the whole rancour around 76 seems to be around the Fallout setting losing its critical aspect in favor of relying on the strength of the face value of the aesthetic
and, guess what, that's what always happens
steampunk, cyberpunk, fantasy, sci-fi - it all gets reduced to the lowest common denominator so it'll sell better; whatever raw aspects there are for consumer engagement are exploited to the detriment of contemplative criticism
it all happened before, it'll all happen again, this was already the case with Fallout 3 and 4 even
the question is, can we do anything about it beside gripe? Like, can we force a change somehow, can we operationalize this very embittered Discourse into a constructive force?
if not, then why the hell do we bother, except to stew in our own indignation? what will come of this except further disillusionment that in the end does not impact either the substantive content of the product nor the bottom line of the business
Fallout 76 is going to be a gigantic game because most people don't care about engaging with a thing critically and just want something to mess around with their pals in after work
FO4 seemed to largely abandon the idea that the US was perpetually caught in a Red Scare mentality, which I thought was an interesting way to frame the old world, because it entirely makes sense. Pre-war was full of futuristic amenities, which tends to allow people to not notice humanitarian atrocities and harmful mentalities as they’re happening, but are extremely obvious in past-tense.

I'm going to play and probably enjoy The Division 2, because the first one was kind of a surprise hit in spite of a lot of things about its world and premise
But I won't pretend that running around my own ruined city won't be.... weird. Maybe I won't be able to handle it. Tensions are bad and weird enough in this town without having to fight my way through the streets

edit, some 15 minutes after the original post: this is hyperbole, as is discussed below. I felt like I had to clarify this in the original post because I absolutely agree if taken at face value it is an extremely bad opinion
So I'm guessing that From Software had to partner up with another game studio (Activision) just so they could figure out how to make their characters able to jump.
(I want this game injected into my veins btw).
Wait a second...this was during the MS conference. Does that mean Xbox gets a FROM exclusive?
Given what video game players on the internet are like, I'm really curious how you would go about justifying this particular take
Both the original statement, and this reply seem pretty arrogant.
It’s entirely possible to celebrate gameplay while mourning the narrative. It is in fact possible, and I would say advantageous, to be able to shift ones perspective in order to engage with something in a different way.
EDIT: I will say, that on a consumer level, this is one area where it might mean not playing a game you would otherwise enjoy, in order to vote with your dollar if you think the series is being taken in the wrong direction. Paying for a game is an implicit endorsement of the content, so if you value the themes and narratives over the gameplay, don’t buy it, even if you think you’d enjoy playing it.

That people will financially support games that they disagree with message wise because they are fun so games with bad messages keep getting made and propagating their message to the people that play them.
It basically means consumers aren’t leveraging their one way to influence the industry. So, yeah that doesn’t seem great to me. Though I wouldn’t call it the worst current things about games myself.

If one can pick up Division 1 on the cheap is it worth playing solo or nah?
I thought The Division is massively unfun solo, but that opinion isn't definitive.
I have about 400 hours in the division 99% of which was solo and I had plenty of fun. That's with the dlcs as well, 2 of which add some very solo friendly stuff

Honestly, I thought the core gameplay was enjoyable enough to carry me through playing basically solo up until the end of the "campaign" and a bit after, scrounging in the dark zone and making spur of the moment alliances with strangers. The enemies can be bullet-spongey unless you use the heavier hitting weapon types, but the use of cover and abilities/powers reminded me intensely of Mass Effect 3's multiplayer, and that plus some very satisfying sound design meant I had a lot of fun
But like every Tom Clancy game made after 2010 you basically have to tune out the extremely tone-deaf and politically ignorant story, and that can be difficult depending on who you are
Publishers don’t see “I bought this game just for the gameplay but I disagree deeply with its politics” they only see sales.
I mean, i’m definitely not trying to put any individual on blast for buying a game to have fun while disagreeing with its message. But at the same time I recognize the impact this can have on the industry as a whole.
Ultimately every individual just has to decide how to vote with their dollar and decide what hills they wanna die on.
MGSV had a lot of problems but at the end of the day forcing nuclear disarmament on others was a pretty fun gimmick that maybe some other games should try sometime
Why are we still here? Just to suffer? Every night, I can feel my leg… and my arm… even my fingers. The body I’ve lost, the comrades I’ve lost, won’t stop hurting… It’s like they’re all still there. You feel it, too, don’t you?

Suddenly really glad they were pulled off the FFVII Remake
The Division 2 looks like more Division, so I'm in.

No, it's on PS4 too, and I think PC
And if it does, I'll stop buying fallout games. Things change and sometimes they change in ways I won't like.
Which is a shame but hell, I have such limited free time these days that maybe it's for the best.

Because my grave isn't dug yet
Yea that would make me sad. I'd be done with the series which is always a shame when something you once greatly enjoyed is no longer available.
There's plenty of other games to play so it's not the end of the world obviously but that wouldn't stop it from being very disappointing.
This is An Extremely Bad Take

yeah that's hyperbole on my part, sorry
there are obviously much worse parts of Games and Gaming
but it's a part that bothers me greatly so I gave it that very strong emphasis

There is nothing wrong with being able to enjoy things and also be critical of their flaws.

Seems like Bethesda wants to focus on new settings and ideas for a while (online Fallout, Starfield) before going back to the familiar.
that's how capitalism gets ya
Even if 76 is a smash hit I doubt they ever stop making mainline Fall Out games.
They aim at different markets at a base level and they can likely release both styles without impact to the sales of either game.
I think there is a real reason 76 is being made as a spin off set before the main series timeline.
