Born at the start of the 70s. The Apple ][ was my middle school days. Lived in Oregon. Not playing OT was not an option.
I didn't get on the internet until college, because there really wasn't an internet to get onto (outside of universities and defense contractors). I watched the web come into existence, from grey pages and B&W pictures and blue links, to Geocities and AltaVista and Yahoo, to URLs on billboards.
Still don't have a cellphone. I'm odd. (Also poor, and don't "roam" much.)
Related: I also remember seeing MSPaint in colour and being awed and spending so much time in it.
Anyway, the last two Fridays I have been able to stay after the managers’ meeting. All the managers head to a bikini bar to drink. I ordered a coffee and the barista argued me up to a mocha with a shot of Bailey’s.

is a bikini bar a bar where all the servers and tenders are in bikinis
In Taiwan they have this thing called betel nut. It’s a fruit with pinkish meat that comes wrapped in a pepper leaf and lime, as in the caustic, acidic powder.
Used to be you could buy this carcinogenic chewable from little stands that were entirely enclosed in glass from a young lady dressed in a bikini.
They recently made such establishments illegal and I am given to understand that betel nut consumption dropped off pretty good after they did so.
Upon reflection I’m not sure why I posted about this, other than the “bikini bar” thing reminded me they used to exist.
Although the wikipedia page implies that areca (betel) leaves can also cause oral cancer I have failed to find studies that make this specific link
Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.
Pretty sure betel nuts stain your teeth pretty bad. Or maybe I'm thinking of something else.
Betel leaves are great though. I can't find them here, which is a bummer because miang kam is a perfect summer snack.
It stains everything it touches and shitty old men leave their spittin’ cups Goddamn everywhere and so the road is often stained red where some toolbag left his trash and then a car ran over it.
We've had a weird network error recently where banks are inputting phone numbers for cardholders on their end, but for some reason our software isn't displaying them. This is only for a group of banks that have been added into our system in the last year so its some kind of software glitch, but until they figure it out our boss told us in these cases to try and look it up on Whitepages.com and if we can't find a number, note that in the email its not loading and we can't find it online.
This had led to a few heated...debates. Like my boss sending me a shitty email because I couldn't find a number when he could and me explaining that if you look at more then a few numbers in X amount of time their website just sends you to a page to sign up for their premium service and this is a really bad stop gap to just having the issue fixed. He said I was making things up because he didn't see that webpage so obviously I was lying to avoid having to spend 30 seconds typing a name into a website.
Well yesterday our sort of other boss (its not super clear!) emailed all of us Analysts saying "I saw you guys are telling our customers our system isn't working right and were using Whitepages.com? Why would you do that? Stop doing that immediately and stop even using that site its inaccurate and this was a bad idea whomever it was that started it should have gone to management and asked first.
But see, remember when I said our manager told us to do that?
@Liiya seeing you talk about your masters has got me thinking about doing one.
I graduated 9 years ago and I'm paying off my undergraduate student loan monthly. Am I right in thinking I could get another student loan to cover the tuition fee cost of the masters? I'd be doing it part time around my current work.
I assume you don't start paying back the masters loan until you've graduated?

You'd have to double check because we're on different systems for the undergrad by the sounds of it it, but yes your masters degree loan from the government is separate to your undergrad one.
For masters you get just over £10k which is in three instalments over the year if its a one year masters, and you start paying it back once you earn over £21k.
I wanted to double check before I told you so this is where I found my info https://www.gov.uk/masters-loan/repayment, here's the important bit regarding both loans:
How much you’ll repay
You’ll pay back 6% of your income over the minimum amount (‘threshold’). This is £21,000 a year, £1,750 a month or £404 a week.
Example
You earn £2,500 a month before tax. This is £750 over the monthly threshold. You’ll repay £45 (6% of this amount) each month.
You must repay any undergraduate student loans you have at the same time.
For my year doing my masters I have not been working so I've not had to pay anything, and I wasn't paying it back in my year of work between because I wasn't earning enough - again you're on a different plan to me I think for undergrad so not sure what your threshold to pay back is but essentially yes you pay both back at the same time.
Happy to answer anything else!
edit: As for part-time I'm not entirely sure how it works, but I've always found Student Finance England really nice to talk to and explain things to me over the phone.
Thanks mate, my undergraduate threshold is £15K and you've made me realise that because I'm working I'll probably start paying straight away.
I'll have a chat with student finance and see what they say. Of course I also need to find a masters qualification that will help me get a better job as well.
On the other hand, Games Workshop want a rule designer so I might just go for that, no experience required :P

Yeah I think you're right to only consider doing one if you knew it would significantly increase your prospects. For me it's been essential and hugely opened up my wage possibilities, but it's very specific circumstances.
So I didnt end up getting fired, yet at least its invevitable
Thats not really important cause im qutting and going to school for a year I guess.
I actually have no idea what im doing I just hate this job and im a useless worthless deadbeat, im a idiot so I dont even know if I can finish a year of school for a certificate and if its even worth it. Ill be applying whenever I actually get home but I have zero plan or ambition or anything really. I still live with my parents and they probably want me to stay working even during school which was part of the reason I dropped out 3 times already, that and im a moron.
I want out of here but I dont know where to go or what to do. This situation isnt like bad in any sense cause my parents are nice but im a disappointment to them but Im not like doomed or anything.
Im just to dumb and scared to well do anything, including the quitting this place which ive wanted to do for 2 months now.
Sorry, im just I dunno lost. Ill figure it out, I hope.

So apparently on top of the issues with my l5-s1, I've got severe snapping-hip syndrome. If I can rehab the fuck out of that, I might be ok with applying for the company leadership development scholarship.

firstly, you don't know what you can't do until you try it. secondly, what you can't do is as much about motivation as it is anything intrinsic: maybe this is the right time to go to school and maybe it's not, but if you can make a hard decision to prioritise your study, you'll get through it.
talk to your parents about it. at the very least, they're the people who'll be able to remind you that you're valued very much! it's hard to start the conversation, but it could be a conversation that lets you move forward with confidence and support
Got an interview request this afternoon. For tomorrow. In Heathrow
Why did you advertise your job as based in London when your fucking office is in Heathrow. I've not declined just yet (waiting to see what the salary range is for the role) but Jesus wept.
Be better at geography.
Edit: And they're not looking to match my current salary. Christ, who are they expecting to get if they're not willing to pay around £40k?

I have a full platoon of those metal models. Five ten man squads with special weapons and command squad. They are so good.
Plus the added benefit of being able to load them into a sock and do some major damage as an improvised weapon.

So I've never closely examined a map of the London area, but does London have the same deal as Los Angeles where there's a specific part that's Los Angeles but everybody calls a wider area by that name because of geography/artificial boundaries? Because it looks like the M25 ring road makes a border around "London."

There are a lot of bikini bars/coffee stands in the PNW, and I haven’t exactly been able to figure out why here, of all places
that was a surprising discovery
