You get three balls right before the damage phase. They all have to be thrown at Calus's hand to stop the instakill mechanic from happening. When thrown at his hand, they explode as a way of confirming you did it correctly.
You most definitely are not supposed to have any balls during the damage phase and this is very clearly breaking the fight.

All my characters are over 370 (with mods, because of shit luck with engrams this week I've still got a few more weeks before I start getting to the cap probably, since I don't raid) so that's high enough, right?
EDIT: and are you supposed to only be able to have one key at a time? It doesn't say quantity:1 but I've had keys on my characters and 7 fragments for a few weeks and I can't make more (or get more fragments).

I slipped hard this weekend and only made it up to rank 25; i don't feel like grinding out the rest of it all tonight so I guess I'm just gonna have to wait for next rally.

you can have one rare and one legendary at a time, so if your rare gets upgraded, you can turn in 7 more fragments for another rare one

Oh. I don't think I have a legendary one. I guess that is gotten via doing EP with the blue one? I'm fairly sure I had the keys when I did the 10 levels for that one Ana quest, so that wasn't enough apparently?

i got bond and legs yesterday by having a legendary key and a rare key, clearing it, opening the chest, running it again and getting the rare upgraded to legendary, opening chest after second clear

They added that to factions too but then fucked it up. Apparently when they added the new thing where each rank gets you free items, they broke that on the Crucible, Vanguard and Faction vendors. So you should be able to buy all the armour directly but you currently can't. At least, afaik they've said it's a bug.

Ok, so how it works afaik is that you get the key fragments from various things.
Once per week you can turn in 7 fragments to get an encrypted key.
Finish 7 waves of EP and your encrypted key becomes a decrypted key.
You can use the decrypted key to open the chest that drops from wave 7.
You can hold as many decrypted keys as you want.
But you can only hold 1 encrypted key and only 7 key fragments.
So the limit to you gathering keys is not just getting 7 key fragments but also running 7 waves of EP per week to decrypt the key.
Alright, finally have a day off tomorrow so I can grind out the last two hundred of these stupid shitty tokens and finish this garbage awful "event"

I got my first job when I was 14, not because I needed to support myself, but because I wanted to buy my own games and stuff that I knew my parents couldn't really afford. So I did shitty things because I wanted something more than I hated the job.
I mean, there's a big discussion that could be had about the actual value of labor and the illusion of scarcity and how that plays into this, but ultimately, at least within the current system we exist in, dealing with something you don't enjoy for the ultimate goal of getting something you do, is perfectly valid.
It is just up to the individual how much they are willing to put up for what reward; it would seem that Maddoc decided it was worth the grind through something they don't enjoy to get whatever reward they're aiming for. Others have come to the opposite, realizing they don't care that much are would rather not bother (why I stopped playing for months after the very first faction rally incidentally).
Also, like people who do jobs they don't particularly enjoy or work for people they don't particularly like, sometimes you just want to vent, and aren't looking for justification or alternatives.

I also thought I was getting chestpiece after boots but I bet Bungie just know people care most for chestpiece and helmet and put those at the end on purpose.

Lucked into a EP group last night as I was just going to make a new key on my warlock. Guy used me and another guy to bring in his buddies. Proceeded to 9 man steamroll the poor event into oblivion many times in a row. Ended up with two shotguns and another sniper. 5/7 would randomly do EP again~

you can see most of it after 370 but it will get very difficult
you can do the first couple parts in the 360s but the opening will be tough
