wasteland people trying to start their own nation.

And I guess that also explains why they picked such an un-Fallout-like song for the trailer.
That would track with the rumors, tbh. That'd be 5 years after the vault opens, just enough time for some folks to have started rebuilding but early enough that it's going to be mostly wildland survival.

The main issue for me is that Fallout is 50% story, 25% exploration, 15% hilarious VATS kills 10% loot for me.
