I bet this is what happens with Star Citizen:
eventually, they're going to go long enough without having anything to show for it that Chris Roberts gets approached by some publisher or other and they buy everything outright, like what happened with Duke Nukem Forever
but then they'll discover that it doesn't actually amount to all that much, and there's no way to release a game that can recoup the acquisition costs and please all the backers without needing a bunch of (competent) devtime
so they'll just do the best they can in like a year and release a game that doesn't really make much of an impression other than "was this really what we waited for", again, much like DNF
where this story is different from DNF is what happens to Chris Roberts, who will successfully try to claim that the real reason Star Citizen sucked is because EA or Ubisoft or whoever fucked it up, now check out this new thing I'm kickstarting....

I believe Star Citizen will come out eventually in some form, particularly its single player components
It will just be buggy as hell and poorly optimized and only really impressive as a graphical and technical showcase. All the minutiae that folks were impressed by will amount to nothing, a massive list of features won't have made it into the game. It will still be played by a small die hard community that will produce some pretty impressive stories and youtube videos in the EVE Online tradition, while the rest will attempt to bring about some kind of class action suit that likely won't go anywhere but will get plenty of publicity and prevent Chris Roberts from making a video game ever again
That's my prediction and I don't think I'm exactly going out on a limb

I dunno what a publisher would stand to gain from buying Star Citizen. None of the tech seems to be particularly noteworthy, and while there's a potential userbase, most of them have already put in their money, so you'd need to either keep making promises of additional pointless features to get even more donations, or hope you can put enough of something together from what Roberts left behind that you can expand that audience

Jeff and Brad admitted to knowing the Smash Ultimate announcement was all the characters, so they still have contacts.
That said, they wanted little vignettes of each character being revealed. Given that Nintendo did that, on their website, and it's 30 minutes long.. I doubt they really wanted that!
a lot of what they did show during the direct were basically a few of the clips on the site I think, so apparently that isn't what they meant by "little vignettes for all the characters"
maybe they wanted something more skit-like and less "here's a few short clips of gameplay"

You mean like the Ridley introduction cinematic?

Yeah, in general. But I don't go to Giant Bomb for Nintendo commentary... Though I do agree it was a bit weak.

yeah I'm guessing they wanted more bits like that, but I'm speculating on their vague statements pretty hard

My biggest takeaway from Star Citizen so far, regardless of whether it turns out well or not is I hope developers learn an important lesson from its development
and that lesson is
yes, there is such a thing as too much transparency. Like, for all of the actual legitimate issues people have with the development process, a lot of the complaints have demonstrated pretty strongly to me that a lot of people don't understand how game development works, don't want to understand, and get very mad about thing due to their lack of understanding.
And I don't want this post to come off as sounding as though I think everyone with criticisms falls into this camp, I don't. I can absolutely see the arguments behind a lot of the people who take issue with the game, even I don't agree with a lot of it. But there's also a ton of stuff that justifies at least some amount of opaqueness in the development process because there's a legion of people out there ready to bitch about anything and everything, and more information is just more ammunition to complain about.

They showed the direct early for press the day before. Giantbomb probably didn't go, but Waypoint did.

Don't think too much transparency is the problem with star citizen
Given that it's less a game and more of a money laundering operation
