Search isn’t working for me at the moment but I recall arguing that Chrom wouldn’t be in since he and Lucina are known to fight the same and they wouldn’t double-echo
But someone on reddit has pointed out that in palutena’s guidance for Robin, Chrom shows up and Viridi brings up that he’s too similar to Ike, and that there’s ‘no point in having two characters that are basically carbon copies’

He is very much like Ike in Fire Emblem Awakening, being slower and having his signature special move being Aether. Honestly, Lucina also uses Aether, but is faster and that's probably why she was a Marth echo...also the fact that she goes by Marth for a bit of Awakening anyway.
I don't know if we already know whether Daisy's down-B is going to be identical to Peach's, but if I had my druthers it would reference the Superball somehow. Initial press pulls one out, and when thrown it falls at a 45 degree angle and bounces around like in Super Mario Land.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
Anyone got any hopes for what new music will be added to the game? Because Nintendo have been putting out some real bangers with their recent titles. Here's some tracks I want to hear: (All under the spoiler)
Character gimmick idea for Simon Belmont: though it's obvious that his A-moves would involve whip strikes, what if the whip itself follows the Castlevania upgrade path as the moves get more powerful? As in, his jab uses the short whip, his tilts use the long/chain whip (I forget what the second stage actually is), and then his smashes use the ball and chain?
Needs more holding a whip out and just wiggling it around.
they can just steal the whip twirling tech from Sheik.

I'm guessing Smash was much too far along in development by the time the Mario + Cappy dynamic was really solidified for Odyssey. Something like adding the Cappy toss jump and bounce is probably pretty complicated. So I'm not surprised Mario is largely unchanged.
Cappy would be a cool DLC character though. He would basically be Mario with a full on Cappy based move set, plus some hijinx with capturing other fighters. Like you can't make them SD but you can make your rival hit themselves a couple times. Plus they get a mustache until they shake Cappy off.
So Rage Esports (who? I don't know either) recently had an event in Japan, and Nintendo brought the Smash Brothers Ultimate demo along. This channel has high-quality recordings of each match from the stream, though I didn't find them compiled into a readily-available playlist anywhere, so you'll have to settle for them being the most recent videos (as of this writing).
Something interesting from the Abadango vs. ??? match: apparently Ganoncide counts as a KO for both players if he gets hit in midair before the attack connects.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
Classic Castlevaina upgrades go from short leather whip > short ball and chain > long ball and chain. I recall one at least Game Boy game changed it up with an added projectile as the final upgrade, and I believe Bloodlines also changed it as well. Rondo of Blood and Dracula X didn't have upgrades and gave you the ball and chain from the start.
Don't forget Simon's Quest has a final flaming whip upgrade.
A Belmont would be bottom tier because they’d have no air maneuverability.
Richter has an uppercut special move that can be done infinitely in mid-air in SOTN on the PS1. Also a forward dashing special move that whirls the whip around him, which can be used as an air-dash (and interspersed with the uppercut).
So I just thought of a character who could be the obligatory 'Obscure retro character' for Ultimate.... Mike from Urban Champion. https://youtu.be/RPixc4qzg50
Yeah, the NES game isn't all that great, but it was the first proper 2d fighting game Nintendo made, and it does have a few elements which became standard in Smash. The goal in Urban Champion is to knock the enemy off the stage rather than KO him, there are stage hazards...
As far as movesets go, just make Mike an Echo Fighter for Mii Brawler, and he's good to go. A 3D rendition of the original game's setting (complete with manholes to spike opponents into) would make a great stage.
Anyone remember the time Konami once made their own Smash Bros clone with Simon Belmont, Snake, Bomberman, Optimus Prime, Megatron, and the Beyblade kid?
If they use Simon, I just hope to god they don't use the Chronicles design, with it's flowing red hair and fetish gear outfit.
The most recent Castlevania game, Grimoire of Souls on IOS, has Simon in his classic 'Conan' look, so maybe that's the one they'll use in future projects. https://youtu.be/jo2trokfDnw
Ultimately, I just can't pick any of the four core Castlevania subweapons to leave out of a potential Belmont moveset. I think, if Simon were to get in, it would have to be:
B: Knife
Side-B: Cross
Down-B: Holy Water
Up-B: Axe
Where the Axe, executed in the air, includes a third jump for extra height. Either that, or give Simon a giant tether recovery to account for having no third jump.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
You can get hands-on with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Mario Tennis Aces, to name a few. With all the big game reveals coming out of E3 2018, there may even be a few more surprises in the mix, too.
It's interesting that Geno from SMRPG was considered a few times and ultimately dropped both times. As a character Sakurai personally wants to add and his potential good showing in the Smash Ballot, I'd give him some pretty good odds of being in Ultimate. The fact that Nintendo and Squeenix have a good relationship again heightens those chances.
I think it’s pretty good odds on any character from For represented by a mii costume, since it’s recognition that they’re popular enough and they got the ok to put them in

