Got an interview request this afternoon. For tomorrow. In Heathrow
Why did you advertise your job as based in London when your fucking office is in Heathrow. I've not declined just yet (waiting to see what the salary range is for the role) but Jesus wept.
Be better at geography.
So I've never closely examined a map of the London area, but does London have the same deal as Los Angeles where there's a specific part that's Los Angeles but everybody calls a wider area by that name because of geography/artificial boundaries? Because it looks like the M25 ring road makes a border around "London."
Pretty much.
There's London (which is the city proper) and Greater London which is the surrounding area (ringed by the M25.
That's my view of it. If someone said to me, "my job's in London" I assumed they worked somewhere central.
Well, there you go Karl, just get in your car and drive real far and you drive all night and then you see a light and it comes right down and lands on the ground and out comes a man from Mars and you try to run but he's got a gun and he shoots you dead and he eats your head and then you're in the man from Mars you go out at night eating cars you eat Cadillacs Lincolns too Mercuries and Subarus and you don't stop eating cars... And...
And that was IF all the public transport was running perfectly. No wonder they were so keen for an interview. Before they saw my current salary/salary expectation I must have looked amazing. Then I priced myself out of the job. But I'm not travelling the best part of 2 hours for a pay cut. That would be insanity.
It's the same thing with Boston. I've seen jobs in fricken Providence, RI advertised in "Boston".
just an easy 1.5 hour commute nbd.
At least there's a commuter train that goes directly between them...?
Yeah I got nothing, don't advertise jobs in Providence as being in Boston. I think once you've changed states you lose the ability to refer to the greater metro area just by the city name.
I'm starting to feel guilty I have a job lined up and my classmates don't. I know I got it because of my experience which was hard work, but I still feel guilty.

That's normal, you're worried they're going to struggle.

That's normal, you're worried they're going to struggle.
HOWEVER, you weren't handed a job, you earned it.
Thank you, Karl. You are right, it's definitely tricky not feeling like an arsehole !

The fact that you care about what happens to your classmates pretty much disqualifies you from being one of those.

Edit: And they're not looking to match my current salary. Christ, who are they expecting to get if they're not willing to pay around £40k?
Hahahaha fuuuuuuuuck working anywhere near Heathrow.
The public transport is shite and the roads are gridlocked daily.
The only redeeming part of working near Heathrow was getting to watch Concorde take off back in the day.

Oh nice. Target sent me a 15% off coupon on classroom supplies. That is nice.
What sucks is teachers needing to spend our own money on classroom supplies in the first place.
it really is one of our largest shames right behind "teachers get paid less than a shift manager at burger king"
I think I get paid more now than a shift manager at a BK. I have a Master's now though, and I don't know how much BK people make.
The shift manager (it was more of an assistant manager I guess) at the BK I worked at was making 31k. Store manager was making somewhere about 53k.
So I make more than a shift manager but less than a store manager even with my Master's.
We start our degreed librarians off at around $50000. Assuming you only get the minimum "meets expectations" merit raise of 2%, you'd break 54k in four years, and most folks hit the salary cap of 74k in 15-20 years, after which they take their merit raise as a lump sum rather than a cumulative percentage.

When I was working at child protective services as an investigator I made less than a shift manager at BK. You know, I am certain the BK guys earn their money and wish them nothing but the best. Still, I can't help but be really fucking pissed off at this new revelation. Fund the fucking government already!

What sucks about the current political landscape (especially in the US), is that everyone wants to cut taxes.
What SHOULD be happening is people should be discussing how much to raise taxes by, because in order to have an effective government you need to tax people... but mostly rich people and large corporations. What IS happening is politicians are running and winning based on how much they can cut your taxes, and especially the taxes on corporations and rich folks, because that has come to mean "job growth".
Someone somewhere needs to start a #TaxMe movement, honestly...

> 1 hr travel time would have me looking into pilot's license or something jesus
fly into the local airport and ride a bike to work or some stupid BS
My dad did the 1.5h Poughkeepsie->NYC commute for the better part of two decades. And funnily enough he was a pilot then, but I doubt there were convenient spots to land a dinky private Cessna near Rock Center :P

Poughkeepsie to nyc? Probably could rent a hanger at laguardia and take a taxi if you hate yourself.
not a doctor, not a lawyer, examples I use may not be fully researched so don't take out of context plz, don't @ me

Well that right there is your problem.

Unconsidered downside of moving: this older couple in the alley behind my building haslike, 20 birds they shuttle in and out of their house every day and if you whistle at one it sets off a wonderful, lovely chain reaction of gentle tweets and it feels real good to be going to breakfast and being serenaded by these lovely birds.
I sure as shit am glad to be moving, but damned if there ain’t some shit about this place I will miss.

Given that actual nature conservation jobs in this country are like diamond-crusted unicorn poop and I don't have any UK-relevant experience, I've decided to look into becoming a professional gardener/groundskeeper. On the grounds (heh) that a) I will be working outdoors with plants and stuff, b) there are way more jobs available because a lot of English people are crazy for their gardens, and c) I can probably use the experience if a conservation job does come up.
Signed up to a correspondence course in horticulture from the RHS. And tomorrow I'm going to start volunteering at a conservation-focused tree nursery. Which is good because while I've been enjoying all this free time to play Cities Skylines I am going a bit mental at the same time.

"Oh it's just a tube to Heathrow then a bus"
Heathrow is on the end of the Picadilly line. That journey alone will be the best part of an hour depending on where you live.
I wish requiring that much education required a 6 figure payout TBH.
I can't even imagine a 6 figure payout. I could live like a king for that!

JFK would add another 40-60 minutes to your commute to midtown, laguardia is shorter.
hahahaha what the fuck
This is true, but have you considered the long-term health benefits of routinely being on the Piccadilly Line to Cockfosters?
