So my work Surface Pro 4 was getting weird. I checked the updates and it told me that vital updates were needed but that none were available. Asked out BTS and he said that the district update server have been broken for a while. Since I have admin on this computer I had it check microsoft for the updates instead. It pulled down about two or three dozen.

It seems to be working much better now.

Anybody have a recommendation for password managers that sync well between Windows & Android? I've been using an older version of 1Password for many years but now the mobile app refuses to sync and wants to convert the password chain over to a new format, which I am not sure the Windows version I have will support.

I could just upgrade, but they've moved to a subscription model which while fine I'd rather not get locked into.

KeePass using Dropbox is my weapon of choice in the fight against the account horde. It works great for my, although a lot of my accounts are saved in Chrome as well which minimizes hour often I actually need to use it.

I converted the password chain to the new format, it's working fine for me - is there a reason you dont want to upgrade the client? If it's the existing one, it doesnt force you to switch to subscription.

I was under the assumption you had to pay for newer versions of 1Password, which at this point I figured would lock you into the subscription model. I'm on some 3.x version circa 2014, I think. Mea culpa, I haven't done all the research on it yet and figured I'd see if anyone had any recommendations for alternatives which I could fall back on if need be.

Ah okay. It's possible they've changed something recently, to be fair I haven't looked into it recently either! But for my part I've been installing updates whenever their desktop client tells me to and it hasn't asked me to pay more money yet.

So it's about fourth or fifth on my priorities list for when I get back to the USA next summer, after renting an apartment, purchasing a reliable vehicle, and securing a fulltime job, but I'm finally budgeting out for a desktop PC and associated workstation as a present for myself once all the other more necessary things fall in line. I've decided my 2013 Lenovo laptop is still 100% worth it as a general use machine, especially with some overdue RAM and Wi-fi card maintenance, but after six years without a desktop PC it'll be worth the investment.

Gonna aim for all AMD, and specs that make for competent framerates at 1440p. I don't need a massive graphics monster that crushes everything on Ultra, but I haven't been able to reliably run anything more intense than Warframe in years so I'm looking forward to seeing The Witcher 3 for the first time, and actually being able to play Doom and Wolfenstein without major slowdown. AMD will make for a good general use workstation, too, plus it opens up the capacity for a Freesync monitor and those are super cool. I'll be curious to see if there's a RX 680 or a follow-up to Vega out by Q3 2019. If not I'm probably going 2600x/x470/RX580.

i can say the threadripper is phenomenal. i feel like I have 10x more CPU than I need now

no comment on the ATI cards... but the CPU is godlike

Honestly, there is no good reason to consider any AMD graphics cards. They use more power, output more heat, perform worse, and cost more than the comparable Nvidia card. Their CPUs are phenomenal right now but I wouldn't hold out any hope for a similar resurgence for their graphics cards. AMD has total dominance in the console GPU market (and good APU CPU/chipsets) so it's possible they don't see a great need to try and compete in Nvidia in that market anymore.

There should be a new series of graphics cards out from AMD before Q3 2019, at least the first line of Navi chips.

You'll also have the Zen 2 CPUs out by then which promise another big jump in performance like was seen between Zen 1 ( Ryzen 1X00 series) and Zen 1+ (Ryzen 2X00 series).

Yep, this is all true. AMD GPUs right now are a bad choice for anyone building a new desktop. Worse performance, more heat, and worse price-to-performance ratio. Unless you only plan to play Ashes of the Singularity.

Ryzen and Threadripper CPUs are phenomenal values, on the other hand. But don't go giving AMD money for a GPU. They just don't really give a shit about that market right now.

    I have a few reasons:
    1) Nvidia has awful business practices especially after RTX, and supporting the underdog feels nice
    2) Mining had inflated AMD costs because their chips were outright better for that, but now the mining boom is finally dying so the cards are returning to MSRP and should be stable by the time this build is a thing, meaning they'll finally be at the promised value for money
    3) AMD is working on heat and power consumption with their next gen graphics chips, and honestly even if I do get a current chip in nine/ten months, this is what Sapphire custom cards and/or waterblocks are for
    4) Vulkan! And really most engines besides Unreal. With more consoles getting AMD cards, I suspect the performance parity will only continue to get better
    5) Freesync!
    6) My last gaming rig, nine years ago, had ATI cards and I loved that thing. Nostalgia!

  • minor incidentminor incident expert in a dying field njRegistered User regular
It's been a looooong time since anyone bought AMD cards for mining. That's been 90% NVIDIA for the last year or so*, and with the RTX launch, you'll start to see cards like the 1060 start dropping in price way more than the 580.

If you're not pulling the trigger soon, it's worth waiting to see what the next gen AMD cards offer for sure, but the current gen stuff just doesn't offer anything compelling if they decide to focus on gaming again. Right now they're pretty narrowly focusing their attention, R&D, and marketing budget on the creative professional market. It's working reasonably well for them, so I don't see it changing in the immediate future, but who knows. My suspicion is that if anything they'll try to get a bigger piece of the low end gaming market, since NVIDIA is pricing relatively high this gen.

Yeah I'm banking on the next batch of AMD GPUs being extremely solid mid-end units, and capitalizing on filling out a mid-market niche that's been under-served recently now that the 1060 and 580 are getting really long in the tooth, making for the unicorn of a card that's capable of running anything I ever need for a while and also not breaking the bank. RTX has shown that Nvidia's priorities this gen are a little far out from my needs, let alone their price tags

We're already at the point where a $250 CPU is increasingly "future-proof", and I'm guessing they'll hit that figure very soon with GPUs. The GTX 1080ti is already basically there, at a price, but if a mid-end card can do 1080p/1440p about as smoothly with less power draw it's a no-brainer

I fully realize anything next gen *and* mid-end for both brands is almost entirely speculative, but the market trends are better than they've been in years, and I have at least ten months to watch and see if I'm right about my optimism towards Team Red. With the mining boom collapsing, and hardware hitting a point where a mid-market rig is increasingly viable for long term "future-proofing", everyone wins!

Yeah, I have a Ryzen 5 2600 and a GTX 1070 Ti and that combo allows me to play basically everything at 1080p 120Hz and max settings without a problem.

The RTX cards are not a good value proposition and that'll keep the GTX 10X0 line from dropping in price too much. The RTX 2080 trades with the 1080 Ti in gaming benchmarks but the 1080 Ti can often be found for $150-200 less, and it's not like the ray tracing stuff is actually important right now. By the time it's really implemented there'll be a whole new generation of cards to buy.

How come you went Ryzen 5 over Intel?

  • jgeisjgeis Registered User regular
The Ryzen just seemed like a better value proposition (I got the 2600 very cheap), and I do a lot of non-gaming stuff as well that'll help leverage all those cores/threads. I don't really feel like Intel has much to offer since I'm not chasing the absolute highest FPS or playing at a very high resolution where a couple of extra FPS could matter. Plus I don't really feel like giving Intel my money.

Not really. They already have been dropping, and we're expecting another round of small price drops on the 1060 and 1070 soon. They're not going to bottom out to dirt cheap or anything, because that never happens, but they're going to creep down a bit more until inventory is gone, and then they'll start climbing again.

If you have a dedicated GPU, I'd say go for a Ryzen 5 2600 and a B450 motherboard. Should put you between $250-275 and it gives you an upgrade route since Zen 2 CPUs will be able to use the B450 motherboard (likely after a BIOS flash).
