A shiny new [tech] thread that will be obsolete in 6 months.
The tech thread has been gone for a little while so I figured I'd revive it. Talk about all those shiny gadgets that rule our lives in here.
I am fed up with the lack of headphone jack/USB-C adapter issues I'm having with my Pixel 2 and I think I'm going to swap it for something else next week. I am trying to decide between the Galaxy S9+ and the LG G7 ThinQ. The S9+ is arguably the better all around phone, but the LG has a better headphone DAC, which given my reason for switching seems like a big reason to pick the phone.

I have a Samsung Gear S2 3g version and it seems like it would fit your bill. I bought it refurbished and it works great. It has WiFi and it can have a separate phone line added so you don't even need your phone. However it can only use the Samsung watch straps. The battery life is ok, definitely have to charge it every day though. I am not sure if that is because mine is used though. Mine was 120 which is not really cheap, but is cheap for a smartwatch. The price on the Gear S3 will also probably drop soon since the S4 is coming out.

Best advice is if you can get the same brand as your phone. The feature compatibility is apparently very worth it.
Although we bought my mom an Asus Zenwatch 2 for her iPhone and she loves it. So definitely I'd recommend that one. And I know you don't have to be super close to your phone to use it because a few days after she got it she tried to answer a call on it and her phone was upstairs (it doesn't have speaker/mic), but it still had enough signal to notify her of the call!
Get a Nokia, my 8 is fucking great. If you have to have a "flagship" phone to compete with the latest hotness from the big two, go with the 8 Scirocco.
Current Nokia phones aren't compatible with Verizon afaik.
I need to start walking again and my current phone has no pedometer and that feature really motivated me on my s7.
I miss the s health app actually. it was really really cool for measuring stuff about your walking (or running or biking)
I might jump back on the Samsung train when this phone is paid off and can pop another on my bill.
I have a misfit, which kind of occupies a similar niche? but I suspect the pebble was probably better hardware (I went with misfit purely because it was cheaper and I liked the aesthetic). It is very watch-like, though.
I also wouldn't mind something in that middle ground between smart watch and fitness tracker - just something that can do a GPS track and maybe has a bit of memory for bluetooth music without me having to haul my phone with me on a run - but right now there isn't much that quite fits the bill.
No chance you have the misfit phase? That looks...good enough. I can live with a color to tell me which app buzzed me, if it saves 100+ to not have a screen. (also to not have a huge or square face) Is the battery life at all what they claim? Kind of a bummer to buy batteries but oh well.
I have a 2nd gen iPad that still works okay for internet browsing.
nah I've just got the Shine 2. I've been debating upgrading but I'm kind of hanging out to see if anything else comes on the market that covers a few more features without being $Texas.
The battery life on the shine is not quite as good as they estimate (I think their averages are based on a bunch of fairly sedentary people) but I can usually get a month or two out of one, and if I bitch about it they tend to send me free ones. My sister has one of the swim-specialised ones and she says the lap tracking is much better than the fitbit, if that's at all relevant.
That said, having to actually put batteries in at all definitely gets old, I'd much rather something I can charge even if i have to do that more often.
yeah this is second gen, I use it mostly as a reference screen for art but it's running everything very nicely. I'm just pleasantly suprised
God, the whole segregated phone networks thing in the US is a complete shitshow.
I’m feeling a bit guilty now because holy crap these things are expensive. So I’ve decided I want to start making use of my phone a lot more to try and ease that guilt a bit.
Anyone got any good recs for apps you find particularly useful/enjoyable?

I keep reading stories like this and wonder how these programmers make so much more than me. Maybe because they lack scruples?
How do you know they're paid more than you? Because the way I figure it, they may be getting more now, but soon they'll be paid much, much less.
Two Dots is my longest-installed mobile game ever, and Pocket Casts is where I get my podcasts. Just about all my other apps are social stuff or specific-use that probably wouldn’t help you.
-Super Hexagon for getting really mad in less than a minute, over and over again.
-Fuelio to track money going into your car, from gas to insurance to repairs, and everything in between.
-theScore to keep track of whatever sports team(s) (or events like the World Cup/Olympics) you fancy.
-Reddit, because even scrolling through 'Popular' without an account can fill some time if you're bored.
-SleepBot to track sleep, if that's something you want to get a handle on. Though Apple probably has something that covers that built-in.
mmmm yes.
The take more photos of your dog app.
Satans..... hints.....
Here reading the comments actually enhances the story. You can apparently also use a go pro mount/suction cup to take off the rear casing of the lock and just unscrew it.

At this point I am pretty religious in my preference for T-Mobile because I can even import non-USA phones if I like, so long as they have the correct GSM bands (it is rare that they do not)
Honestly the situation with segregated carriers in Japan is p gnarly sometimes too
I've never been so jealous of a project
Notepad++ or Sublime Text.
VStudio Code might work too.
UltraEdit if you're an old person.
scummy in that they don't pay the people for music, or in other ways? i'm mostly looking for a music discovery engine because i just listen to the same crap over and over.
Spotify(premium at least) tries but it's often weird about what it chooses in its Discover Weekly playlists, although it's been getting better and the recommended songs for a given playlist are pretty good (for the genres I listen to).
Scummy as in "congrats, you just passed 5 million plays, here's your 37 cents revenue from that!"
If you have Amazon Prime I recommend Prime Music. It's free (well, included with Prime) and pretty decent.
