Piranha plant still seems waaaay more fun than either ken or incineroar though.
I'm actually kinda sad that they don't use any more out there Pokémon at all with there being so many.
Gamefreak prepares a list for Sakurai to pick from.
You know, it's been ages since I complained about "joke characters" in Smash Bros. in all seriousness, but I'm 99% sure there've been Piranha Plants with legs before (Petey Piranha aside), I just can't remember exactly in which game. So I wonder why they didn't just go with those?

So the main SP content for Ultimate is a big story mode where you run around rescuing all the Nintendo characters that got murdered? That sounds pretty substantial. I was going to wait and see, but I think I might get the game at launch. Also, lately fighting games have gone pretty crazy with the guest characters, so I'm excited to see who might show up as DLC (gimmie Lightning pls).
I would limit your expectations about the amount of story it's going to have, I expect it's mostly a hub for the "Spirits" event matches that's bookended by cinematics.
There were timers on the bounty board aspect of spirits, and then there was the overworld where you saw Rathalos, Lapras, the Great Fox, and other movement methods.
ZeRo's reaction to Piranha Plant was sheer disappointment and low-key anger. That alone makes me hope he's tip-top tier so that he either has to main them or has to play against them ALL THE TIME.

Kirby-games have always been on the easy side, in part because you're sometimes just allowed to do absurd things like flying above most of a stage, no questions asked, no conditions.

In the World of Light trailer there's a small nod to Kid Icarus Uprising. After Palutena gets dusted you see both Pits lose their power of flight and slow/stall out before getting dusted as well. Pit does not have full flight in Uprising, so Palutena temporarily grants him the power of flight for the flying rail shooter stages.
Well, two caveats.
One: Viridi can do it too
Two: Pitoo doesn't need the help iirc.
Pitoo didn't need the help because he had absorbed Pandora's power. When he loses that, he loses flight as well.
So if trophies are gone, then what do you get for completing Classic Mode and All Star Mode? (besides likely a character unlock and money for the shop) Does each character get their own Spirit, which can be used by any other character?
It makes me wonder that if every playable character can have a spirit, then maybe some of the spirits we've confirmed already, like Pyra, could still have a shot of being DLC.
The Final Update On The First (and Last) Penny-Arcade Smash 5 Roster Prediction Game Run by Kupi Before the Game Releases
I normally post the scoreboard in my updates here, but things are getting down to the wire. Most of the rankings have solidified, but first and second place is going to be determined by how many times first place blows itself up in the micropredictions! ... and I can't confirm a few of those until the game is actually released. So, I'm going to keep you all in suspense about how it turned out just a little longer. But I can share one factoid that I think will pull a grin out of y'all.
There is exactly one person capable of having a positive score. Everyone from second place on down can't get above 0, even if they get everything else right.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.

Since Tingle has been removed as an Assist Trophy, I think he has a pretty good chance of being one of the DLC characters, especially because we didn't get any new Zelda reps this time (unless you count Young Link).

Yep, that's exactly why I want Tingle to be DLC. So many delicious meltdowns á la "What the hell, they added Tingle instead of Banjo/Geno/Isaac/Waluigi/Goku/Sans?! Sakurai is worse than Hitler!"
Okay, since we're a month away from launch, it's time for some preliminary tournament rules.
These are not set in stone, and I want feedback from everyone so we get off to a good start.
Three stock
Eight minute time limit
Sets are best two out of three matches; finals are best of five
Items are off; spirits are banned
Final Smash bar is on
Miis are allowed, but must use the default size. All moves are legal, but you must commit to one moveset for the entire tournament.
Legal Stages:
Okay, so stage legality is a giant clusterfuck right now. With all the options available, it is incredibly hard to get a good grasp of what will be legal and counterpick. Here's the deal:
1. No stage morphing. While I'm sure there's plenty of perfectly viable combinations, it is an absolute headache to test every single one and likely to be ignored by most TOs. Just no.
2. Omega and Battlefield configurations are the exact same as Final Destination and Battlefield, so they all count as the equivalent stage. For example, banning FD bans all Omega stages.
3. Hazards may not be off by default. Stages like Lylat Cruise have been legal with Hazards on, so it's not a cut and dry thing. Each stage will have to be measured on a case-by-case basis, the only exception being stages with layouts that don't work regardless, such as any walkoff stages.
4. As always, players may opt to play their matches on illegal stages so long as both players agree to it. The sole exception are finals, because I imagine we'll have spectators who want to see somewhat serious games.
Set Order of Operations:
Characters are chosen via blind pick, so their opponent will not know which character they have selected.
First match is chosen via stage strike. Lower seeded players bans a stage, then the highest, then repeat this order until one stage remains.
The winner of the last match selects a stage to ban.
The loser selects a stage, so long as they haven't won on that stage before in this set.
The winner declares their character.
The loser selects theirs.
Repeat #3-#6 until a player has won two matches (three in finals)
Since Tingle has been removed as an Assist Trophy, I think he has a pretty good chance of being one of the DLC characters, especially because we didn't get any new Zelda reps this time (unless you count Young Link).

I understand their frustration to a certain extent. Its kind of hard to watch your dream character get sidelined by a potted plant.
Its the price we have to pay though. Each new Smash sequel comes with a blood pact where a spot will be sacrificed to whatever oddball character is striking Sakurai's fancy at the amount.
The only one I really have a problem with though is Wii Fit Trainer. Duck Hunt, Rob and Mr. Game & Watch are all pretty charming and I warmed up to PP almost immediately once the initial wtf wore off.
People play smash 4 at three stock for 8 minutes, and ultimate’s got bigger damage and more offense - I’m just assuming that guaranteed final smash use will speed it up more than zero

Nope, it's Sakurai 100%.

Being in a pot is what makes it funny though, and that's the version everybody knows.
Also, if you look real close, Smash Piranha Plant actually has little boots sticking out of the bottom of the flowerpot.

"...what? What's going on? Oh wait... WAIT WHAT? HE'S A FIGHTER WOOOOOOOO!"
Hmm.
I'll allow it!

Yeah, the hazard toggle gets REAL weird with some stages
I can confirm something incredibly important: they changed K. Rool's Final Smash so the damage is dealt when the laser hits DK Island, not before.
Over the 6-minute three stock match starting at 6:30, they final smash 4 times
