are there any central Star Wars characters that are explicitly mediocre pilots
everyone is apparently "the best"
For someone highly sensitive to the Force, Luke is kinda a mediocre pilot? He manages to avoid dying in the Death Star trench run thanks to Han, and then gets shot down on Hoth.

Thats not exactly a great way to measure skill. Luke is canonically a killer pilot.
Poe and Rey are the only new SW characters that are explicitly great pilots.

But when is that shown?
He is the only one able to make it through the trench run. At the end of star wars the obly thing he is actually good at is piloting.

well, with TIEs specifically, you were either The Best or dead because those things didn't have shields until like, TFA era and they were made out of toilet paper tubes and K'nex
edit: also Lando knew how to fly, but had a pilot droid most of the time

That was less an example of skill and more a combination of luck, force and assistance.

Mediocre pilots don’t live long enough to become central characters.

Yeah but he also has magic & the ghost of Obi-Wan Ben Larry Bonjo Kenobi to assist him.
After that though? We see him in the Hoth battle?
What I'm saying is Luke peaked in that trench run.

in star wars if you regularly fly and you're still alive I'd say you're a great pilot

Hitting a two meter exhaust port while flying at 120% speed while dodging artillery fire not enough for you?

In the new canon, Luke Fast and Furioused Vader, who shot down over two dozen other X-Wings in that same battle.
Now you may think to yourself, "that's a stupid move!" And yet, not only does he blindside Vader, he matched his movements so that Vader was unable to dodge. Vader, a guy so good at spinning he shot down a small Rebel fleet by himself. This was also shortly after ANH, so Luke's piloting hadn't improved *that* much.

I mean, it's a sprawling multimedia franchise and has been for years
I absolutely do think the movies, the primary component of the IP, should stand on their own without having to rely on books or comics filling in the gap, but I also don't mind the company saying these other things did happen and we consider them to be as "real" as the movies

"vader, a guy so good at spinning"
i don't really have anything to say about this, i mean, i know it's a good trick. it's just amusing to imagine anything thinking of vader and being like "tell you what, though. dude fuckin spins"
a scene that never happens in the movies and is never mentioned and has nothing to do with the presentation of the characters in the films? like, it's cool apocrypha, but it doesn't really inform anything that has happened. which is fine! but like, it doesn't overwrite what was very clearly delivered in the movies?
if stuff from all the apocryphal/supplemental stories out there is put into the mainline franchise, that's great, but i am not getting got? like, okay, cool. they did put in the thing people liked!
you can add to your story and expand it, but it doesn't alter the way it was originally told. like, that was literally the complaint people had about the special editions.
When you say, "films or it doesn't count" when someone is providing examples of said character doing a cool thing. It maybe makes one think you are not making the argument in good faith.
There is *also* very much evidence of Luke being a great pilot in the films too.
If folks personally dont care about the comics or books or whatever then that's fine
But being shitty about them not counting or not being canon when Lucasfilm expressly has to sign off on any new creations and according to several sources is VERY strict with them, and endorses them as canon is obnoxious
You dont have to personally read them or like them but they're absolutely canon

I don't think it is especially devastating to point out that star wars movies often aren't very good at communicating some of their basic character conceits
If folks personally dont care about the comics or books or whatever then that's fine

I don't think it's an inherently shitty position to say "I don't care about anything that happens outside the movies (unless it involves dash render, obviously)"

also gonna reiterate my position that the concept of canonicity is dumb

He's a good pilot for sure, good enough to lead. But probably not on the level of Anakin or Poe.

He also destroyed the reactor of the largest weapon's planet in the Empire, while being chased by Vader. Said battle also saw him down AT-STs, Imperial biker troops, and storm troopers using nothing but his bike's cannon and saber.
