Apropos of nothing, I feel like Karate Joe from Rhythm Heaven would work out really well as a Smash character. Each of his A moves would be multi-hit, but fail if not chained with the correct timing. And Rhythm Heaven has varied enough settings and characters to fill the B moves easily.

My favorite is actually the Kid Icarus: Uprising menu that you could rearrange at will, and I love the Brawl menu, but I concede that Smash 4 fell prey to there being so many features tucked away in so many weird nooks and crannies that it could be difficult to find what you were actually looking for.
I'm hoping that the story mode, or whatever they call it, is something like Melee's Adventure mode, but on a grander scale. I'd love some platforming/exploration stages based on the original Nintendo games, but bigger, and not in a set order. Imagine being able to choose which level to take on, with choices depending on how well you perform. Considering all the baddies featured so far, they could appear as bosses on each level.
They could also work in the Event Mode, with missions taking place within levels.

Ahh I've just realised Rathalos may not necessarily imply a single player story mode due to that stage not being selectable stage in Smash mode, as it could be the classic single player mode has boss battles in it.
Honestly, I'd rather this were the case. Subspace Emissary had great cutscenes and boss battles, but we've been getting that cutscene energy going towards promo videos this time just like Smash4. The actual subspace emissary stages weren't particularly interesting imo, which leaves boss battles...which I'll gladly welcome back.
It's true. IIRC, the novelty of SSE was seeing certain characters in other characters' games (i.e. running through a Zelda II labyrinth stage with Samus or whatever), but the stages were really limited in scope. I'd be down for a more traditional Classic Mode series of bosses.
Here's something that'd be super cool but will never happen: let us play through actual classic NES/SNES/etc. content with Smash characters that don't belong in that game. Like, give us a bit of the LoZ overworld or one dungeon or something, but you can do it with other Smash characters' movesets. Let us play F-Zero on SNES but with Sonic running. Let us play a boss battle from FFVII with Mario characters. Let us play Castlevania with Luigi. All with appropriate spritework, of course.
So what I'm hearing is that you want SNES Remix for Switch.

So, another fun bit of speculation fuel: around the time of the Smash Ballot, some number-crunchers over at SSB4Dojo.com took it upon themselves to track the results of multiple polls conducted by enthusiast groups around the web who were trying to get a feel for how people voted in the Smash Ballot. They've been keeping their records up-to-date on this spreadsheet, including coloring characters who have gotten into Ultimate as playable characters (green on the overall rankings) or explicitly not (red). It's a noisy measure, but the trends are really interesting to look at.
