All these good things I'm hearing is making me rethink waiting for the PC version, especially if the slowdown and texture popping (installed) is only as bad as ME was...
I dunno man, that's a lot of awkward pauses, long loading and stiff animation going on in that video. It especially sucks since it looks pretty and the battle system looks neat as well.
Hope a release date for PC or PS3 gets announced soon.
I like how one of their major points against the game is that you can save anywhere, and thus, it is your fault when you haven't saved in six hours and you walk through a door to get owned by a boss.
That just tickles me.
Jrpgs in particular tend to be games fans make allowances for while everyone else thinks they're crazy.

The cutscenes before/after that fight in the video are the only ones so far with such bad animation.
Believe me,when I suddenly saw that I was all "huh? what the hell is going on?" cause it wasn't like that before and it definitely is much much better afterwards. Some of the scenes till now have been really great (Like the Emma thing I mentioned).
And yeah,I'm pretty much used to reviewers slamming the games I have the most fun with. Lost Odyssey, Infinite Undiscovery, Blue Dragon, so many people go "oh god, they sucked" when I had enormous fun with them. Also other games than JRPGs like Spidey: web of shadows got trashed and I never had more fun with a Spidey game. On the other hand, games like Fable 2 get praised everywhere, even though the game looks shoddy, has problems to no end, but hey, let's throw some 10s at it.
I'll say it again:
TLR is a good game. If you like fighting and exploration and you don't want the story to always hold your hand,it is a great game.
To put it in an analogy everyone on the PA forums will understand:
If a hot girl gives you a blowjob and from time to time she does some motoric, stuttering movements, you really won't care, cause she is still giving you a blowjob.
After seeing the gameplay for a few hours, I would have to agree on most of the scores I've seen being handed out. There is a bevy of technical problems. However, this is one of those rare games that can still be extremely enjoyable despite its graphical and engine problems- as long as you have some patience for those things. Personally, I think it should be right around a 66% or so; I would also gladly pay 60$ for it, though!

That girl is TLR.
Fable 2: Stuttering framerate, boring story, boring combat. Shallow quests, miniature zones to explore that are mostly a very forward path with a pillar blocking a chest or key out of your view. Push up on D-Pad to win game. Game-breaking glitches that prevent you from continuing the story? 9/10
Last Remnant: Fuck yeah, this shit's off the hook, this game is so aw- whoa, whoa, framerate? JRPG? Unreal Engine.. not Gears? Peace this out, son. 6/10.
5.3! WTF? I really think these review sites have got no credibility at all these days. The review is absolute trash.
Why do you say it's absolute trash? Seemed like a solid review to me.
There are such serious framerate issues during combat that what you see on your television sometimes resembles a slideshow. It sullies the entire experience and can even get in the way of gameplay since The Last Remnant has a critical system that requires you to perform timed button presses. The trouble continues with loading, which is laborious given the number of times you go in and out of a fight or change rooms. Once it does get loaded, you'll find awkward texture pop-in which can hurt the visual fidelity of cutscenes and kill any power or emotions they might convey.
Framerate is not nearly that bad, and if it really was for him, then he should get his 360 checked. I'd say the lowest I've seen it go is around 20, maybe a bit less.
Pop-in really doesn't happen in cutscenes at all, I have no clue where that came from.
Even the aspects that the near-broken game engine doesn't hinder still fall short. The animations in The Last Remnant are downright bad (just get a load of the main character running). And since Square Enix opted for in-engine cutscenes, that means you get the same lame animations during every conversation and the lip syncing is oftentimes creepy looking.
Animations really aren't bad. The main character running only looks awkward due to the speed of it.
As for in-engine cutscenes always being the same? That's simply untrue. It's sounding like this guy hardly even played it by this point of the review.
During battles, the camera is sometimes placed too close to your characters, rendering them partially see-through or totally invisible.
I don't think this is even possible, as the camera is always at a set distance when characters are taking action.
Take the save system as a first example. You can save anywhere in a dungeon or town. It's nice not dealing with save points, an outdated RPG mechanic, but there are no checkpoints in The Last Remnant. That means that if you walk through a door and happen upon a tough fight, you had better hope you saved your game just prior.
What? When have RPGs had checkpoints? Unless you count a save point before a big boss room. Protip: make a save before you step into a huge door that says "Inner Chamber", or whatever. It takes about 10 seconds.
However, it does have serious limitations. The fact that you're not giving direct commands and only get a choice of a few general options can be amazingly frustrating. If you choose to heal, The Last Remnant might not pick the target that needs it the most.
Pushing X shows what actions will be taken by your union members. It also shows you who will be getting healed.
That's less me getting less than halfway through the review. I don't think this fellow even understood the game. Needless to say, the IGN review is most definitely not solid. GameTrailers was much, much better from what I recall. Go check that one out.
What a disappointment...not only is the main character sound like he is borderline retarded 90% of the time, but the voice acting in general is poorly done, the character animations (especially the main characters when running.) look unnatural and downright silly, they also repeat the same animations over and over again (especially in cutscenes.) which makes things look even weirder. Tthe textures pop and fade, and the framerates jitter and stutter all over the place. Why did they choose to do cutscenes in the in game engine anyways? Square has always been known for doing gorgeous pre-rendered scenes, this game may have been more tolerable if they hadn't done the cutscenes in their game engine, it just accentuates how poorly made this game really is on a technical standpoint.
Not to mention so far the story is going nowhere and is actually pretty cliche. Geez square what happened to you guys? Where did all your good games and talent go? Apparently to DS and PSP development, because your next gen games SUCK. Man i was SOOO hyped about this game too, god dammit square. And the combat in this game downright stinks, it isn't even fun at all.

