Big ones IMO are Return, Frustration, Charge Beam, and Hidden Power (!)
Here's hoping there are equivalent moves added to 'mons that need it. I'll need to rejig two eeveelutions on my team
Hmm.
They removed you and Ominous Wind, but not Ancient Power. I presume because they didn't want to come up with another evo mechanic for those Gen IV mons? Could just have an Ancient Stone or something.
Could someone explain to a casual fan who never fully understood what Hidden Power does why it was so broken?
Your Pokemon gets to use a move from a different type. If that type is good for that specific Pokemon to use, lucky there. Not sure if there's more to it than that.

The problem is that it's a huge pain in the ass to get the type you want since it's based on IVs.

So pokemon have a (slightly hidden) set of stats called IVs that are set when it is hatched (or encountered). They add anywhere from 0 to 31 points in each area (e.g. attack, defence, speed).
Hidden Power's typing changes depending on what blend of IVs your pokemon has. (It used to have a different strength depending on the IVs too, but that was changed in the last generation or two.) So if you have a jolteon and you want it's hidden power to be Ice (to cover opponents that aren't weak to electric, like ground, bug, grass, dragon) the ideal IV spread is 31 in HP, SpAtk, SpDef, and Speed, and 30 in Atk and Def.
As Moth says, this is a pain to breed. It is already somewhat of a pain to get 31s in your pokemon's important stats, and QOL improvements like bottle caps that max your pokemon's stats didn't affect its hidden power
I feel like the broad move pools of the early generations, based on the concept that you wouldn't have more than one of any given TM, and then carried forward by cultural inertia into modern gens, is one of the biggest contributing factors to the comparative irrelevance of setup moves and volatile status effects. With the rare exception of Swords Dance or Agility to tip a sweeper over the edge of a KO boundary or a speed tier, most of the time the turn economy is such that you'd rather just have a deck of four moves that'll hit most everything for super-effective damage over one or two attacks and a couple gimmick abilities. Anything that helps move away from type-effectiveness rocket tag is a good thing in my book.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
I mean, is this confirmed to be actually be based on badges? Cause a random, out of context screenshot isn't really doing much for me; misreading mechanics based on leaks is a a fairly common thing.

just browsing the leaked pokedex again and goddamn this game is full of very good dudes, I'm gonna have a hell of a time picking a team
The leaks and leaked footage all over reddit and the chans have depressed me enough to cancel my preorder for this game. I was still somehow hopeful. That hope is now gone.
That'll teach me for /checks notes
Trying to make informed decisions on purchases?
I'm confused here.
If the all of the real information makes you not want the game then that is definitely good! Make informed decisions!
But in those places you listed there are piles of misinformation that people are latching on to just jumping on the bandwagon for.
So it's just basically... be careful.
Like there so many people talking about the game length and how the game is only 15 hours long... based on one person specifically blitzing the game and getting to last area?(as far as I can tell) in that amount of time. Which is roughly the same as it would be for every other pokemon game. While the original leaker took like 40 hours but that seems to get left out of those conversations.
Each of the bad things gets snowballed into sounding worse even when it is a negative thing which makes it really hard to see what to trust when even the folks that seem to maybe have a good point can't seem to help but exaggerate the issues.
So I dunno, I'll just be playing it this weekend and seeing how much is true and what actually feels different or worse than every other pokemon game.
i'm definitely not gonna make fun of people for whom any specific bugbear in a video game is the straw that breaks the camel's back, there's all sorts of petty reasons i've passed on a game
but also the top thread in /r/games is about the sound options being locked behind an NPC and it's like y'all the pokemon series has BGM and Pokemon Cries, that's it, the sound mixing is not actually important, this is not something worth throwing shit about
Maybe the game will look decent with massive normal people impressions a week or two post release. I'm in the wait and see camp, looking at how the release game compares to the leaks and if it is as dire at the leaks are or if they're a small snippet
Because the leaks are pretty dire, and the dev's bad PR hasn't out much preemptive faith in them.
I mean, at the very least, I do have plenty of other games to play on the Switch
i don't know if i'll like the badge system in practice but i like it thematically in how it basically reinforces the idea that this is a coming-of-age learning journey that adults have kids go through as an organized summer camp sort of thing to show they're ready for the responsibilities of working alongside pokemon
Unless they have drastically changed the way the progression is laid out, it's a change that virtually nobody will ever engage with ever, so when people complain about it it just seems like they've gotten upset enough over one thing that now they're looking for literally any tiny perceived slight to add to their "list of grievances"
I can understand being a little put out if your favourite Pokemon is absent. My favourite Pokemon are Chimecho and Crobat, and as far as I know both are not in Sword and Shield. It sucks but it's not like they have been wiped from existence.
People are complaining that there's "only" 400 mons in Sw/Sh. Gen 1 had 151. Gen 2 added 100 more for a grand total of 251. Gen 3 had about 200 Pokemon available. Even if you count the ones that were coded into the game but were unobtainable, that's still only 386. Gen 5 didn't allow you to use non Unova Pokemon until you beat the game although yes they were programmed in and you could use them later. Eventually there has to be a point where Game Freak says "we either have to make cuts or not add any more Pokemon" and that time is now.

Agreed. "Only 400" is still about 45% of all Pokemon, and like you said they didn't Thanos Snap the others out of existence.
From the Kotaku review, it sounds like the reason for the caps on what level pokemon you can catch is due to the Wild area, which has pokemon at vastly higher levels mixed among others of much lesser level, Xenoblade style. Without the cap, you could get lucky with a quick ball and catch one of those, which would trivialize the rest of the game. This seems like a reasonable move to me.

I'm pretty firmly in the backlash to the backlash stage, to the point where I hope this game sells a billion copies and somehow sweeps a bunch of goty awards just to watch reddit explode.

Hmm.
On the other hand a lot of pokemon lean on it pretty heavily to have a good viable moveset so I hope there's something to fill that void

Good news those Pokemon aren't in the game!
Maybe it fucks up some Pokemon and makes them worse. Gotta rip that band-aid off even if it hurts though.

The subreddit os complaining about how the trees look
The pokedex being cut is a bit annoying, and ill have to see on the new catching stuff, but otherwise it seems like any other pokemon game

This is at least an interesting way to try and make badges matter, even if it doesn't work
They do if they were traded one, which was the whole point. The disobedience mechanic only ever applied to traded pokemon.
It never would have mattered even if it did apply to caught Pokemon
Because
Unless they have drastically changed the way the progression is laid out, it's a change that virtually nobody will ever engage with ever, so when people complain about it it just seems like they've gotten upset enough over one thing that now they're looking for literally any tiny perceived slight to add to their "list of grievances"
But nerds' ability to be incredibly obnoxious about anything makes it super difficult to take even legitimate complaints seriously
