I always loved the opening paragraph of The War of the Worlds
I'm phone posting so I can't go and find it, but it was my introduction to the idea of cosmic horror
Just the first sentence is really pretty fantastic:
"No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water."
And the rest of the opening paragraph, because why not: "With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter. It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same. No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable. It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days. At most terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise. Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. And early in the twentieth century came the great disillusionment."

Hot take: “Rated ‘E’ for Everyone” was a pretty solid joke.
It was very, very, very Shane Black.
"A new take on the epic fantasy genre... Darkly comic, relatable characters... twisted storyline."

Ant Man is on telly so we're watching it. I can't tell if it's the movie or Channel 7 have done something strange, but everyone looks dry. I know that sounds crazy, but it's the only way I can think of to describe it. Shit is dessicated!
Not just crusty-ass old-ass dusty-ass cryptkeeper Michael Douglas, but even Evangeline Lilly looks like her face is made out of very smooth papier mache.

One of my favorite first lines is the opening of The Hunter by Donald Westlake
“When a fresh-faced guy in a Chevy offered him a lift, Parker told him to go to hell.”
Ronan would play the protagonist Jo, Stone would portray Meg, Streep would play Marmee, Chalamet would play Laurie Laurence, and [Florence] Pugh would play Amy. Sources tell Variety the studio is expected to test a handful of actresses opposite Stone before the July 4 holiday for the role of Beth.

Tessa Thompson and Janelle Monae have confirmed they are in a relationship and that's just the best thing.
I thought Split was dogshit but fuck it, I've been waiting for the sequel to Unbreakable ever since release.

The idea of a completely stealth sequel to another film is just too fucking cool, so regardless of how much I liked Split, the idea got me super excited for this.

I thought signs was a pretty good movie about a topic I find to be profoundly silly

I liked Signs, it has some effective spoops, but also has a fair amount of silliness.

it has probably my favorite visual joke in any of his movies I've seen
say what you will about Shyamalan, he's got an eye for a good sight gag
(this is why I thought he was actually a pretty good choice for the TLA movie but then uh...well I don't think we need to say anything more about that, do we)

Man I remember the rumors that Life was going to be a stealth prequel to a movie. Venom was bandied about a lot on it too.
Signs will forever be burned in my periphery because of that fucking English 101 class in college where the professor made us write essays on how Signs was a modern day retelling of The Wizard of Oz (you were not allowed to write your essay arguing that in fact the opposite was true).

I still think they had some screws loose.
yeah that sounds like somebody two steps away from hanging out on a street corner with a billboard.

That sounds like if Shyamalan himself had said "This is not a modern day retelling of Wizard of Oz," said professor would still have believed it to be the case.

If the opposite was true does that mean wizard of oz was a olden time version of signs

I usually like her in movies and I can't think of the last time I saw her.
EDIT: looks like she stopped acting when she had her first child. Didn't show up in anything between 2009 and 2015.

There were a bunch of teens in the audience which didn't help things a whole lot
BUT that was still a fucking film and a half, jesus christ
it was pretty phenomenal

I still haven't seen either Split or The Visit because no one can trick me into seeing an M. Night Shymalan movie anymore
But I'll see that one because Unbreakable is his best movie even if parts of it haven't aged well