To compare the framerate to another JRPG:
Infinite Undiscovery has a bad framerate in combat, sometimes falling into the one digits. This was also criticized by every review. The game is also in real time, meaning the frame rate actually keeps you from perfectly playing the game, using everything the game offers. For example, the parry system was almost impossible to use because of the framerate and the timing required. IU's story was also presented in pretty bad cutscenes and could have fit into a 2 hour movie.
This game got a higher score than IU and the technical problems were "mentioned" but never accused of keeping you from enjoying the game.
Now TLR is being bashed for the same problems, eventhough they don't keep you from playing the game to it's fullest. The reviewer saying the framerate keeps you from hitting the critical triggers? Bullshit. The slowdown even makes it EASIER. A LOT easier.

You are right it does make them easier. But it doesn't make the game better, the thing is still a buggy pile of trash and it makes me want to scream that square even put their name on it. Their quality control used to be MUCH MUCH better than this. I used to be able to buy a square game just because it had their name on it and i knew i'd like it right then, now they've gone to shit.
Well I can say this safely. My friend bought the game and came over last night. Hes going to let me hang onto it for a while since he has other games to play. (yes!) So I played it for a good 2-3 hours. Before playing it I had stayed up for over a fucking day and was dead tired. When he walked into the house I was laying in my bed falling asleep. I decided to play it and bam, 2-3 hours went by like that and I didnt even realize I was tired anymore. Honestly man, this game....it pisses me off what the reviewers are saying. It is NOT that bad. AT ALL!
So the pop-in. Its standard UE3 Pop-in. It isnt bad and in fact goes much faster than say...Gears does for pop-in. And honestly you wont notice it all that much with all the shit going on in battle.
Framerate. Where the FUCK did the reviewers have such bad framerate problems? Did they all get some review build of the game that wasnt complete like they did for Lost Odyssey? In that 2-3 hours (I have this installed on the Hard Drive) the framerate chugged maybe a few times. and only when I used giant fucking moves like Rushs Omnistrike. I think there may have been a couple moments where it did go ballistic but its so short a time and so little in quantity and in fact (for me) seems to go with the action a little cause when it slowls down it looks like your dudes making a badass swing of fury and it slowed down to show just how badass it was.
Ok for critical strikes. HOW COULD THE SLOWING DOWN OF THE FRAMERATE MAKE IT HARDER TO HIT THEM?! Its slowed down during critical strikes and I was HAPPY when it did. The slim chance you have to hit these is tough. You HAVE to be paying attention. When it slowed down it made it awesome and slow. So I was like..."oh! YES!" And hit it with ease. It actually made me happy. Seriously. The slowdown in the game REALLY isnt NEARLY as bad as the reviewers are saying, and that is pissing me off.
The animation like the running does look a bit stiff but ...from what Ive played so far honestly, the running is the only funny looking one, and even then you probably wont care, cause...well, its not that big a deal really.
In battle I would LOVE to know how he managed to fuck up the camera and get it behind his character. LOVE TO KNOW. That doesnt seem possible and hasnt happened to me once. The camera is so far off from your union in battles its fucking ridiculous that he somehow managed to do that. And I dont know if you can zoom it in or not. If you could I dont know why you would. Im going to bet that every once in a while (hasnt happened to me yet) the camera does its own thing and decideds to go inside your dude when he slices the enemy or something. And thats not really a game-breaking fuck-bug because...well...really? OH NOEZ! I missed seeing his attack in a pre-planned attack strategy! How will I ever win now! Fucking people and their bitching. (Like me right now!)
Sorry to rant like this but what Ive played so far has been SO GOOD that these reviews simply mean absolute SHIT. This game kicks some fucking ass and the shit these reviwers are bitching about it so small and so dumb to base a game off of its ridiculous. I cant say enough to go out and buy this game. It is fucking badass. Very fun, the story has been good so far, the voice-acting is solid, (the only funny voices come from like *random soldier number 3* type of guys, and even then it fits them, which youll see why if you play), and the framerate/pop-in...tch, its not nearly as bad as those motherfuckers let on. Seriously.
~ End bitchy rant.

