CULTIST SIMULATOR is a terrific new game by video game auteur Alexis Kennedy, the creator and writer of Fallen London and Sunless Sea.

You play an ordinary person in a 1920s-ish setting who seeks escape from the crushing mundanity of their day-to-day existence in the pursuit of occult secrets.

You peruse rare bookshops and auction houses for obscure, forbidden tomes. You attend strange midnight cabarets whose performances may contain horrifying hidden truths. You recruit your acquaintances into a secret society. You send them out into the night to do your increasingly more damning bidding: to delve into forgotten ruins half a world away. To steal treasures from museums and private collections. To murder troublesome investigators. To sacrifice innocents. To eat forbidden flesh.

Alternatively, you can work at your clerk's job, get promoted and retire happily.

The gameplay takes place entirely at a green felt-topped gaming table. Every noun in the game, every object and skill, is a card. Every verb is a little woodcut tile. To accomplish things, you experiment with slotting combinations of cards into different tiles, letting them cook, and seeing what comes out. When you find a successful combination, you get a new piece of story, told in an evocative little tweet-sized bit of text. The whole thing has a very alchemical sense of obscure, potentially futile, but purposeful experimentation.

it is also difficult, frustrating, and opaque, but every new gameplay secret you puzzle out feels like teasing out an actual tidbit of arcane lore - secret knowledge that will serve you well in every subsequent playthrough.

If you appreciate atmosphere and ambient storytelling, and if the prospect of translating snatches of Latin and exploring a landscape of dreams sounds intriguing, check it out.

Yo chatbutts, anyone got further opines about this PC for vidya games?

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/TimDRX/saved/3mHkTW

(I put the bigger SSD and a prettier case)

I still dunno what I'm doing with the mobo and CPU. Not planning on overclocking, cause I'm sure I'd break it, so this seems the beefiest to get? Apparently these coffee things can self overclock or some crazy nonsense. Computers is hard now. :I

All week I've been telling myself I will drive to Ikea, but I haven't done it yet.

I keep hoping to find things as cheap and quality locally, but.. nope. So it's like a 2 hour drive just for $150-200 in furniture, which makes me think it likely isn't worth it. But... I also kinda wanna because I can't get it out of my head.

Got the scalloped potatoes in the fridge, ready to pop into the oven. I decided a bit of garlic would spice it up a bit, so BAM.

Also I think I added at least half again as much cheese as the recipe called for, but I mean why would you not add more Gruyere if you have Gruyere to add.

Last night I proved to myself that I can pan grill steaks and pan fry portobellos, so I just need to not forget how I did that.

The loooong part is going to be the sauce 'cause that stuff takes literal hours to cook. I may premix some of it just so I can get rid of the smell of the shallots.

Also going to add some bell pepper to the steamed green beans to add a bit of color.

Snacks are sorted and just need to be taken out just before everyone arrives so they stay fresh.

I'm thinking I should hit the grocery store and get some ice, since I do have an ice chest, and my fridge is not huge.

Of course the fun part is going to be the last-minute cleaning of my apartment.

Ikea's a pretty good day trip. Wandering for a while at first, especially in the smallwares departments, there's always something you'll go "huh, I never knew I needed this, but now I do." Get lunch, then go browse for potential future purchases. Finally, go get the things you actually came for.

They love having all weather pitches with plastic "grass" in every decent sized park here (I'd call them AstroTurf but maybe this is another transatlantic misunderstanding), but they're all pretty shitty in quality.

And I was playing football (soccer), nothing special just went up for the ball and came down on my heel, but because there's zero give in these pitches and I was wearing football boots the shock just went right up my leg.

I died in my first (and so far only) playthrough of Cultist Simulator because I ignored my health and finances and apparently healthcare costs money when you're a cultist in the 1920s

So I died destitute and alone in an alleyway while trying to translate a book of French poetry

Yeah. Others in the chat know I have a ton of stuff, and need to purge it, but I need places to organize the stuff I'm keeping. Plus I figure Ikea stuff will break down flat when I'm ready to move.

Of course now E3's starting up so my next few days are booked. If I'm gonna head to Chicago I should do it earlier than 4PM, I guess.

No no, you're right with AstroTurf, I just rarely see it laid out here aside from indoors

And yeah, it's generally not pleasant outside of, like, what the Blue Jays play on, which isn't the same kind of AstroTurf I suspect you got to enjoy

Hopefully it's nothing serious with your ankle and it heals up ASAP! :bro:
