depends how filthy your pets are, I guess. Ours aren't supposed to be on the furniture because they have two walks a day and unless they've just had a bath, they're likely to have dirty paws. (We do wipe their legs and paws down if it's muddy out, but not in general). I'd rather not wash sheets every single day.
... not that this stops Uschi sneaking into bed when he thinks you're not looking.
Ive never had any say in the matter my dogs just tend to sleep wherever they want and sometimes where Im sleeping overlaps with that.
I could see it being gross in the days before flea control I guess

Rex is a short-haired dog, and we keep a damp towel near the door to wipe his paws after every walk, so I'm not bothered by it. He sleeps on the bed a lot of the time.
I guess I could see it if you've got a longhaired dog that just loves rolling around in dirt, though.
Everything looks beautiful when you're young and pretty

yeah ours can pick up a startling amount of grime very quickly. If I know Usch is clean and he's really being annoying I'll let him sleep on the bed in the mornings, because he's a spoilt child. Mabel has always been forbidden from furniture and is horrified at the thought.
Of course the secondary problem is that you quickly realise a 40kg Berner can take up a surprising amount of space. They would find that horse unusually self-contained.
We have one cat that usually lays on my ankle, another that lays next to the first one, and a third that I'll randomly wake up to find pushing his back paws into my ribcage. The hair is everywhere but it's just easier this way.

Also a lot of the bigger dogs are just drool factories, and of course if they get fleas you'll be very annoyed until they're gone.
Didn't stop me from letting any of mine that want it on the bed. (One just refused to get on the bed at all, ever)

My most sheddy dog likes to nap on my pillow, so I have to keep my pillow out of reach until I'm ready to use it myself, at which point she moves to the nearby couch for the rest of the night because she likes her alone time. My little dog curls up between my legs at first then moves to the side when she gets too hot.
Things get complicated when my brother's or sister's dogs spend the night, there's a specific social hierarchy that must be observed.
Watching your neighbours bichon frise is a different experience. Whenever it was muddy the dogs were distraught if we didn't use a towel to clean them the minute they got inside. They just went over to the towel, then it was rubbing time until clean and only then would they leave the hallway. Usually to sit in a corner of the kitchen until completely dry, then snuggle up to someone on the couch or carpet.

I've never let my dogs under the covers, but, on the bed is okay to me and not really any grosser than them being anywhere else in the house?

My friend had a dog just like this that loved to dig and there's a real easy trick this guy coulda used.
We would literally just pick him up and turn him and he'd just carry on in that direction digging away
now I'm thinking about bat milk
Not sure how well a vacuum cleaner that makes its own mess first will sell.