As for the guy who asked why I thought the IGN review was trash, well...it was. All he mentioned was that he thought the frame rate was SO bad it was like a slidehow, which is complete bullshit. He hardly mentioned anything else about the game and simply over-exagerrated and made up things about the technical side of it. Sorry but most reviews these days are a load of rubbish, period.

It isn't a slideshow, but the framerate issues happen in every single battle, and at the beginning and end of every single cutscene, and randomly when walking around in the game world. It is the CONSTANT framerate stuttering that happens every fight every 5-6 seconds that bugs me, it really takes away from the game. Also the texture popping in this game is FAR more noticeable than in other games using the unreal engine. Not to mention within the first 20 mins of game play i encountered 14 loading screens, thats a little much, one at the beginning and end of every single area, cutscene, and battle, and they aren't short either for how prevalent they are.

Well I can't really comment on this because I personally have no frame rate drops at all while simply walking around a town etc. Maybe it is because I am using a Falcon 360?

Very true. I can see why reviewers will sit and bitch about the stuff happening here. I really can. They have to say what goes one when they play.
The game DOES have pop-in, the game DOES have framerate slowing...thats really all thats so bad about it. Other than that theres no reason to bitch. Its not game-breaking slowdown, its like 1-2 maybe 3 seconds of slow which doesnt really affect the fun youll be having. And even then its not too often, atleast for me, maybe Im lucky but it hasnt slowed down all that much.
Oh and Klyka! I see what you mean about enemies! Spoilered
I decided "Hey! Lets go and level up!" So I go through...Dillmoor I think its called? Well it was after Rush goes off on his own from the castle. I figured Id level up some and explore around. So I go into that place and find some dogs. I was like "tch..dogs! I kicked their asses before!" So I fight three linked. Well. "before" as I put it. I had tons of people and destroyed them. NOW though....Yeah...Rush and two other dudes....We got DESTROYED. So now I fight two dog links. But then! The funny part. Im walking around in there and Im like...is that..."A DRAGON!" So I save and run up to it. IT RAPED ME. Bad. Like, Two his party wiping bad. It was hilarious.

I can safely say that has not happened to me. I walk around town fine, no stutterting. The only time Ive EVER see the framerate do its thing is when Im in battle, and even then its RARE. Oh and the pop in isnt bad at all. I dont know how youre having such trouble with this game here...go play gears or unreal. There ya go. Thats how popin works. Or Mass Effect. Or halo 2.

