I still can't fucking believe Piranha Plant got in as a playable character. A Koopa Troopa I could maybe see, but a Piranha Plant?
This just has to be intentional trolling.
Of course it is trolling. See: Jigglypuff, Game & Watch, ROB, Duck Hunt
Jigglypuff was one of the most popular Pokémon at the time, and the others are homages to Nintendo's history (the Game & Watch handhelds, ROB, and the Light Zapper).
Piranha Plant is a minor enemy that's not even the most iconic from its series that they had to give feet to for it to even be able to move.
I'm not mad about it, but I can certainly see how other people who were really, really hoping for another character would be.
If we got another Mario series character I would have expected Toad before a usually immobile stage hazard. He certainly looks interesting to play, Sakurai sure knows how to create move sets out of the strangest things, but I don't think a single person would have ever thought to ask for Audrey II as a character.
It is amusing watching live reaction videos and people seeing Mario-related things and going "This is it, we are getting Geno, here we...wait, wtf?"
Given Nintendo’s weird stupid obsession with Peter Piranha I wouldn’t have been surprised if he got in, but just a Piranha Plant is a whole different level of weird.

You don't think Piranha Plant is an homage to Nintendo's history? C'mon. I'll admit that Koopa or Goomba would have been more iconic, but that's kind of splitting hairs. They probably just liked this moveset concept better. If one thing is clear, it's that the Smash roster is not a sorted list of characters in order of importance.
For Smash 64, the dark horse character was Ness. He was added before someone like Peach, Bowser, etc.

I still maintain that third party characters should be gaming icons. Noctis is like the least interesting FF protagonist to me, nobody has nostalgia for him.
But he also arguably has the coolest moveset. Warp Strike and the Armiger is cool as hell. He's in Tekken already, but I want him in SCVI and Smash.

Oh good, I'm not the only one who immediately went "Feed me, Seymour."
Over all I think I'm pretty happy with this. Not a 100% sold on the collectathon/power up/leveling spirits thing. I like most of it, especially the event match likeness. Just... Hrmm.
Oh, and if there's one other niggle, it's that a lot of the remixes sound a bit too busy? I like my tunes with a clear melody mainline to follow. Just preference, tho'.

It seems the spirit mode is replacing the event challenges, which I'm ok with.
The only thing that has me bummed out is the lack of trophies. I love those things. I really hope the spirits have the same amount of work put into their descriptions. It's basically a big museum of gaming history and I want to keep that around. On top of that, some of the descriptions are very charming and funny.
Sometimes I would kill time by looking at my trophies and soon become overwhelmed by how much text there was to read. So I'd just look at the trophies in list form. Grouped by series.
Given they talked about Xenoblade 2 being too early to make the roster when Ultimate was planned, (and giving away a free Rex costume) I'm betting Rex will be the first DLC fighter.
Outside of another Gen 7 Pokemon, I can't think of another recent character who's popular enough to warrant inclusion, so the rest could very well be some more highly requested favourites like Geno. It's everyone's game at this point.

Since Rex is a mii costume, I could see them pulling a Ness/Lucas and having Pyra as the playable character with her moveset being a composite of Xenoblade 2 attacks.
I'm fine with trophies being gone. After getting them in all of the other games I'd usually say "Neat!" and then never think about them again.
I was initially bummed but it looks like there’s a substantial single player mode. A lack of that kind of content really brought down Smash for Wii U. I didn’t get quite a few of the trophies because I got bored of the game. Solo modes are even more important to me this time since I’m not subscribing to Nintendo’s terrible online service.
So this smash direct thing is still going on right? Just curious as I'm waiting to see if the rumors of an N64 classic at the end are true and when it's scheduled to end. If preorders go up I want to make sure to get one in.
, and that there’s still no Actual Spectator Mode. Though maybe that battle arena thing will let you do it? I gotta watch it again~
ok i did watch it again and they point out that the players on the benches can indeed spectate, I know there was some worry with online tournaments that used to use a 3rd player who immediately self-ko'd to spectate with and with the new 1v1 damage being different people weren't sure if there would be some effect on the game
I wonder how many can join one battle arena at once, it seems to be at least 8

you should have known the Grinch leak was bullshit
No Chorus Kids, no Mach Rider, no Banjo Kazooie
Everything but Ken was a whole load of hooey.
One last thing needs to be said
Isaac and Shadow are both fucking dead
The plot of the next game should be the revenge of the assist trophies. They will do anything it takes to join the roster.
I'm still surprised how excited I am for Piranha Plant. Like, damn.
Make it Mog or Montblanc and we'll talk.
Maybe I should have added:
Shadow’s an assist trophy
Isaac’s one too

I pity the foo!
If we're gonna get another FF character I want Black Mage. (from FF1, not Vivi)

The Gamer's Club? They got rid of that back in August.

For some reason I still get the toys to life discount. Starlink was 20% off (before I returned it), the Amiibo are $13 instead of $16.
Then again, I also have a best buy credit card and rewards card. Dunno if that matters.
The boards of Spirit mode are basically the Smash 4 boards given reason and removing the mario party aspects.
