Indeed. Stuff like pop-in and slowdown doesnt really bother me at all. Like I said before, Ive played games on my PC that were horrendously slow and kept going despite that so I dont really care.
QFT and stuffs.
I've don't even notice the pop-in stuff, unless I'm looking for it.
The only time I really even noticed it was when a character from one of the big races (the rhino-looking guys with fish tales). His body was taking up the entire screen, and loaded as a dull texture.
I guess I've been playing MMOs and other PC games too long. I basically expect that kind of stuff to happen, and it doesn't bother me.
The only loading/slow down I don't really like is the starburst looking thing you have to stare out before each battle. But it's far from horrid.
The Union stuff is very cool, and I haven't even gotten to where I can recruit non-Leaders.
The weapon-upgrade and monster-capture stuff is kind of interesting too.
What I don't quite understand is some of the description stuff for the special attacks. Like Omnistrike says something like "modifier: Godly Maul" . What does that mean? It does Maul/hammer damage? If I use a Maul/hammer it'll do more damage?
I also wish it would let you select what mystic or combat arts you use in battle. It's almost like a random selection. Unless I'm missing something.
But basically, I'm having a lot of fun and am really enjoying the game.
That Rhino race is the "Yama", lol. Anyway I agree with your post!
That Rhino race is the "Yama", lol. Anyway I agree with your post!
Heh, all the races have goofy names I can't really remember.
It's basically: human. Short guys. Big guys. Four-armed guys.
And I just watched the GT review. That was a much fairer review I think, as it didn't overly focus on the technical glitches like some of the others.
Also, from reading some other stuff apparently non-HD TVs don't show the game very well, like some text is basically illegible. Like item descriptions other some other smaller text.
I also saw in the GT review that you can turn off the "critical attack" thing where you are prompted to push a random button during an attack. I kind of like that feature. It at least keeps me from putting down the controller after issuing the Union Commands. Makes me feel like I'm involved a bit.
And, I saw some of the monsters and Guest Unions doing a "Reassess" thing while fighting. Can I do that? It seemed kind of handy. I was wondering if that happens from the "Play it by ear" command, which I actually haven't used yet.
http://gamersyde.com/news_7346_en.html
Theres the usual first 10 min on gamersyde. Gives you an idea of what kind of slowdown and popin you are looking at.
Nothing to really cry about IMO.
I didn't see much slowdown that bothered me. And jeez, I was expecting only ten minutes. It's actually the first 40 minutes in four 10 minute parts. Now I'm even more excited to play the game.

Saw the GT review too, think I'll wait for the PC version, which hopefully will be smoother. The slow down isn't too bad, but the frequency of it looks to be really annoying. Otherwise the game looks fun. The battle transitions in the video are quick, hopefully they stay that way. Previous videos show the attack animations take about 6 seconds to do a normal swing, which is just silly.

I'm just playing some gears and afterwards I will write a rather lengthy post and answer all the question that popped up.
And Yama are not "rhino" people, they are fucking FISH. Seriously, they have fish tails, NO HORNS and gills.
Saw the GT review too, think I'll wait for the PC version, which hopefully will be smoother.
Is there supposed to be PC version? I know there is going to be a PS3 version at some point, but I hadn't heard anything about a PC version.
And Yama are not "rhino" people, they are fucking FISH. Seriously, they have fish tails, NO HORNS and gills.
Yeah, yeah, whatever .
I think it was just that when I first looked at them I didn't see the tail. They have a bump on their snout (which resembles a dull horn), and they're big and gray. That says "rhino" to me.
When I saw the tail, I was like "holy crap, they're fish". Which is why I call them rhino-fish people .
They actually have gills too? I hadn't looked closely enough to see those.
After hearing the thrashing of Infinite Undiscovery (which I was looking forward to but didn't pick up) and then expecting the same for The Last Remnant because review scores weren't great, I wasn't going to pick this up either.

Okay, now I'm torn, because both are low cost on Amazon now, but not low enough to pick em both up at once. So here's my choice. For those of you that have played both now, which should I pick up first, this? Or Infinite Undiscovery? Which is worth getting into first?

LR is better than IU. IU is a good game, but LR beats it hands down, especially in presentation, story and chracters.
If I am able to obtain later today (Im hoping) Ill let you know. Of course if thats the case Ill not have played it WITHOUT the HDD install making my comment useless and therefore I am done now.

Has anyone tried installing this to the hard drive yet? I wonder how much it helps
I did, it reduces the load times immensely and you should definitely do it.
it also reduces the texture pop-in to barely noticable.
it does NOT help with the framerate though, that poor thing is AWOL.
Seriously people, read the thread from page 3 onward, I pretty much answered everything :P
Also, good god this game can be so brutal but then beautiful.
I just continued the story a bit (game is way way way too big,so much to do aaargh) and can now have more people in battle. So I've changed my unions a bit and created a third one. Wanting to test that out I decide to head to one of the starting areas and kill some mobs.
Lo and behold, there are new mobs everywhere! Thinking "well, I just breezed through those story fights cause I'm already Battle Rank 36, these guys should be a pushover" I decide to pull three of them at once.
Let me say, there was rape. And I wasn't giving it out. At the end, I managed to barely win the fight with Rush's troop still alive with like 200hp. It was a monster of a battle and a glorious thing to win at the end.
Rush and two soldiers learned a new skill each and I gained a new Battle Rank.
What about the dead people? I know people get full health after battle but do dead people just...come back? Or were you basically fucked afterward and had to head back to town to recruit people?