I dont know what game you're playing but it isn't the same as mine thats for sure, the framerate issues pop up all the time in my game, constantly, and its fucking irritating, i can't even play the game, it drives me up the wall. If it happened once and a while i could get over it, but its in EVERY SINGLE battle, the frame rate cant seem to decide whether it wants to go 60fps or 5fps, it just stutters and jitters all over the place its super infuriating. I am thinking (hoping.) that when this game comes out on PC i can enjoy it for how it was probably meant to be played and not have any texture popping or constant frame rate jittering, because im sure deep down in this disgusting pile of bugs and technical flaws there is a game in there that i may enjoy.

What is it with pretty much all Japanese games being poorly optimized lately?
It's a hard and fast rule.
The highest quality turn based battle is not complete without a flashy cutaway, loading screen, entry pose, optional long and unskippable animation for each staple attack, an exit pose, optional statistic screen, cutaway and final loading screen.
Honestly I don't know why I still like them. I'm just a sucker for interactive story books, even if that story is mostly just a dude wandering around the world setting critters on fire or viciously hacking their heads off. Or both, as is often the case.

No because that only helps loading times, not technical problems. Also on a 20 gig hdd? Yeah right. And i am not coughing up $160 for a $40 120 gig hard drive.

One disc at a time. Im sure you could find the space. And you may say it only helps loading times but Ive never had the game drop in framerate while walking around. It loads up EVERY texture in an area in around 5 seconds. Then its done and I walk around. Never stutters. Works fine. Only time is in battle. So I dont know why youre having such problems but that could be it.

If you notice the framerate in this game dropping anywhere outside of combat, your 360 is probably going to die soon and you should have it checked for STD's immediately.
Seriously, it's ONLY the battles. And the framerate only falls because of the textures the game has to unload/load all the time. it's badly optimized, that's it.
Oh and yesterday for example I had battles, even bigger ones, where the framerate was suddenly silky smooth all the time. Like,no matter what I did. Then three battles later it was bad again, then the next battle it didn't hitch once. It's awkward really.
About HDD install: DO IT. Loading screens are never more than 4 seconds and texture pop-in takes less than a second if a second at all.

I only said it does it SOMETIMES while walking around. In battles it does it EVERY SINGLE TIME and on a constant basis, i can't stand it, this game should not be this badly made, there is no excuse for it, i simply expected better quality assurance from Square than this and it is infuriating. The framerates are only one problem i have with the game though, i really dont like a lot of things in it and i think it could have been done far better than it was, it really feels like this game is in alpha testing or something.

It's an entire race, and they're awesome, especially when you see them doing heroic attacks during battles.

Very well received over there, extremely disliked here due to a few technical issues and a dork running animation.
So bizarre.
I think they slammed Lost Odyssey though.

Who slammed Lost Odyssey? Reviewers?
The game has a 66% average on GameRankings. 5.3 isn't that far off.
That just tickles me.
Jrpgs in particular tend to be games fans make allowances for while everyone else thinks they're crazy.
That girl is TLR.
Gaming and Non-Gaming 2009 Resolutions
Fable 2: Stuttering framerate, boring story, boring combat. Shallow quests, miniature zones to explore that are mostly a very forward path with a pillar blocking a chest or key out of your view. Push up on D-Pad to win game. Game-breaking glitches that prevent you from continuing the story? 9/10
Last Remnant: Fuck yeah, this shit's off the hook, this game is so aw- whoa, whoa, framerate? JRPG? Unreal Engine.. not Gears? Peace this out, son. 6/10.
Why do you say it's absolute trash? Seemed like a solid review to me.
Pop-in really doesn't happen in cutscenes at all, I have no clue where that came from.
Animations really aren't bad. The main character running only looks awkward due to the speed of it.
As for in-engine cutscenes always being the same? That's simply untrue. It's sounding like this guy hardly even played it by this point of the review.
I don't think this is even possible, as the camera is always at a set distance when characters are taking action.
What? When have RPGs had checkpoints? Unless you count a save point before a big boss room. Protip: make a save before you step into a huge door that says "Inner Chamber", or whatever. It takes about 10 seconds.
I think you hit the nail on the head there.
Spoilered
Is it downloaded to your Hard Drive? Because theyvle already said (Square themselves) that this game is basically meant to be played off the hard drive. Due to...well. The framerate/pop-in stuffs.