Edit: my phone autocorrected Geno to Grbo. What?
Further points in favor:
1) Geno got a Mii Fighter costume DLC, which demonstrates that Nintendo was able to get the rights to the character to some degree.
2) The Mario RPG family tree still hasn't had much acknowledgement by Smash Brothers besides a stage on the 3DS. Though Paper Mario is the more line-of-sight pick, Geno probably had a stronger showing on the Smash Ballot and gets closer to the start of the history.

I mostly want Geno because I want to hear how one if my friends reacts. He's wanted Geno in Smash since Melee. I imagine his reaction would be a bit like mine when Ridley was announced.
Let's go ahead and look at characters that were only represented by Mii costumes:
Tails
Knuckles
(Mega Man) X
Zero
Mega Man.exe
Dunban (Zenoblade Chronicles)
Isabelle
Heihachi (Tekken)
Akira (Virtua Fighter)
Jacky (Virtua Fighter)
King K. Rool
Flying Man (Earthbound)
Chrom
Black Knight (Fire Emblem)
Lloyd (Tales of Symphonia)
K.K. Slider
Toad
Viridi (Kid Icarus)
Monster Hunter
Rathalos (Monster Hunter)
Chocobo
Geno
Takamaru (The Mysterious Murasame Castle)
Ashley (Warioware)
Gil (The Tower of Druaga)
A lot of these bits of DLC came out after the character survey, and I think Sakurai at some point said the DLC character costumes are an easy way to play as a character without having to make them. So, it's very possible some of these were from the survey.
Personally I suspect we can rule out most of the third-party characters, since that may have just been a way to humor the companies and make them some more money.
The ones that I think have the strongest chances are Isabelle (thanks to the extra HTML for the Animal Crossing page), K. Rool, Toad, Geno, Ashley (she's had multiple bits of music) and Takamaru (ditto). The other first-party ones are from series that already have adequate representation (Toad and Geno aside). But of course the Sakurai gotta Sakurai disclaimer applies.
Edit: Maybe not Takamaru, since they're going for worldwide appeal.
Takamaru is confirmed as an assist trophy, as seen during the e3 Invitational. I mean, he'll, that could be a fake out and I'd be fine if it was a fake out, but as of now he's for all intents and purposes confirmed as not being a newcomer.
So long as we get Captain Toad (which seems rather likely) then I'll have 2/3 of my most wanted characters in Smash this time around. If we are truly blessed by Sakurai and we get K. Rool, well, then I'll probably die of pure bliss and never be able to play the darn game.
If they use Simon, I just hope to god they don't use the Chronicles design, with it's flowing red hair and fetish gear outfit.

Yeah, that's spot on. I wish that wasn't a mobile gacha game, the art assets are really good.
If a Belmont does make it in, I hope one of his victory animations is him swinging the whip as he makes contact with a pulsating orb then freezing in place with his arm and whip still extended.
I kinda feel like Richter or Julius would fit more in Smash in terms of abilities to draw upon. They both have uppercuts for recovery, Richter has that weird sliding kick and that weird blade dash, whereas Julius has that even weirder slide. Both have super-items that would fit as Final Smashes very easily. Both of them could also pull ideas from the allies they have in their home games.

In path of radiance he was super fast, and in radiant dawn he was only outsped by sword Masters and the like. Doubling the black Knight was a given.
But yeah, now that he is established in smash, Chrom is closer to him than Lucina.

And they get into a confusing, fourth-wall breaking argument when they try to discuss each other.

I'm just saying, if they're planning on putting Simon in Smash, they've got something to build a foundation on.
Also, here's Simon's stage music from the game, it's pretty awesome.