Everyone just comes back. The game also always says either "KO" or "incapacitated" when a Union gets defeated. Monster son the other hand are "terminated". So basically, your guys never die.
The game would be fucking crazy if people could perma die.

FUCKING impossibly CRAZY.
Hah yeah thats what I was hoping. Because imagine being deep down in a dungeon and getting into the fight of your life only to have everyone but like...two people killed off right before the boss or something? God Id be pissed.

So tell me, do the battles feel more like regular JRPG battles or more like SRPG battles?
From looking at them in some ways they are similar to SRPGs but others they're more like turn based. Does it feel more like one or the other or maybe some sort of amalgamation of the two?

So, how much does this take via hard drive install?
Watching the Gamersyde first 10 mins, for a first try on an non in-house engine, SE got up to speed pretty quickly with the UE3 tools, with the cutscenes anyway. The animations are pretty good.

@Schide: The battles feel more like standard JRPG, but the party management feels more like an SRPG.
@Zen: Each disc takes about 6GB. You can install both if you want to,but that would be kinda useless since you're only ever gonna play one disc at a time.
Just install Disc 1, play through, then when it wants Disc 2 you just delete Disc 1 and install Disc 2. Not a big deal really and since your HDD can't be smaller than mine (20gb, 13 of those I can use) you should be able to fit it on there.

I'm trying here to figure out exactly how to ask this question. Story, gameplay, all that. What other JRPG would you compare it the most to. I must admit to only scanning the thread here and there, and it's left me with a very erratic picture of what the game is like. For some reason now, my impression has kind of strayed from FFT, and moved more towards Suikoden. If you've already answered, please feel free to point me to a page I just want to possibly pick this up on the way home, and most game sites are blocked from work :P
Hey, I haven't been keeping up with this game at all, but I just glanced through a thread and noticed people mentioning a Save Anywhere feature. Does TLR have this? This is honestly a deciding factor into what console RPGs I pick up anymore.

@ Aoi: There's no one game it compares to but rather several:
- The dungeons/landscapes compare to FF12. Most are completely linear, sometimes they feel like tubes. So far, they are not that impressive (Not bad looking, but just not really "designed"). The desert is great and so are other places but sometimes you just think "Is this really from the people who also make Final Fantasy?". it all feels a bit "gamey" sometimes, not like a real place.
- The story so far compares also to FF12 in a few ways, then compares to something like Enchanted Arms, then again to something like FF Tactics 2. It's kinda there and when it is,it is good, but you could say the game is more open about itself and the story is a path you can take but not one you have to take at any given time. Sometimes there is some great exposition and sometimes it is a bit jumpy (Why are they suddenly in a kitchen? Wait, now they are in a mine again?) So it doesn't show some thing but makes you fill in the blanks. The dialogue and character reactions are good though. There was a scene with Emma in which you meet a boss and the camera zooms in on Emma's face and she does an expression that's a mix of bloodlust and joy. Kinda like "Yeah I waited for this, this is gooood".
This makes it all sound negative, but it is really quite good,it's just hard to describe.
@ Lunker: You can save anytime you can access the menu. Saving takes like 2 seconds max, it's like a quick save. And believe me,you will NEED to save a lot, cause this game can and will kick your ass, even if you just stay on the story path.
@ Adhesive: I have been playing for almost 18 hours I guess and I feel I just barely started the story. I have no idea where I am at though. For example,if I just followed the story, I would by now have 9 locations to visit. But by doing quests, talking to NPCs and wandering around, I have 16 places on my map. If I went through the Volcano I found I would come to a new city ect.. So it's really big and really open.
I'm pretty sure that if you do everything, you will easily take 70 hours for this. If you just power through the story (and manage the fights without some battles to raise your stats,ect..) I guess it takes 30? Maybe 25? Can't be sure, really.
I would ask everyone (it spoils the story but it's not even an hour into the game,so just watch it) to watch this video, which pretty much shows you how the game looks and plays: http://gamersyde.com/stream_9497_en.html
Curse apparently randomly KOs whoever is cursed, which can result in a Botched Union (if Leader is KOed, you can't give them orders anymore).
It was on a side-quest for Emma, the boss fight of which included two Blackwing dragon looking mobs. They AoE Curse unions.
It took me like 8 or more tries to finally win that fight, which I won basically randomly by having one of my unions resist the Curse.
The game is crazy fun so far though. I just need to figure out what the defense for Curse is though, as if I run into that again I'll go crazy .

Same. The more I read about it, the better it sounds. I'd rather play it now than wait for Christmas.
But now, with this:
and you guys talking about it, I have to buy myself a Christmas present 8-)
Texture pop-in was a minor annoyance in Mass Effect but didn't bother me, and if that was "pretty bad" then I think I'll manage.
PC version? That would be badass.
